short. The nights are long. It is a time of endings. It is the time when the monsters who live in the darkest of places venture out and hunt. The worst of them is a creature which has no True Name. Some call it The Nothing, others say The Empty. The Where are the heroes? people of the distant north call it A fishing village on the edge of Voidheart. 1 civilisation The Nothing reaches into the world only once per year. At midnight. At the A coaching inn filled with 2 strangers moment between the death of a year and the birth of the next, it hunts. 3 A monastery in the mountains The Empty takes the unawares. The vulnerable. The ones who are not 4 A mining outpost protected. 5 An island prison Its victims disappear. There one A nobleman’s manor near the moment. Gone the next. Nothing left 6 Great Forest behind but their screams. Oh the screams. What ritual protects from The Nothing? For a year the screams are heard. 1 Singing of hymns Ceaseless. Emanating from the spot where the prey was taken. 2 Giving of gifts All nearby can hear their pain and 3 Sharing of food their fear. Families move away, driven to flee the screaming remnants of their 4 Love of family loved ones. 5 Playing of games The next year ends and the screaming stops. They are never heard from again. 6 Praying to deities This is why the people perform the What object does the ritual require? rituals.
