MODULE 8

STIMULANT Uppers are stimulants that initially increase energy and alertness. These are the world's most widely used
psychoactive drugs. Some give an intense rush while others are only mildly stimulating. These drugs vary in strength
from more potent to less potent. Stimulants on the other hand can cause severe health problems when they are abused.
It is the rapid development of tolerance and the disrupting effect on brain chemistry that encourage abuse and
addiction.
-Stimulants are chemical substances that induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or
both. When taken, stimulants tend to arouse the central nervous system, decrease hunger, and make the user awake or
alert. Their immediate effects include but are not limited to elevated blood pressure, increase in heartbeat and body
temperature, and dilation of the eyes. Basically, stimulants produce effects opposite to that of depressants that bring a
decrease in mental and physical function. Instead of bringing about relaxation and sleep, they provide a feeling of well-
being.
HEROIN – a highly addictive opiate, users quickly develop a tolerance to the drug and need more and more of it to get
the same effects
HERBAL ECSTASY/EPHEDRINE – the active ingredients are caffeine and ephedrine
DESIGNER DRUGS – changing the molecular structure of an existing drug or drugs to create a new substance
CRACK – a cheaper from of cocaine that may be more addicting
(Types of stimulant drugs:)
AMPHETAMINES - Was initially marketed as "Benzedrine", as an over-the-counter inhaler to treat nasal congestion and
asthma.
COCAINE - A very strong central nervous system stimulant it is the most potent of all the stimulants. It is not
synthetically made, but rather it is extracted from the "coca plant", also known as "Erythroxylon coca" that is
extensively cultivated for cocaine production.
-a powerfully addictive drug, heavy use may produce paranoia, hallucinations, agression
CAFFEINE - Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant of the "methylxanthine class", a group of naturally occurring
agents present in coffee, tea, colas, energy drinks, and chocolates.
SHABU/ "POOR MAN'S COCAINE"/ METHAMPHETAMINE - Discovered in Japan in 1919 it is chemically known as
"methamphetamine hydrochloride", and locally called "shabu". it is a central nervous system stimulant and sometimes
called "upper" or "speed"
NICOTINE - A primary ingredient of tobacco products. This stimulant effect is a contributing factor to the addictive
properties of tobacco smoking.
AMPHETAMINE - This drug can lead to the development of psychosis with similar symptoms to schizophrenia.
METHAMPHETAMINE - This drug causes a person to feel a tactile hallucination or formication.
-some users avoid sleep for 3-15 days
ECSTASY - Among users, this is considered the most common type of designer drug.
-popular at all-night underground parties (called raves)
RITALIN - West coast is a street name of what type of illicit drugs?

MODULE 9
DEPRESSANTS Downers (depressants) depress the overall functioning of the central nervous system to induce sedation,
muscle relaxation, drowsiness, and if used to excess - coma. Some downers also induce a rush or high and often cause
disinhibition of impulses and emotions
ALKALOID – group of nitrogen-containing compounds that are physiologically active as poisons or drugs
The word “OPIUM” is actually derived from a Greek word meaning “SAP”
CODEINE is an opiate analgesic, meaning it is a pain reliever derived from the opium poppy plant
CODEINE – derived from morphine
SEDATIVE-HYPNOTIC DRUGS – similar to those of alcohol, this class of drugs was developed in the 1950’s as an
alternative to barbiturates
GHB (GAMMA HYDROXYBUTYRATE) – a strong, rapidly acting CNS depressant that was used as a sleep inducer in the
1960s and 1970s
METHAQUALONE – was developed in India in 1995 as a safe barbiturate substitute
(What are the types of Depressant drugs)
NARCOTICS - The word "narcotic" comes from the Greek word "narkos", meaning to sleep or to make numb. Thus,
narcotic drugs are chemical substances that induce sleep or stupor when introduced to the body.
OPIUM - derived from a poppy plant - Papaver somniferum popularly known as "gum", "gamot", "kalamay" or
"panocha". For medicinal purposes, opium is used specifically to relieve pain.
MORPHINE - most commonly used and best-used opiate. Effective as a painkiller six times more potent than opium, with
a high dependence-producing potential.
HEROIN - is three to five times more powerful than morphine from which it is derived and the most addicting opium
derivative and a powerful or strong painkiller.
MORPHINE - Codeine is extracted/derived from Morphine,
BARBITAL - it is considered the first barbiturate drug
BARBITURIC ACID - the main chemical component of Barbiturate
BARBITURATES – compound derived from Barbituric acid
KODELA - The Greek word for poppy head
OPIUM POPPY - The plants where Codeine is extracted
MODULE 10
HALLUCINOGENIC DRUGS also known as Psychedelics dramatically alter a user's sensory perceptions and create a world
in which reason takes a back seat to intensified sensations by creating illusions, delusions, and hallucinations. The initial
objective of use was to alter one's consciousness and perception of reality rather than to induce an immediate rush.
PSYCHEDELICS consists of a variety of mind-altering drugs, which distort reality, thinking, and perceptions of time,
sound, space, and sensation.
HALLUCINOGENS are sometimes known as "all arounders", or "mind expanders" because of their effect that brings false
perception and illusion. When taken, hallucinogens worsen muscular coordination and senses are dulled, speech
becomes incoherent and blocked. Studies reveal that chronic users may experience persistent memory problems and
speech difficulties, mood disorders, anxiety, violent behavior, and depression. A large dose of hallucinogens may
produce convulsion, lung failure, and ruptured blood vessels in the brain, heart failure, and coma.
CANNABIS – the botanical genus of a number species.
HEMP – is used to describe Cannabis plants that are high in fiber content
MARIJUANA - is used to describe cannabis plants that are high in psychoactive resins
BHANG – from the stem and the leaves, has the lowest potency
GANJA – from the stronger leaves and the flowering tops
CHARAS – the concentrated resin from the plant and is the most potent. This sticky resin is pressed into cakes and called
“hashish”
HASH OIL - can be extracted from the plant (using solvent) and added to foods
PEYOTE (MESCALINE) – the active component of the peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) and the San Pedro cactus
(Trichocereus Pachanoi)
PCP (PHENCYCLIDINE HYDROCHLORIDE) – used as a dissociative general anesthetic for humans
KETAMINE – a dissociative general anesthetic used in human and veterinary medical procedures
(What are the different types of Psychedelics)
MARIJUANA - It is the most commonly abused hallucinogen in the Philippines. Marijuana is a mixture of leaves, stems,
and flowering tops also known scientifically as Cannabis Sativa Lima, smoked or eaten for its pleasure-giving effects.
LYSERGIC ACID DIETHYLAMIDE (LSD) - Extremely potent hallucinogen. It is synthetically made from lysergic acid, which
is found in ergot, a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. Studies show that LSD is 1,00 times more powerful than
marijuana.
MESCALINE - It is the alkaloid hallucinogen extracted from the peyote cactus and can also be synthesized in the
laboratory.
PSILOCYBIN - Also known as psychedelic mushrooms, the psilocybin mushrooms contain psychedelic or hallucinogenic
compounds such as psilocybin and psilocin.
DIETHYLAMIDE - This is known as the synthetic compound of LSD
LSD (LYSERGIC ACID DIETHYLAMIDE) - This drug is also known as a truth serum, more accurately called a semi-synthetic
hallucinogen because it has both natural and synthetic components
SINSEMILLA - A Spanish word that means without seed, this technique involves separating female plants from male
plants before pollination
IBOGANAINE - This drug can cause a catatonic reaction to a person that can even last for two days
DMT (DIMETHYLTRYPTAMINE) - This drug is also known as the Businessman’s trip, a psychedelic substance similar in
structure to psilicon

