 HYPERPIGMENTATION

What is it?
A common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin
are darker than the surrounding skin.
May appear as freckles, age spots, or larger areas of darkened
skin.
Post-inflammatory
Melasma hyperpigmentation (PIH)

How it occurs?
It occurs when special cells in the skin make excess of
the pigment called melanin.
May be caused by injury or inflammation of the skin,
sun damage, abnormal skin growths, hormone changes,
pregnancy, or other medical conditions.
Certain medicines can cause hyperpigmentation such
as antimalarials, psychotropic, amiodarone &
tetracyclines

What to use?
Hydroquinones Kojic acid
- Inhibit tyrosinase activity - Inhibit catecholase activity of tyrosinase Non-ablative
- Promote melanocyte destruction Tranexamic acid fractioning laser
TOPICAL/SYSTEMIC

LASER THERAPY

- Promote degradation of melanosomes

- Inhibits UV-induced plasmin activity & Low-fluence Q-
Retinoid impairs melanogenesis switched laser
- Increase epidermal cell turnover Chemical peels Picosecond laser
- Express anti-inflammatory properties - Controlled destruction of skin layers
Azelaic acid depending on peel depth
*Major drawback includes
- Inhibit tyrosinase activity - Increase keratinocyte turnover
high risk of PIH post
- Selective antiproliferative & cytotoxic Cosmeceuticals e.g. arbutin, treatment & recurrence in
effects on melanocytes darker skin tones
ascorbic acid & niacinamide

What to avoid?
SUN EXPOSURE
Use physical sunscreens such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide on a
daily basis.
Chemical sunscreens, though very effective, can rarely cause an
allergic contact or irritant contact dermatitis , which itself may cause
PIH, thus further exacerbating the overall skin darkening.
Use physical barriers, such as hats and clothing that will reduce
exposure to the sun.

1. Puasa dan Ubat Booklet
A booklet to provide basic information on drug
consumption during Ramadan.
The booklet was prepared by DIS Pharmacy unit
and was used by the whole PKD Mersing staffs to
spread the information to patients.
Not only that, it was shared on the Mersing LED
billboard and QR code to the e-booklet also was
created!
 2. E-Pharmacist

A compilation of QR codes directing to basic

information for staffs such as drug album, drug
formulary, drug catalogue, puasa dan ubat
booklet, multidose drug stability anemia guideline
and more to come!
