Introduction
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in
the Gulf of Mexico, causing the largest marine oil spill in
history.

The spill released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into

the Gulf.

The disaster resulted from several operational failures.

Main operational controls that were lacking:

Well Integrity BOP System Failures Emergency Response Plan
Inadequacies

1) Underestimation of Spill
1) Inadequate Casing 1) BOP Activation Delay
Potential

2) Faulty Cementation 2) BOP Equipment Malfunction

2) Ineffective Communication

Lessons from the Deep
1) Well Design
Use a riser made of a stronger material, such as high-
strength steel.

2) Well Control Practices

Use a BOP that is properly sized and maintained.
Monitor well pressures closely and take corrective action
when necessary.

3) Oversight
Require oil companies to use stronger risers in deepwater
drilling.
Hold oil companies accountable for their actions.

Towards Safer Offshore
Drilling
Utilize stronger risers made of high-strength
materials.

Ensure casing and cementing integrity.

Employ a properly sized, maintained, and tested BOP

system.

Implement continuous wellbore monitoring.

Provide comprehensive well control training to rig

personnel.
From Tragedy...
To Transformation
New well design standards.

A greater emphasis on safety.

Injury rate has declined by more than 50%.

New well control procedure that requires the

BOP to be tested more frequently has been
implemented.

BP has increased its investment in safety

research and technology by $1 billion per
year.
