LAND CAPABILITY CLASSES/SUB-CLASSES
SYMBOL BRIEF DESCRIPTION
X Usually level land or slightly depressed, wherein water either sea or fresh stays most of the time
and cannot be economically drained thus making it impossible to utilize the land either for crops, trees or
pasture. Best suited for fishpond or for recreation.
Bw Good land, level to nearly level; occurs in depressions; can be cultivated safely but
requires protection from occasional overflow and easily applied conservation and soil management practices.
Bs Good land, level to nearly level; can be cultivated safely but due to low fertility,
shallowness and droughtiness needs special soil management and improvement practices to restore and
maintain its productivity.
Be Good land, nearly level to gently sloping, slightly eroded, can be cultivated safely but
requires erosion control measures and easily applied conservation practices like control farming and strip
cropping.
Ce Moderately good land; moderately sloping; slightly to moderately eroded; can be
cultivated safely if carefully planned erosion control measures, careful management and intensive conservation
practices are observed. This will include installing of terraces supported by contour farming and strip
cropping.
Cs Moderately good land; moderately sloping; slightly eroded; can be cultivated safely but
due problems special soil management and intensive conservation practices.
De Fairly good land; strongly sloping; slightly to moderately eroded; can be cultivated occasionally
if handled with care, requires very careful management and complex conservation practices which includes a
system of terraces with properly laid out terrace outlets, strip cropping and contouring. Best suited to tree farm or
pasture.
N Steep, land; moderately to severely eroded, or shallow for cultivation making it unfit for
seasonal cultivation. Suited to pasture or forest with careful management.
