SAINT MATTHEW; ARCHBISHOP OF ATHENS

THE CONFESSOR & WONDER- WORKER (1861- + 1950)
HOLY LIFE OF ST MATTHEW THE CONFESSOR

St Matthew was born in 1861, in Crete and baptized as

George. He was the tenth child of the family of devout
priest Charalambos. At age 12 years, he entered in the
holy Virgin Mary Monastery of Chrysopigi, where he was a
reader. Four years later, he was departing from the
Monastery, at the behest of the Elder and he went to
Alexandria, to complete his gymnasium’s studies, which
closed in the year 1880. After he was completing program
of study, he moved to Jerusalem where he met Patriarch
Ierotheos. He introduced him in the Faculty of Theology of
the Holy Cross.
He graduated in 1885 and he was ordinate deacon. As he
was votary of ascetic life he wanted to leave and go to
Mount Athos, although the Patriarch Nicodemus achieved
him through the senior ranks of the clergy of the
Patriarchate. In the Skete of Saint Anna, he was
subordinated to the too ascetic and tight Elder Nektarios,
who ordained saint father as Great-Scheme Monk and he
named him Matthew. After seven years of subjugation
and obedience, Deacon Matthew was ordained priest.
After his ordination as Hieromonk, he became one of the
most eminent spiritual fathers of the Holy Mountain
Athos. At such point raised him the total self-denial and
the passionate faith, to seek and ask God to help in his
wish to take the martyr's death by love of Christ. He had
close spiritual contact with St. Nektarius, who gave the
Holy Father the officious of the spiritual father.
In 1924, it was made the illegal and ant-orthodox
introduction of the New Papal Calendar. Hieromonk
Mathew was fighting first for the restoration of the
innovative church in the pre-1924 situation. However,
when he saw how that the papacy and the hidden (until
then) Ecumenism had been entered in the innovative
“bishops” of the New Calendar, he has to preserve and
organize the non-innovative Church of G.O.C. At the same
time he ceased to write letters to the spiritual children of
Athens and inform the believers on the New Calendar’s
innovation. Also, in Mount Athos, raises with other
Fathers zealot monks of Athos, spiritual alarm, so he was
hated by the leaders of the community of Mount Athos
and they prohibited him even to leave his Cell.
In October 1926, he went- first of all Athos’ fathers- to
Athens and he started to organize the “small flock” of
G.O.C. He was succeeded by fiery preaching and teaching
of various letters and circulars, to increase the sulfur
content of self-denial and zeal of the children and both
they were advanced in virtue and the life in Christ, so
unconditionally we can say that the believers (G.O.C) of
that age was comparable in merit, as the believers of the
first Christian centuries. It was also great his huge
contribution to the flourishing of monasticism, by the
establishment of two large and resplendent monasteries
of the Virgin Mary (1927) and the Transfiguration of Christ
(1934), which were the bulwarks of Orthodoxy. In 1935,
by common desire of clergy and people, he was
concentrated as Bishop of Vresthena, by then Archbishop
of Dimitrias German and two other metropolitans who
returned to Orthodoxy from the New Calendar schism.
After the fall of the Bishops of G.O.C. in the misbelief of
Kavouridis with his heretical belief that the new calendar
is “under energy and not in act” a schism, for the
anathematized five times Frankish New Calendar! Saint
Father tried to restore them to the Orthodox way but they
were vain in their misbelief. On 1 September 1948, guided
by the Holy Spirit, he made the first consecration, as was
the only Orthodox Bishop in Greece, and after that he
ordained three others Bishops. Thus he continued the
transmission of the Apostolic Succession. On 1 September
1949, he was despite by the five bishops who declared the
Holy Synod, as Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece of
the Genuine Orthodox Christians. After total 15 years as
Hierarch, he reposed on 14 May 1950.
Many miracles were done by Holy Father Matthew. Both
during his funeral, and during the deposition of the
deceased in the Church of Saint Marina and then despite
the grave, ran plenty essence of myrrh from the venerable
body closely, that surprised all people, who received this
miracle as a blessing. The aroma was unsaid as the wishful
clergy and lay are assuring.

ST CATHERINE OF
MANDRAS The Policemen
start hitting with batons and
shooting for intimidation.
Some Chri-stians are injured
like the late Angeliki
Katsarelli from bullets who
escaped the danger and
Hariklia Louli who was
injured by the henchmen of
the gendarmes, imprisoned
and after about a month, she
died in prison. The fury of
the persecutors does not
stop there, but one of them raises his weapon with the intention of
inflicting a fatal wound with the stock of his weapon on the Priest! With
self-sacrifice, the young zealot rushes to protect the Priest with her own
body! The butt of the weapon found her in the back of the head and
inflicted a serious injury that a few days later - as the treating doctors
had predicted - would result in physical death. "Holy Mother!" were the
last words of this young Martyr. With the invocation of the Mother of
God's name, she loses consciousness and is transported covered in blood
for first aid. It was the first day of the Christmas Fast (15/11/1927) and it
was 4:00 am when the New Martyr Catherine reposed.

CARALAMBIS FOR
CHRIST FOOL He was
born in Arcadia (Dura-
zzo) in 1896, and after the
death of his father
Charalambis, took his
name: Charalambis. His
mother remarried in
Messinian village Chri-
stofillaiika, leaving rela-
tives in his family home. He was followed a few classes in elementary
school, discussed growing up in rural work. "Evaded his mandatory
military" Charalambos Papadogianis in 1916, of unknown residence in
1920, "was found nowhere 'in 1948. He reposed on October 10, 1974.
But something must be shocked at the intermediate his youth, details are
not known, there are no verified reports. Whatever he is said, it is not
clear and uncertain. It is best to leave those to speak, who had met him
to understand! In the streets he was shouting and he was saying:
"Tomorrow is open the sky, tomorrow is the feast of Theophany. You
false- feast." Once he went to the fair of the country. Once people saw
him, they began shouting:-Charalambos! said them strengths. -
Tomorrow is the (feast of) Holy Cross. People understand that tomorrow
is the Cross by the old calendar. But they called him as fool.

