Reflection Essay

I see an improvement in my writing in most areas throughout this semester. I have


learned how to write according to the different occasions given such as email, memo,
instructions, etc. I also can say I feel a lot more comfortable putting together a formal paper.
Before this class, papers use to scare me as I was not aware of all the elements they should
include. This class gave me a lot of information on how to correctly structure and write papers,
emails, and more. This is all important information that I can take and use in other classes as well
as my career choice as a nurse. There are some areas that I feel like I still need improvement on
such as formal citations and layout. Although these things are very simple, they make a huge
impact on your writing, and I believe I could be more knowledgeable in these areas.
My goal in this course was to be more comfortable writing. Before coming to this class,
writing use to scare me as there are many components to watch out for. I believe I wasn’t taught
step by step the different components starting from the different headers to the layout of the
page. This class broke everything down in detail and allowed us to practice on each element step
by step. A lot of professors expect you to know all of the elements of writing, so they don’t waste
their time trying to go back over it, so this class was very helpful. It gave me a refresher on some
topics I was already strong on as well as teaching me more information on topics I struggled on.
My goal of trying to get more comfortable with writing was achieved throughout the span of this
course. I feel like writing is much easier and I tackle it so much better with less fear allowing me
to perform better. It is much easier doing something you have more knowledge on then doing
that same task with less knowledge. I feel like writing is fun know, I get to express my thoughts
through the use of words. This is a class that I feel like is very useful for the future. Writing is an
important school to have for all life aspects. For example, my career choice is a labor and
delivery nurse. Although many people may think that writing is not needed, it is also a big
component of the job. I will have to send email to other hospitals regarding my patients, I will
have to formally type up the daily treatment the patient is receiving, and more. This class has
taught me a lot of skills I can take further in life with me.
I would say I’m most proud of my white paper because of the many different steps that
took place to properly put it together. It was fun being able to find a problem based off something
that I chose. My Reaktion book was “The Sea” so the problem I focused on during my white
paper was the problem of ghost nets within our seas. It was fun being able to formally design a
white paper on something I was interested in. Throughout this process I had many questions
about things such as the design, the citation, and more and all my questions were easily answered
in our class workshops. That assignment showed me that writing should not be something you
fear but rather something you enjoy. If I could add any assignment to this course, it would
probably be building an app or how to formally make an easy app that people can use. Allowing
the student to pick what they want their app to focus on based off a problem within the world.
For example, a food tracker to track number of calories to limit obesity throughout the world.
This could be a very fun assignment. If I could edit any assignment, it would be the Engagement
Project, this assignment was very hard due to many technical issues I came across. I would
change this assignment to more of a class a group assignment with more writing and design
factors.
