+ ANY EXCAVATIONS REQUIRING BACKFILLING BEHIND THE STRUCTURE SHALL BE PERMEABLE TO GROUND WATER FLOWS AND THUS IT
SHALL BE WITH A CONTROLLED FILL. THE FILL SHALL BE PIECES OF HARD DURABLE ROCK, BASALT IS ACCEPTABLE. CONCRETE, MASONRY,
BRICK AND SIMILAR MATERIALS SHALL NOT BE USED. ALL MATERIAL SHALL BE AGREED WITH THE ENGINEER AS SUITABLE.
+ ACCEPTABLE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF THE FILL IS THAT HAVING THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGE BY MASS PASSING THROUGH SIEVES
OF 300mm 100%, 200mm 30-100%, 75mm 10-50%, 20mm 0-25%.
+ ALL BACKFILL SHALL BE COMPACTED IN LAYERS TO ENSURE A STABLE CONDITION AS SOON AS PRACTICAL AFTER DEPOSITION.
+ THE MAXIMUM DEPTH OF MATERIAL DEPOSITED BETWEEN COMPACTION IS 400mm. COMPACTION SHALL BY AT LEAST 8 PASSES OF A
VIBRATING ROLLER OF OVER 2.5kN PER 100mm TRAVELING AT LESS THAN 2km PER HOUR.
+ APPROVAL OF THE ENGINEER SHALL BE OBTAINED BEFORE THE NEXT LAYER IS DEPOSITED ON EACH LAYER OF COMPACTED MATERIAL.
1. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this method statement is to carryout Backfilling works by meeting the
technical specification and complying with standards.
2. SCOPE
The scope of this method statement includes material inspection, backfilling,
compaction and testing at "Yondr-MUM1X0 Data Center” project, while executing it in
accordance with Technical specifications.
3. REFERENCE
Technical Specification & BOQ
IS 2720 – Part 8 - 1920 (Reaffirmed May 2020) Method of test for soil,
determination of water content & dry density relation using heavy compaction.
IS 2720 – Part 28 - 1974 (Reaffirmed May 2020) Method of test for soil,
determination of dry density of soil by sand replacement method.
IS 2720 – Part 29 - 1975 (Reaffirmed May 2020) Method of test for soil,
determination of dry density of soil by core cutter method.
5. MATERIAL USED
Excavated soil/ Approved earth.
6. PROCEDURE
A. MATERIAL:
Sample from backfill earth shall be tested to identify optimum moisture content, the
maximum dry density (MDD), gradation and the percentage of the fines which
should confirm with the project specification.
Soil must be spread in layers in accordance to the layer thickness not exceeding
300mm.
B. GENERAL:
Ensure backfilling area is barricaded as per project safety plan as applicable.
Backfilling around/above, masonry / concrete / hume pipe drain excavation shall
be done with approved material after concrete / masonry / hume pipe is fully set
and carried out in such a way as not to cause undue thrust on any part of the
structure and / or not to cause differential settlement.
All space between the walls, footings and other foundation structure, and the side
of the excavation shall be refilled to the original surface, making in layers not
exceeding 700 mm compacted thickness and brought to required density using
suitable compaction tool/ equipment such as mechanical tamper, rammer or
plate/roller compactor, as suitable.
For general fill, filling will be done not more than 1000mm filling.
C. SEQUENCE OF WORK:
All repair works for concrete surfaces and waterproofing if any shall be carried out
and get inspected and approved in prior of initiating backfilling activity
The trench to be backfilled shall first be cleaned properly for any accumulated
debris, reinforcements, formwork materials etc.
The soil shall be dumped at one place and spread in specified thickness using
suitable equipment or manually.
Then the soil shall be graded using motor grader/other leveling
equipment/manually to prepare an even compacting layer.
Moisture content of the soil shall be checked and ensured prior to starting
compaction.