NUN NEKTARIA & MONK NEKTARIOS

On June 27, 1958, at around 6:30 p.m., just
outside the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in
Larnaca, a group of angry Turks attacked the
Venerable Monk Nektarios and threw him to
the ground from behind, one after the other,
where he received another six shots while with
knives they made 16 consecutive melee attacks
on him. The consequence of all this was, as it
follows, his immediate death. At the same time, a
little further from Fr. Nektarios, she is also found
dead, the one who was shot, the Abess Agathoniki who was on her way
to the Holy Monastery for service. It seems likely that the now Blessed
Martyr and National Martyr Agathoniki would have come to the aid of
Fr Nektarios, who was exhaling and groaning in pain, when he was shot.
No one else was near them to come to their aid. When later the brothers
of our Holy Monastery became aware of the tragic events, they found
them in a pool of blood, unjustly killed, and immediately notified the
police station of the nearest village, while emotional scenes took place
among especially the nuns motherhood, seeing dead the woman who,
until a few minutes ago, was vibrant with life and energy their abbess.

ST SPYRIDON THE NEW OF TRIMYTHOUS
In another case, as pious people say, they went to a
house for a religious service. The perimeter of the
house was high and the outside door was locked.
However, without being notified to open for him
the people of the house where he was waiting, I
saw him inside the courtyard and asked; "Where
did you come in, Your Eminence?" They noticed
that the outside door was locked. Doors and locks
did not stop him! In that same case this miracle
also happened. A woman, wife of Donta, while her
husband was Orthodox, she doubted about the Old
Calendar. She went to the house where Spyridon
Trimythoustos was staying and she said "I will
take his water left in the glass after Saint of
Trimythous and drank part of it and with it. I will
make the dough without leaven, and if it ascended,
I will also follow the old calendar. She took it, made the dough from the
water that Saint of Trimithous drank and remained, without leaven
(yeast) and went up and overflowed the container... From then on, she
became a warm Orthodox Christian.

RIGHTEOYS GENNADIOS OF CRETE

The confession of the Blessed Elder on the
issue of the authenticity of the Orthodox
Faith, the Blessed Elder was very strict. He
deeply respected and accepted the
traditional Calendar which he received after
his repentance at the Monastery of
Koudouma. The introduction of the papal
innovation of the new calendar into the
Patriarchate of Constantinople and the local
Church of Crete (the first move in the
imposition of the heresy of Ecoumenism)
took place in 1924. The change found him
serving in the humble Chapel of St. Anna,
where he had been staying since 1918. The Elder was especially
saddened by the schism of the two Churches. “We are divided by
the enemy,” he used to say. Woe to the innovators. They left the
truth and followed the darkness.” God’s Blessed one Gennadios
came to the end of his earthly life in March 1983.

FR LEONTIOS FOR CHRIST FOOL OF SAMOS

Fr. Leontios did not pick up
the painful cross of sin
through Christ arbitrarily, but
with the blessing of Bishop
Matthew. Already in 1949
Bishop Matthew had also
asked another lovely soul,
Tarasia, = for Christ foll,
Tarso (+ 1989), to imitate the
hall. He was priest of
Dormition of Theotokos
church on isle of Samos. His
ministry there ended in
1973From then on, he lived
"a penniless life", traversing
the entire island on foot and
barefoot, preaching the word of God in streets and squares and
finding refuge in chapels and deserts, making do with a piece of
dry bread! He reposed in Lord in 1993.

ST IGNATIOS THE NEN PANTELEIMON

He entered in the Genuine Orthodox Church after a miraculous
appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ when he was serving in
the New Calendar Archdiocese of Thyatira of Great
Britain and as doctor. Within the Genuine Orthodoxy,
he served with great zeal and developed intense
Missionary activity mainly in critical regions of Greece
(Kalymnos, Xanthi, Crete, etc.), and was
distinguished as a Spiritual Father by orthodox
people. He was also an assistant in the
administrative work of the Church as Secretary of
the Holy Synod. His life was full of holiness and
ascetic with great fasting and abstinence. His holy
prayer relieved and helped many. Towards the end of
his life (1971) he remained on Mount Athos and
reposed in the Asvestochori Sanatorium of
Thessaloniki, to rest from the ascetic struggle, having
spent himself for the love of Orthodoxy. In fact, he
predicted his death. His ascetic body was buried on Mount
Athos, where even today his holy relics are kept in the
Holy Skete of the Nativity of Christ in Katounakia of Mount Athos. There are even
many believers who confess appearances of him, after his repose, where they still did
not know him and he introduced himself as "Ignatius the new Panteleimon".

ST TARSO FOR CHRIST FOOL
Tarso was brought by her parents
to the Monastery of Panagia in
Keratea in 1949 because they
thought she was crazy. They
thought of tying her to the church
of “Life- giving Font” as
possessed. Holy Father Matthew
understood - enlightened by the
Holy Spirit - that she was fool for
Christ. He confessed her many
times and blessed her to continue
her struggle but not inside the
monastery because she could not
follow the program of the
brotherhood. A year later Saint Matthew reposed. She would
secretly come to the parish of Keratea and receive communion
with Holy Breas from the vicar, Archimandrite Father Petros.
Later she received communion from Archbishop Andreas in the
Monastery. She foresaw her departure from the world, she reposed
peacefully on September 24, 1989After her repose, there are
reliable testimonies of her appearances in various times of need
and of her appearance before the Throne of the Divine Majesty.

