0.1 RATIONAL
The pressure of Technological development in all sectors on the
Renewable energy sources has led to the growingthe cost of energy
around the world. Efficient and judicious use of the available energy
sources would lead to the easing of such pressures and drastic decrease
in the operating costs of the organizations and industries. Thus it is
necessary to save and conserve energy to the maximum possible extent.
Also essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills about the
concept of energy conservation is to be provided through different
approaches, project management and economics accepts. The process of
energy audit will help to identify the various possible avenues in which
savings of energy can be effectively adopted. This course makes .the
diploma holder well acquainted in the techniques of energy conservation
in the fiélds of engineering. It also introduces him to the energy audit
procedures.
COMPETENCY
1 The aim of this course is to help the student to attain the following industry
identified competency through various teaching, learning experiences:
2 Undertake energy conservation and energy audit.
Benefits :-
• Reduced Energy Costs
• Environmental Benefits
• Energy Security
• Job Creation
1
0.3 COURSE OUTCOME :-
The theory, practical experiences and relevant soft skills associated with this
course are to be taught and implemented, so that the student demonstrates the
following industry oriented COs associated with the above mentioned
competency:
a. Interpret energy conservation policies in India.
b. Implement energy conservation techniques in electrical machines.
c. Apply energy conservation techniques in electrical installations.

0.4 LITERATURE REVIEW
INTRODUCTION :-
The government of Maharashtra, one of the most populous and industrialized states
in India, recognizes the importance of energy conservation and sustainable energy
practices. Here's how the government may approach its energy conservation plan:
3. Energy Audits and Standards: Maharashtra may require energy audits for
industries and large commercial establishments to identify energy-saving
opportunities. The government may also enforce energy efficiency standards for
appliances and equipment.
4. Building Codes and Regulations: The state government may establish and enforce
building codes and regulations that promote energy-efficient construction and
renovation practices. This helps reduce energy consumption in the building sector.
3
5. Transportation Initiatives: Encouraging public transportation, electric vehicles,
and improving the efficiency of the transportation sector can be a significant
component of the plan to reduce energy consumption and emissions.
4
Energy conservation offers a wide range of benefits, encompassing
economic, environmental, and societal advantages. Here are some of the
key benefits of energy conservation:
5
installation, and research and development of energy-efficient
technologies.
6
• Uses of energy conservation :
7
more efficiently, we reduce the need for additional resource extraction,
preserving these resources for future generations.
11. Energy Access: In some cases, energy conservation can help extend
access to energy in underserved or remote areas. By using energy more
efficiently, existing energy sources can serve a larger population.
8
1. Energy-Efficient Lighting:
- Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED or CFL bulbs.
- Use motion sensors, timers, and dimmers to control lighting.
- Ensure that natural daylight is maximized through efficient window design and
placement.
3. HVAC Efficiency:
- Regularly service and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
(HVAC) systems.
- Upgrade to energy-efficient HVAC systems with programmable thermostats.
- Use ceiling fans to circulate air, allowing for more efficient temperature control.
9
4. Appliance Efficiency:
- Choose ENERGY STAR-rated appliances when purchasing new ones.
- Unplug or turn off appliances and chargers when not in use.
- Set refrigerators and freezers to the right temperature and keep coils clean.
8. Water Conservation:
- Fix leaky faucets and pipes to prevent water heating inefficiencies.
- Install low-flow showerheads and toilets to reduce hot water use.
9. Smart Thermostats:
10
- Use programmable or smart thermostats to optimize heating and cooling
schedules.
- Adjust thermostat settings when no one is at home or during sleeping hours.
12. Transportation:
- Use public transportation, carpooling, or biking instead of driving solo.
- Choose fuel-efficient vehicles or electric vehicles when purchasing a car.
- Maintain vehicles properly to optimize fuel efficiency.