MODULE 11

(Tolerance and withdrawal in alcohol)
TOLERANCE - is a process through which the brain defends itself against the effect of alcohol.
DISPOSITIONAL (METABOLIC) TOLERANCE - occurs when the body changes so that it metabolizes alcohol more
efficiently. The liver eventually becomes less able to metabolize the alcohol, a process called reverse tolerance.

INTERNET ADDICTION is the inability of the person to stop, control or refrain from excessive use of the internet for
purposes of video gaming, online shopping, use of Facebook, and others that usually interfere with your daily activities,
relationships, work, or job. Internet addiction is also referred to as Compulsive Internet Use (CIU), Problematic Internet
Use (PIU), or i-Disorder
INTERNET ADDICTION is considered as the most addicting precisely because of the era of the digital age, meaning we
are now surrounded by technology.
INTERNET GAMING ADDICTION - To be classified as Internet Gaming Addiction, generally the gaming must result in
significant impairment or distress and no other associated conditions are present such as problems in online gambling,
use of social media or general use of the internet.
CYBER RELATIONSHIP ADDICTION If connections made on the Internet are not created for sexual activity but becomes
compulsive, they could be called "cyber-relationships." Problems occur when an online relationship draws the
participants away from their real-life relationships. Online friendships can lead to "cyber affairs," often to the
devastation of the neglected partner
INFORMATION ADDICTION The ability to access thousands of Web sites that cover virtually every subject is attractive to
a wide variety of Internet users. Young people may find that online activity is less threatening than actual human
interaction and could be at risk for isolation.
TELEVISION ADDICTION The benchmarks of addiction include compulsive use, using TV to change one's mood, craving,
loss of control, continued use despite adverse consequences, and development of tolerance. The distorted view of real-
life presented on many TV shows makes it harder for a compulsive viewer to make good decisions. The portrayal and
promotion of dysfunctional families and relationships as the norm, rather than the exception, is confusing to adolescents
and young adults.
INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER This involved the disruption of daily activities due to the excessive use of the internet
INTERNET GAMING ADDICTION This resulted in significant impairment and stress other than the use of the internet,
online gambling, social media, and others
CYBER RELATIONSHIP ADDICTION An electronic addiction wherein the person withdraws from real-life relations
TELEVISION ADDICTION This type of electronic addiction that distorted the family relationship, decision-making, altering
moods and portrayals are imitated by individuals
INFORMATION ADDICTION This addiction resulted in individual’s access to hundreds of websites that attracted
individuals to be dependent on the internet
INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER (IAD) is characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or
behaviors regarding computer use and Internet access that lead to impairment or distress. Internet addiction is when a
person has a compulsive need to spend a great deal of time on the Internet, to the point where other areas of life (such
as relationships, work, or health) are allowed to suffer. The person becomes dependent on using the Internet and needs
to spend more and more time online to achieve the same 'high'.
INTERNET ADDICTION is a behavioral addiction in which a person becomes dependent on the use of the Internet, or
other online devices, as a maladaptive way of coping with life's stresses.