RIGHTEOUS ANASTASIOS THE ATHONITE was born in 1904 in the
village of Merkadasto,Tymfristos. A fellow woman who was from Lamia went
to the cell and begged him to treat their daughter well. The doctors said that the
girl had a terminal disease that would leave her paralyzed. Then he told them to
bring the child and indeed the next day they went with the little girl back to his
cell. The father took her out of the car holding her in his arms. He was a petite
child of 12 years old. He told them to put the girl on the bed, filled a basin with
water, took a cross and put it in the basin, said some wishes of the holy Father
Matthew. He brought the water to the child, the parents were standing next to
the bed, the faithful father Anastasios turned to the mother and asked her, "Do
you believe in Christ?", she answers in a middle voice, "Yes", he asks her again
in a stern voice, "Do you believe in Christ?" she answers again, "yes", he asks
her again in a thunderous voice, "I don't hear you. Do you believe in Christ".
She told him again, "yes", and approached her asking her again, "Do you
believe that Christ can heal your daughter?" Then she knelt down and burst into
tears saying to him, "Yes father, I believe, I believe" then she anointed with his
hands the legs of the little girl and sighed and said, "Lord Jesus Christ, through
the wishes of your saint Matthew, have mercy and heal your servant Irene as the
paralytic". He grabbed her little hands and lifted her up and said, "Go ahead".
Holding her hands, she started walking! Then the husband and wife fell to their
knees and with sobs they hugged their child, moved!

ABESS MARIAM OF KERATEA By this

pretext, that allegedly the abbess of the
Monastery, the late Mariam Soulakiotou, was
usurping the properties of those who came to
monasticism, but exclusively and literally,
because she and her Monastery consistently
followed the Paternal Orthodox Calendar. In 1950
she was tried and convicted, unjustly,
unnecessary and illegal. And she was locked up
despite her improbable innocence, in prison
where she tragically died on November 8, 1954,
the feast of the Holy Archangels (according to the
Orthodox Calendar), at the age of 64.Therefore, the late and blessed Abess
Mariam Soulakiotou was undoubtedly a holy Martyr and Confessor of the
present century, enduring with incomparable bravery and heroism this
cruel, even bloodless martyrdom, without longing, without bending,
without getting angry at anyone, with extreme patience and determination,
with wonderful spiritual prowess and exemplary magnanimity, always
having the Lord's Blessing: "Blessed are those who are persecuted because
of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5, 11)
After the change of the calendar (10-3-1924), the non-
schismatic Orthodox (ironically misnamed old
calendarists), sufffering persecution, gathered on the night
of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, for the secret
celebration of the vigil for the feast on Mount Hymettos
above Holargo, Athens. Around 11:30 before midnight, the
Holy Cross appeared in the sky white and very bright,
illuminating only the hurch and its surroundings, showing
that God wants us to follow the patristic old calendar. This
miracle was observed not only by the Orthodox
congregation but also by the police officers, who arrived to
disperse them. (Scrip Newspaper, September 15/28, 1925).
LATE ARCHBISHOP OF
ATHENS AND ALL OF
HELLAS AGATHANGELOS
(Eleftheriou) was born in 1888
in Constantinople. After the
encyclical studies, he studied at
the Great School of Genos. He
was Archdeacon of the
Metropolis of Drama. As a
Deacon, he studied at the
Rizario Ecclesiastical School of
Athens and then at the
Theological School of the
University of Athens, from where he graduated in 1922.
After the introduction of the New Calendar, he served
Metropolis of Fokis, president of the Panhellenic
Foundation of Tinos island and a professor at various High
Schools and the Pedagogical Academy of Florina.
Throughout his life he developed great national, patriotic
and spiritual activity, but he always had a conscience check
on the calendar issue, so after thoroughly studying the
matter, he joined the Genuine Orthodox Church of Greece
(1957). He was ordained Bishop on November 8, 1957. The
following year, 1958, he was appointed Archbishop of
Athens and all Greece. His recovery to the Apostolic
Throne of Athens upset the new- calendarist church of
Greece, which immediately launched a persecution against
him. As he was Archbishop, important events in the history
of the Genuine Orthodox Church took place, such as the
Consecration of Holy Myrrh (1958), the great Clergy and
Laity Synaxis (1958), the Aphorism of Chiliasmus (1963)
and the condemnation of the so-called Dialogue after the
Papacy (1964). He reposed peacefully on April 21, 1967,
after a long illness.

BISHOP OF TRIMITHOUS SPYRIDON (Pasios), born

in 1888 in Zelitsa (Kydonia) of
Aitoloakarnania, in 1907. At
the age of 19, he went to
Mount Athos and he joined
the brotherhood of the Holy
Monastery of Xenophon.
After 14 years of probation
he received the Great and
Angelic Scheme and the
name Gedeon. For his virtue,
he was also become Abbot of
the historic Monastery for three
years. In 1924, the memorial of the
innovative Patriarch of Constantinople forced him to leave
the Monastery, after 17 years of ministry and asceticism, he
moved to Kaufsokalyvia where he lived as a hermit. The
monk Gideon obeyed St Matthew’s invitation and joined
the brotherhood of the newly founded (1934) men's
Transfiguration Monastery of Transfiguration in Kouvara,
where he was abbot for three years. In 1948, "vote of the
clergy and the people", the monk Gideon was elected
Bishop of Trimythous for the Church of Cyprus. After his
ordination, Bishop Spyridon went to Cyprus and worked
with particular zeal and self-denial for the spread of the
True Orthodox Confession and the organization of the local
Church. The severity of the persecution forced the Hierarch
to retire to a hermitage in the Keratea region. He reposed
peacefully there on February 18, 1963, aged 75.

