Lecture 13

This document provides an introduction to reservoir simulation using compositional models. It discusses that compositional simulators track the separate components in oil and gas phases and compute phase properties as a function of time based on mass balances for each hydrocarbon component. The uses, advantages, and disadvantages of compositional simulators are presented. Compositional simulators are useful for modeling volatile oils and gas condensates where compositional changes are important. While more accurate, compositional simulators require more computation time compared to black oil models.

Black oil vs. Compositional Simulator

INTRODUCTION

• Compositional reservoir simulators account for multiphase flow and interfacial mass
transfer of each component in a hydrocarbon system.
• This model usually defines three phases (again gas, oil and water) but the actual
compositions of the oil and gas phases are explicitly recognized due to their more
complicated PVT behavior.
• That is, the separate components (C1, C2, C3, etc.) in the oil and gas phases are explicitly
tracked
• At each node, phase pressure, phase saturation and overall composition are computed
as a function of time.
• In a compositional model, we in principle make mass balances for each hydrocarbon
component, such as methane, ethane, propane, etc.

USES

Compositional simulators are particularly useful in describing:

• Gas condensate and volatile oil reservoirs.
• Gas cycling processes
• Some thermal recovery processes, in which compositional changes are important.
• Cases in which gas injection/re-injection into an oil produces a large compositional
change in the fluids.
• Even if we are not injecting gas into a reservoir, we may still need to consider
compositional simulation if there are large compositional variations with depth and/or
direction, and also when there is large temperature variations with depth.
• When surface facilities designers need detailed compositions of the production stream.

ADVANTAGES

Compositional simulators can account for the effects of composition on:

• Phase behavior
• Multi-contact miscibility
• Immiscible or near-miscible displacement behavior in compositionally-dependent
mechanisms, such as vaporization, condensation, and oil swelling
• Composition-dependent phase properties, such as viscosity and density, on miscible
sweep-out
• Interfacial Tension (IFT) and especially the effect on residual oil saturation.

DISADVANTAGES

• The time required for compositional simulation is more than black-oil simulation
because of the calculations are depended on how many phases are present and the
composition and properties of those phases. Also There are more equations to solve
because there are more components.
• Modeling viscous fingering in large grid blocks is not easy. The effects are usually
ignored and complete mixing of fluids within a grid block assumed.
• Numerical dispersion is an issue in both black-oil and compositional simulation, but can
have a greater effect in compositional.
• Calculating phase composition around the critical point or in the plait-point region can
be difficult. K-values and physical property calculations (as well as the equation of
state) are less accurate in plait-point region. Experimental data in this region (used to
calibrate EOS) are often lacking.

BLACKOIL VS. COMPOSITIONAL MODELS

 Black Oil Simulator

• Oil & Gas Phases are represented by one component
• Assume composition of gas & oil components are constant with pressure and time
• Simple
• Less computation time
• …etc.

 Compositional Simulator
• Oil & gas Phases are represented by multi components mixture
• Assume the reservoir fluids at all temperature, pressure, composition & time can be represented by EOS (PR,
SRK)
• Complicated
• More computation time
• …etc.
