Physical quantities

By:Ma'en Jarrr

scalar quantities: quantities that are fully described by only the

magnitude (they have no direction.
(ex: mass, time density, pressure, temperature current, distance, speed,
physical
work, energy, power …etc.)
quantities

Vector quantities: quantities which are described by their

magnitude and direction.
(ex: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force,
momentum, impulse, moment… etc.

Base quantities: seven primary quantities which do not require any

other physical quantity to define it, and considered
Physical to be the base to compose other quantities in physics.
quantities

Derived quantities: quantities that are derived from other

quantities and can be defined using word equation

derived units: the units for the derived quantities are defined with reference to the base
units.
Base unit: the units for the base quantities are defined without reference to any other
units

* There are seven base quantities in Physics: Base quantity Base unit

*All other quantities are considered to be Length(l) m (meter)

derived quantities time(t) s (second)
Mass(m) Kg (Kilogram)
Current(I) A (Ampere)
Temperature(T) K (Kelvin)
Amount of substance mol (mole)
Intensity of light c (Candela)

Homogeneity

Homogeneous equation: is an equation that has the Same units(dimensions) for

its two sides

-Any physical formula has to be: 1-homogeneous

2-numerically correct

- Even if a given formula is homogeneous, it is still could be incorrect because it

might be numerically incorrect.
Example:
K.E= mv2 1-show that this equation is homogeneous in respect
to base units
2- Is the formula correct? Why?

Ans.:
1-
L.H.S R.H.S:
J=Nm (Work= force. Displacement) Kg(ms-1)2
N=Kgms-2 (f=ma) Kgm2s-2
J=Kgms .m
-2 L.H.S= R.H.S
J=Kgm2s-2 The equation is homogeneous

2- the formula is incorrect because it is numerically incorrect since

K.E=½mv2 ( a constant number is missing)

Past papers exercises:

1- State the unit of the base quantity current.

(1)

Determine the base units of potential difference.

3- The joule is the SI unit of energy. Express the joule in the base units of the SI system.
(1)

A candidate in a physics examination has worked out a formula for the kinetic energy E of a solid
sphere spinning about its axis. His formula is

E  12 r 5 f 2

Where  is the density of the sphere, r is its radius and f is the rotation frequency. Show that
this formula is homogeneous with respect to base units.

Why might the formula still be incorrect?