BISHOP OF MESSENIA
CHRYSOSTOMOS (name
in world Giorgos
Pouloupatis) was born in
1883 in Alagonia, Messinia.
At the age of 18, he became
a Monk in the Scete of
Panagoulaki where he was
named Chrysostomos. In
1920 he became Abbot of
the Monastery. In 1926 he
was ordained a deacon and
priest under the Innovative
Metropolitan Meletios
Sakellaropoulos. In 1935, together with the brotherhood of
the Monastery, he returned to the Genuine Orthodoxy. Saint
Matthew of Bresthenes was their spiritual father. In 1952 he
was ordained Bishop of Messinia under the Holy Synod.
The result of the persecutions and hardships suffered by the
fighter Bishop Chrysostomos was the serious breakdown of
his health. His death occurred on April 27, 1956 at the
Laikon Hospital of Athens, where he was hospitalized. It is
worth noting that even in his dead. Chrysostom faced
persecution. New- Calendarist bishop of Messinia
Chrysostomos Daskalakis did not allow one of the temples
of the Skete of Panagoulaki to be unsealed so that the
Funeral Service could be done! Thus, the coffin with the
reposed dead of Chrysostomos was placed on a table,
outside the sealed door of the Church of the Annunciation,
with an epichelium and omophorion and the bishop’s miter
on a disc. He received the prostration of the clergy and
people and despite the presence of two Bishops, the
Gendarmerie did not allow the funeral procession to take
place and the deceased was
buried with no ceremony!

BISHOP OF VRESTHENA
MATTHEW THE 2ND (name in
world Spyridon Lignos) was born
in 1893 in Amarousio, Attica, In
1909, at the age of 16, he met the
vicar, then Hieromonk (and after
Bishop of Vresthena and
Archbishop of Athens Matthew),
in the Church of the Ascension in
Pagratio with whom he connected
spiritually, in order to follow him
in the desert of Mount Athos. In the hermitage of St. Mina
stayed for 23 whole years. In 1952, he was ordained
Deacon and Hieromonk and in July of the same year he was
elected and ordained Bishop of Vresthena. He shepherded
his province (region of Laconia) with youthful zeal and
self-denial, with indescribable efforts and struggles. His
already shaky health worsened in January 1963. He passed
away peacefully. His funeral took place at the Monastery of
Panagia in Keratea, Attica.
METROPOLITAN OF
THEBES AND LEVADIA
IOANNIS (name in world
Charalambos Baltsakis)
was born in 1908 in Fteri,
Sperchiada. His paretnts
embraced the monastic life
together with five of their
six children. Father John
distinguished himself in the
monastery of his penitence
for his humility,
wholehearted obedience,
spirituality and asceticism.
For this reason, in the year
1947 he accepted the
Priesthood. In 1952,
Hieromonk Ioannis was
elected Metropolitan of
Thebes and Levadia. Peaceful and pious, he endured
everything for the sake of his flock. He reposed peacefully
on the 5th Sunday of Lent, April 6, 1964 and was buried in
the Cemetery of the Bishops of Panagia’s Monastery
Keratea.

METROPOLITAN OF
ATTICA AND MEGARA
MELETIOS (name in world
Konstantinos Kostakis) was
born in 1914 in Meskla,
Chania. He was dedicated to
the Monastery of
Transfiguration of Savior in
Kouvara, Attica, under his
compatriot Bishop of
Bresthena Matthew I (+
1950). On 3/11/1941 he was
ordained Deacon and on
20//11/1941 he was ordained
Hieromonk. He served in
many parishes of the Church
throughout Greece. In 1952,
he was voted Bishop for the
Holy Diocese of Attica and
Megaris. He shepherded his
province based in the historic
Church of Evangelist Matthew in Mandra, Attica. His
health had deteriorated and so he reposed peacefully on
April 4, 1966.

LATE METROPOLITAN OF THESSALONICA

DEMETRIOUS (name in world Dimos Psaro-
theodoropoulos) was born in
1902 in Galaxidi, Parnassida.
His piety was most evident in
1924, when, along with
thousands of other believers, he
did not accept the introduction
of the Papal innovation of the
New Calendar. He claimed to
attend the historical vigil of the
13th to 14th of September 1925
in the Monastery of Apostle
John the Theologian, during
which the Holy Cross appeared,
as "By God Confirmation" of
the Holy Struggle in favor of the
Genuine Orthodoxy. This
miracle shocked the soul of the
young Dimos. He joined the
Holy Transfiguration Monastery of our Savior in Kouvara
Attica, under the Champion of Orthodoxy Matthew
Karpathakis, then Bishop of Vresthena. In 1947 he was
ordained Deacon and Hieromonk by his Elder Bishop
Matthew. In 1948, during the reconstitution of the Holy
Synod of the Genuine Orthodox Church of Greece, "vote of
the Clergy and the people", he was elected Bishop and
ordained for the historic Metropolis of Thessaloniki. In 1950,
after the repose of Archbishop Matthew, he assumed the
presidency of the Holy Synod and the vicarage of the Holy
Archdiocese of Athens,
which he handed over in
1956 to the newly elected
Archbishop whose
ordinations he performed, the
Excommunication of the
antichrist Chiliasmus (1963),
gatherings of the Holy
Clergy etc. He reposed on
December 31, 1976.

METROPOLITAN OF
TRIKKI & STAGA
VISSARION (Ioannis
Baltsakis) was born in 1913
in Fteri, Sperchiada. After
the school studies, he was
converted at the age of 26,
joining under Matthew
Bishop of Vresthena in the
men’s Monastery of
Transfiguration of Christ in
Kouvaras, Attica. On
15/2/1941 he was ordained as Deacon and on 5. 5. 1941 he
was ordained as Hieromonk. He worked tirelessly in many
parishes and he was sometimes imprisoned and reformed
for the authenticity of the Faith. In 1952, he was voted and
ordained Bishop for the
Holy Metropolis of Trikki
and Staga. He slept
peacefully in 1977, at the
age of only 64. His
funeral took place at
Panagias’ Monastery in
Keratea, Attica.

