Episode 2: Learner’s Characteristics at Different Stages
Learner’s characteristics vary depending on their stages of development. As a learner move
from one stage of development to the other, there will be a sudden change of his characteristics. This
lesson will help you understand how each learner’s characteristic changes as he or she moves from
one stage of development to another.

Objectives:

1. Identify the stage of the physical, motor, linguistic, literacy, cognitive, social, and
emotional development of the learner as manifested in the actual classroom setting.
2. Observe and reflect on the different approaches employed by the teacher in dealing with
learners in the different stages of development.
3. Analyze how the teaching and learning process should be conducted considering the
different phases of learner’s development.

Education Theory
Learners’ characteristics continuously change as time pass and once there is a new learning
acquired by him or her. This manifests a significant change due to his/her increase in the
developmental stage. This process is normal since they are developing and constructing new
knowledge.

In terms of teaching, a teacher should discuss topics that are relevant and appropriate to their
cognitive level. Learners must not be forced to perform tasks that are beyond their current cognitive
capabilities.

Observation Guide
Read the following statements carefully, then write your observation report on the space
provided.

Physical:
1. Observe their gross motor skills. How they can carry themselves. How they move, walk, run,
go upstairs, etc.
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.

Social:
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their concerns?

Emotional:
1. Describe emotional disposition or temperament of the learners (happy, sad, easily cries, mood
shift)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behaviour. Are they self – conscious?

Cognitive:

abilities.

Direction: Write your reflection of what you have learned in this lesson by completing the
statements below. Compile your answer in a portfolio.

1. I realized that teaching and learning process should be conducted considering the different phases
of learner’s development. Learners must not be forced to perform tasks that are beyond their current
cognitive capabilities.
2. I believe that a child's learning ability is influenced by their connections with peers and adults,
and their sense of physical and interpersonal security creates an educational environment.
3. I feel that students learning is important for lifelong progress, adults and especially to the
teachers are responsible for their care and education which play a significant role in their health,
development, and learning.
4. When I become a teacher, I will set myself as good example to the students an also leave a good
inspiration them that encourage them to realize their dreams in the future.
5. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences when you were their
age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners you observed?
While I was observing those students, I recall also my own experiences when I was their age. like
them, I’m also naughty that time. I love to play all the time and I’m fond of roaming around our
classroom. My experience that time was enjoyable like the learners do right now. But as I entered in
high school, I learned to be independent on handing my own problems. Yet I want to say that my
childhood memories are very happy and full of excitement that still very fresh in my mind. And I love
to go back those happy memories that I never expect that my childhood days are reflecting on what I
observed to those students.
6. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for the positive or negative reasons. How did she/he help or
not help you with your needs how did it affect you?
One of my favourite professors from the past is Mrs. Dolly Ralustian. Although she can be a little
strict when giving lessons, her strictness actually made us want to master everything she was
teaching. She not only instructs us in the classroom but also serves as a fantastic motivator and
source of motivation for us to achieve more. It has an impact on me in that all of the choices I made
to get to where I am now were influenced by her inspiration and counsel. I am very glad that the two
years of my senior high school days are not wasted but a path for me to become a good learner with
the teaching of my teacher.