METROPOLITAN OF
HERACLION AND
ALL OF CRETE
EVMENIOS (name in
world Emmanuel Sifakis)
was born in 1909 in Agia
Varvara, Heraklion,
Crete. After the circular
and high school studies,
in 1946 he embraced the
solitary life, joining the
historical Transfiguration
Monastery in Kouvara,
Attica. On 20/10/1946 he
was ordained as Deacon
and then Hieromonk by his Elder. In 1949 he was sent to
Crete. For his zeal in favor of the Genuine Orthodoxy and
his willingness to serve the persecuted believers, he was
persecuted with great fury by the Innovative bishops of
New Calendar and especially by the “Metropolitan” of
Crete Evgenios Psalidakis, from 1949 when he was
appointed vicar in Crete, until the 60s, when he was forced
to self-exile in mainland Greece. He was dragged to the
Courts 11 times, with the accusation of "falsification of
authority"! He was imprisoned and remained physically
confined to his residence for 8 years! This longing wish
was realized in the year 1973 when he was ordained as
Metropolitan of Heraclion and all Crete. He reposed on the
2nd of December 1981, after a long illness – which he
endured with great patience and determination – and was
buried in his birthplace, Agia Varvara, Heraklion.

BISHOP OF VRESTHENA LAZARUS (name in world

George Athanasiou) was born in 1917 in Drakotrypa,
Karditsa. After the encyclical courses and high school
studies, he served in the Greek Army during the war period
1940-1941. At the age of 28, he entered the Holy
Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Kouvara,
Attica, under the then Bishop of Bresthena and later
Archbishop of Athen Matthew, in 1945. He was ordained a
Deacon in 1947 and a Presbyter in 1948 by Archbishop
Mattheos. On June 6, 1955, he was enthroned as Abbot of
the Monastery of the Transfiguration following an election
by the Fathers of the
Monastery. On the
same day, he was
ordained an
Archimandrite under
Metropolitan Andrew
of Patra. As a priest he
served many parishes
throughout Greece. In
1973, the Holy Synod,
recognizing his
contribution, elected
him Bishop of
Bresthena based in the
parish of Holy Trinity
in Sparta and he was
ordained on January 27
of the same year. As
Abbot he was the Elder
of most of the Clerical
brothers of the
Monastery. Also during his days the Monastery lived a new
heyday both in human resources and in its building
reconstruction after the Florinite apostasy of few former
brothers of the Monastery. The blessed Bishop Lazarus
ministered to the flock of Laconia for 16 years while he
often made pastoral tours throughout Greece. He also
hosted many ecclesiastical events in the Monastery, such as
meetings and gatherings of the Clergy. He reposed in the
Lord on the 5th of September 1989 and was buried on the
7th of the same month in the Monastery under the Holy
Synod in the presence of a
multitude of spiritual
children and believers.

LATE METROPOLITAN
OF ATTICA AND
MEGARIS MATTHEW
(name in world Dimitrios
Makris) was born in 1926, in
Megalochori, Trikala,
Thessaly, and was the son of
a large family. At the age of
20, he left the world and
became a monk in the Holy
Transfiguration Monastery in
Kouvara Attica under Holy
Father Matthew. In 1950 he
was ordained as Deacon and
in 1955 as Hieromonk. As a
Priest he served many
parishes throughout Greece
and was a close collaborator
of the late Chancellor and
Chief- Secretary Fr.
Evgenios Tobros in the
Offices of the Holy Synod. In January 1973, he was
ordained Metropolitan of Attica in the Holy Monastery of
the Transfiguration. He was an overactive Hierarch: He
built magnificent Churches, a Spiritual Center, founded
new parishes and ordained a multitude of Clergy, Nuns and
Monks. He published many books and made publications
on spiritual matters as well as the Holy Gospel. His
contribution to the organization (Administrative and
Pastoral) of the Church and the Holy Synod was decisive
and invaluable. During the upheaval of our Holy Church
from the heretical doctrines against the Holy Icons, he was
a pioneer in the fight for Orthodoxy and the Holy Tradition.
By the majority of the Hierarchs, he fought for the unity of
the Church's crew and contributed to the decisive treatment
of the outcasts. His constant and persistent labors for the
Church resulted in the burden on his health and in the
redemption to the Lord on April 19, 2001. The late
Metropolitan was buried in the Cathedral Church of the
Holy Apostles in Mandra Attica.

ΜΕΤROPOLITAN OF FTHIOTIS THEODOSIOS

(name in world Triantafyllos Tsalagas) was born in 1928 in
Dibri Lamia by pious parents. In 1944 he followed the

Lygaria, Lamia under the Elder, Archimandrite Fr Mina
Vrettos who was man of great spirituality. In November
1961, he was ordained as Deacon and Hieromonk by
Metropolitan of Patrae Andrew in the Monastery of the
Transfiguration of Savior.
In February 1973, he was
elected and ordained
Metropolitan of Fthiotis
in the Holy Monastery of
Panagia Keratea, Attica.
The late Hierarch was
much loved by the
Orthodox flock because
of his sweetness of
character and great
spirituality. He founded
two Holy Monasteries.
The nun’s Monastery
(Gorgoypikoos) emerged
as a beacon of Orthodoxy
for Greece. Metropolitan
Theodosios was also
Overseer of the
Metropolises of Thessaly
where he ministered to
thousands of faithful
Genuine Orthodox
Christians. He was distinguished for his zeal in favor of the
Orthodox faith and emerged as a champion of paternal
piety, without being timid and succumbing to the weeds of
heretics but also to scandals and sorrows. Against the
shaking of the ship of the Church by the heretical theories
about the holy icons, he resisted with the other Bishops of
the Holy Synod and signed the historic pastoral Encyclicals
of the years 1992, 1993 and 1997. He reposed in the Lord
on February 14, 2002 in the Holy Monastery of Panagia
Gorgoypikoos, Lamia,
where he was buried.

METROPOLITAN
OF SERBIA AND
KOZANI TITOS
(name in world
Taxiarchis Vlachos)
was born in 1925 in the
village of Mavrommati
of Thebes of pious
parents. In 1945, he
was moved by divine
zeal and he left the
world, desiring the
monastic life and
therefore joined the
choir of the Fathers of
the Holy Monastery of
the Transfiguration of the Lord in Kouvara, Attica. He was
ordained on 25/3/1949 as a Deacon under Archbishop of
Athens Saint Matthew and on 30/10/1954 he was promoted
to Hieromonk under Metropolitan of Patrae Andrew. As a
Priest he served many parishioners of the True Orthodox
Church. In February 1973 he was elected and ordained
Metropolitan of Servia and Kozani under Archbishop of
Athens Andreas in the Holy Monastery of Panagia Keratea.
As a Bishop he labored and toiled for 29 years in his
province, keeping vigils, ministering, preaching the word of
God, confessing and constantly catechizing his flock as a
good shepherd, ordaining a multitude of Deacons and
Priests, monks and nuns. He also appointed Exarch of all
Macedonia after the death of the late Metropolitan of
Thessaloniki Dimitrios. He was peaceful, pious, generous,
patient for the sake of his flock. His life was a constant
study of the Holy Scriptures, accompanied by prayer. In the
meetings of the Holy Synod, the only thought and care is
that the divine and Holy Canons are strictly observed. On
December 12, 2002, he reposed peacefully after a short
illness.

METROPOLITAN OF THEBES AND LEVADIA

AVRAMIOS (name in world Athanasios Baltsakis) was
born in 1924 in the village of Fteri, Sperchiada, Fthiotida to
devout parents who had many children. He was the
youngest member of the blessed family of eight from which
the parents and five children followed the Monastic State in
the then flourishing Centers of the Genuine Orthodox
Church in Keratea, Attica. In fact, two brothers of
Avramios were later ordained Bishops; Ioannis of Thebes
(+1963) and Vissarion of Trikki (+1977). In 1941,
Avramios became a monk and in August 1946 he was
ordained as
Hierodeacon under the
Bishop of Bresthena,
whom he respected and
honored until the end of
his life. In 1952, he was
ordained as Hieromonk
under the Metropolitan
of Patra Andreas, and
began his priestly
activity in Thebes and
Chalkida. He also
served several parishes
mainly in Attica. In
1995, he was appointed
vicar in the historic
parish of Thebes and in
the Holy Church of
Saint Archangels.
Bishop Avramios was
always concerned about
the observance of the
Orthodox faith during
his earthly life. Both in the schism of 1995 and in the neo-
ecclesiastical heresy of 2002, he controls those in charge
and protects the rational Flock of the Church of Christ. In
February 2002 he was elected Bishop under Metropolitans
Gregory, Titus and Chrysostomos and in December of the
same year he was ordained Metropolitan of Thebes under
the Holy President Gregory of Messenia in the Holy
Monastery of Annunciation in Kalamata, reflecting on his
responsibility in ensuring the Apostolic Succession. Despite
being old and sick, he fights with a youthful spirit for the
better organization and progress of the Church of Boeotia.
Worthy of mention is that Late Avramios founded the
magazine of our Church "Thebean Voice". On February 13,
2005, he ascended to the Lord and the next day he was
enshrined in the Cathedral of the Holy Archangels of
Thebes and his burial took place in the Holy Monastery of
the Holy Fathers of Panaktos Boeotia, which was founded
and began to be rebuilt during his days.

METROPOLITAN OF LARISSA AND TYRNAVOS

NEKTARIOS (name in world Ioannis Tsikouras) was born
in Pyrgetos, Larissa to parents who had many children and
were pious. At the age of 10, he was orphaned by his father
and threw himself into biowrestling with his mother. At the
age of 17, he went to Mount Athos to become a monk. In
1960, he was ordained as Deacon and Hieromonk under his
Elder Bishop of Bresthena Matthew II and ministered to the
Zealot Holy Fathers. In 1965, the late Fr. Evgenios Tobros,
as Chancellor, sent him to the island of Kalymnos for the
service of the Orthodox believers. The Orthodox were
connected with him with unbreakable ties but the
Innovators began the persecution against him with
persecutions and prisons for the sake of Orthodoxy. He
erected the Holy
Monastery of Saint
Sophia of Kaly-
mnos and the parish
Church of the Great
Martyr St Minas
after many
obstacles. He also
built the Hermitage
of the Holy
Forerunner in Vathy
Kalymnos and
inaugurated the
Holy Church of
Panagia Kecha-
ritomeni on Rhodes
island. He served
many parishes in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese as well
as America. In February 2002 he was elected Bishop and
finally ordained Metropolitan for his birthplace of Larissa
on January 15, 2003 in the Holy Monastery of Holy Cross
in Kalamata. As Bishop, during his short-lived pastorate, he
offered his utmost - even though he was sick - to the
spiritual training and ministry of the Orthodox crew, always
peaceful and full of love for everyone. In the last months of
his life, he remained sick on his beloved island where he
reposed in the Lord on September 26, 2005.
METROPOLITAN OF ATTICA AND MEGARIS
PAUL ( name in world Konstantinos Karagounis) was born
in 1931 in Pigi, Trikala to devout parents. At the age of 3 he
was orphaned by his father and the mother took on the task
of raising and
educating her
children in the
Lord. Later the
whole family
followed the
Monastic State. The
late Hierarch Pavlos
joined the
Monastery of the
Transfiguration in
Kouvara Attica at
the age of 16. In
1954 he was called
up for military
service for one year because he did not follow the
Innovation of the papal calendar. In 1955 he was ordained
as Deacon and in 1961 as Hieromonk under Metropolitan of
Patra Andreas. He served a multitude of parishes in Greece,
ending up in Athens. In all the Parishes, he founded a
multitude of Catechetical Schools. He renovated many
Holy Churches. He also erected the Holy Church of St John
the Russian in his birthplace and the Hermitage of St
Efstathios, where many souls found refuge in the Nursing
Home of the Monastery. In the parish of Ilioupolis, the
blessed had founded a boarding school for needy children,
whom he raised with spiritual education and admonition. In
1973 he was transferred to the Offices of the Holy Synod
where he served as Secretary and from 1975 he was
appointed vicar of the Holy Forerunner Rouf Cathedral of
the Holy Archdiocese of Athens. In 1995, under the Holy
Synod, he was appointed Chancellor of the Holy
Archdiocese of Athens. In December 2002 he was elected
and ordained as Bishop under the Metropolitans Gregory
and Avramios. As Metropolitan he supported the work of
the Church in critical days and toured all over Greece as
well as America. Many times Metropolitan Pavlos was in
danger of dying, but finally the Lord called him on
November 6, 2005. His Funeral took place in the Cathedral
of the Holy Forerunner of Athens and buried in the
Hermitage of St Efstathios in Kryoneri, Kifissia, Attica.

METROPOLITAN OF MESSENIA GREGORIOS

(name in world Georgios Roussis) was born in 1923 in
Piraeus. He studied in a department of the Piraeus
Commercial School. Then he studied at schools of
Journalism and Hagiography. At a young age he abandoned
the worldly and entered the historic Holy Monastery of the
Transfiguration of Lord in Kouvara. He was ordained as
Deacon and Hieromonk under the then Bishop of Bresthena
and later Archbishop of Athens St Matthew. In 1958, he
was ordained, in the Holy Chapel of the 99 Saints of Crete,
Metropolitan of Messinia. He was imprisoned and tried but
in the end he was solemnly justified. Friend of monasticism
reorganized the monasteries and founded new ones. From
1995 he was president of the
Holy Synod of the
Church of the Genuine
Orthodox Christians
of Greece, as
Primate, and
served as the
Locum Teenens
of the Holy
Archdiocese of
Athens. He was
known for his
large and wide-
ranging authorship
and his pictorial talent
in iconography. He was a
great confessor of Orthodoxy against
the new heresies of the 20th century: The new iconoclasm
(1995) and the new ecumenical “ecclesiology” (2002). He
reposed on March 5, 2009 and was buried under the Holy
Synod at the Monastery of Annuncation in Kalamata, seat
of the Holy Metropolis of Messinia where he offered his
best for a half of a century.
METROPOLITAN OF THEBES AND LEVADIA
CHRYSOSTOMOS (name in world Christos Tzanis) was
born in 1941 in the
village of Ropoto,
Trikala, to pious parents.
The pious family had 5
children, Benjamin of
whom was the blessed
Chrysostom. Among his
brothers were the Monks
Fr. Dorotheos who
reposed in Katounakia on
Mount Athos and Fr.
Stephanos who slept in
the Monastery of the
Holy Fathers in Villia
Attica. The large family
spiritually belonged to the
Genuine (True) Orthodox
Church, at the time when
thousands of Christians
were shepherded in the
area of Trikala by Saint
Matthew the Archbishop
of Athens, later by the
Bishop of Thessaloniki
Dimitrios (+1976), since 1948, and since 1952 by their
Bishop, the blessed Vissarion of Trikki and Staga (+1977).
He personally experienced, with his family, the
persecutions against the True Orthodox in the 1950s.
In his spiritual life, he was greatly influenced by his fiery
brother Dimitrios, the later Monk Fr. Dorotheos. Demetrius
went around with the rosary praying in the city, despite the
ridicule of the worldly people. He advised his brother, then
Christos, not to be afraid of people's ridicule because they
were dead (spiritually). Soon Dimitrios became a monk at
the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Kouvara Attica. At
the age of 18, after finishing the 6th grade Gymnasium at
the time (rare for the province at that time), he followed his
brother into Monasticism and as a monk, renamed
Chrysostomos. There, he was connected by spiritual
friendship with the then newly ordained Bishop of
Messinia, Gregory (+2009), who taught him a lot about the
heart prayer of the wish (Our Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God
have mercy on us). When the Bishop of Patra Andreas,
suggested that he be called "Cherimon" (feast 16/8), the
venerable of Messinia Gregory suggested the more
auspicious "Chrysostomos" because, as he presciently said,
"one day we may ordain him Bishop"! "How will
“Cherimon” sound to the people?"
The two brothers in flesh and spirit longed for asceticism
and greater struggles. In 1962 they moved to Mount Athos
where the Zealot Fathers were. Initially they stayed in the
peculiar Xiropotamou Monastery together with other Zealot
fathers and he ministered as a nurse in the Nursing Home
for the old monks of the Monastery. Later they settled in
the cell of St Eleftherios in the Parliaments of St Anna and
finally, in 1964, they took the cell of the Nativity of Christ
in the awesome Katounakia. The area is rocky and steep,
without electricity and at an altitude of 300 meters. Back
then they climbed the mountain, while today it has 2,500
steps. The Kellion of the Nativity and of the Daniels are the
most famous of this Athonian corner.
On Mount Athos, Chrysostomos indulges in spiritual
struggles and incessant mental prayer. He had spiritual
guidance from the late first Elder of the Scete, Father
Klimis, with whom he had already been connected since the
Kouvara Monastery. His profession was iconography and
he was a master at rendering holy figures. The Cell of the
Nativity had collaborated with the Hagiographer Fr.
Galaktion Gamilis for the illustration of all the feasts and
main Saints of the year. Their icons can be found in almost
all churches of Greece and abroad. He performed the
Spiritual Prayer and experienced divine experiences and
liberation from calculus, without mentioning it in detail out
of humiliation and fear of losing the spiritual treasure,
except that he was teaching it to beginners.
In 1970 he was ordained a Deacon and Priest by the Bishop
of Patra Andreas in the Holy Monastery of Theotokos in
Keratea. Since then his responsibilities have increased due
to pastoral duties. As a Priest and Spiritual father, he served
the Zealot Saint Fathers all over Athos.
At the beginning of the 1980s, Chrysostomos painted a holy
icon of the Virgin Mary, Portaitissa, with Christ in her
arms. For 2 years he was in the Cell of Katunakia until they
were visited by a Christian proselyte, Chilean by origin,
who belonged to the Russian Diaspora. The soul of Jose
(Joseph) Muñoz Cortes was attracted by the holy icon and
with many entreaties he asked to buy it. The Fathers
categorically refused but in front of the great sorrow of the
proselyte Joseph, while he was leaving the Cell, they gave
him the holy icon. This image began to smell (!) and
perform miracles! The faithful of the Russian Diaspora
called her Portaitissa, Myrrh-Streamer and
"Montrealskaya", our Lady of Montreal. In 1997, Elder
Klimis reposed and the brotherhood elected Fr.
Chrysostomos as Elder of the Monastery.
He attended to all the problems of the Church and tried to
contribute to the progress of the Holy Struggle, with respect
to the Holy Synod. During the period when the Iconoclastic
studies of errant clergy were emerging, he refuted them
systematically and documentedly, defending the Orthodox
Tradition and giving spiritual armory to the Orthodox
believers. During the terrible Schism of 1995 (of the New-
Iconoclasts), he left Mount Athos and helped the faithful
and the parishes to remain faithful to the Canonical Holy
Synod. In 2002, with the appearance of the
Neoecclesiological heretic theories of a former Bishop, he
again defends the Orthodox truth and negates
Hagiographically and Agiopaterically the heresies.
Several times the Holy Synod elected him to the rank of
Bishop, without accepting the office of Bishop. In 2005, the
Holy Synod invited him to appear and announced his
election as Bishop. On February 24, 2005, "the lamp is
placed on the lamp" and Fr. Chrysostomos is ordained as
Bishop of the Holy Metropolis of Thebes and Levadea.
As Metropolitan of Thebes, the venerable Chrysostomos
did not rest on the temporary honors of the office but
deservedly won the Cross of the High Priesthood. He
reorganized the Holy Monasteries of the Metropolis. The
Holy Monastery of the Holy Fathers, of which he was
Spiritualist father and Abbot, reached the number of 18
monks and ordained 7 clergy who offered to our wintering
Church. The Holy Monastery of St Georgios in
Melissochori, Thebes, from 2 nuns exceeds 25. It oversees
other Confraternities, apart from the Metropolis, and took
care of the return to the Ecclesiastical society of
Monasteries and Convents. As Bishop he ordained a
multitude of Monks, Nuns, and 4 Clerics from schisms. It
also contributed to the building increase. The year 2009 is a
landmark year in the Church of the G.O.C. of Greece. The
venerable Archbishop and Metropolitan of Messinia
Grigorios reposed and Chrysostomos is taking over as
President of the Holy Synod.
He continues and strengthens the publication of our
Church's organ, "The Theban Voice" and promotes
publications of a spiritual and apologetic nature.
Metropolitan Chrysostomos ordained 3 Metropolitans in
Greece.
In 2017, the Hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church of
the Diaspora under His Beatitude the Metropolitan of
Chisinau and all Moldova Mr. Adrian requests through an
official Synodal request and Orthodox Confession of Faith
the restoration of the 1971 church union of the G.O. Church
of Greece with the Russian Orthodox Church of the
Diaspora. A year later, the Holy Synod under the Blessed
Primate Chrysostomos accepted the request and a historic,
concelebration meeting of the two Primates of Greece and
the Russian Diaspora took place. After 45 years, the
injustice against our Church is lifted and the request of the
Hellenic Hierarchy for a clear condemnation of the
Innovators from the remnant of the Orthodox Russian
Diaspora is satisfied with today's Holy Synod of Russian
diaspora.
Despite his illnesses and the fact that he lived with oxygen
in the last years, his inexhaustible love did not spare him to
travel hundreds of kilometers to visit Temples and the
Flock of our Church. Even only his holy ascetic form, the
one bleached in the Holy Struggle, the bent flesh from
excessive exercise and fasting, created feelings of awe and
reverence. The venerable Hierarch Chrystomos was an
pious figure, as if taken from a Byzantine iconography. An
apologist and defender of Orthodoxy, he did not hesitate to
hold informal dialogues with former brothers in Christ
(such as the Andrewite Synod of Fr. Stefanos Tsakiroglou)
for the unity in Christ. He himself, as Hieromonk, was a
member of the Dialogue in Love and Truth committee with
the Florinite faction in the years 1990-1992. His soul was
burning for the restoration of the Schisms and the progress
of the Church, the triumph of Orthodoxy. In his speeches,
Doric and simple, but full of spiritual and paternal speech.
Pious in the Divine Liturgies and confessor who rested a
great number of souls. It is no coincidence that he increased
the Flock of his Metropolis during his Archpriestly
Ministry.
He was the most slandered Primate of our Church (after St.
Matthew of Bresthena) among the enemies of our Church.
His saintly personality caused fear, envy and consternation
in various subordinates. They forged and invented many
accusations and slanders against the holy Hierarch. To the
centers they labored... (cf. Acts 16’ 14) The anxiety and the
constant cares steadily burdened his shaken health.
He fell asleep on January 16, 2023 and the funeral took
place in the Holy Forerunner Cathedral of Athens the next
day. His burial took place in the cemetery of the Holy
Monastery of the Holy Fathers of Villion Oinois Attica. His
holy relic was an irrefutable witness of his defiance towards
God, an indisputable fact to orthodox believers and
hypocrites, of anger "a sign of contradiction" (Luke 2:34) to
atheists and blasphemers. God alone knows what He wants
to reveal about His servant. We do not dwell only on the
flexibility of his remains, but on the holiness of his life, his
adherence to Orthodoxy, his unfeigned humility and his
tears of love for God and every creature in His image.
