Project Problems

This document contains 9 problems related to machine design and analysis. The problems involve designing shafts, springs, pulleys, keys and rods given specific loading and dimensional conditions. Finite element analysis is required using software such as Abaqus or Ansys to analyze stress, buckling, fatigue life and other factors for each design. Suitable materials must be specified for each part based on the given conditions and intended use.

Problem 1
A shaft is to be designed to support the spur pinion and helical gear shown in
Figure. Two bearing are spaced 700 mm. The bearing A is cylindrical roller and
is to take only radial load, bearing B is to take the thrust load of 900 N produced
by helical gear and its share of the radial load. The bearing B can be a ball bearing.
The radial loads of both gears are in the same plane, and are 2.7 kN for the pinion
and 900 N for gear. The shaft speed is 1200 rev/min. Design the shaft. Make
sketch using SolidWorks, showing all fillet sizes, keyways, shoulders, and
diameters. Specify the materials and its heat treatment.
Also, perform finite element analysis using Abaqus/Ansys.

Problem 2
A heat steel shaft is to be designed to support the spur gear and overhanging worm
gear as shown in Fig. 2. A bearing at A takes purely radial load. The bearing at B
takes worm-thrust load for either direction of rotation. The dimensions and
loading are shown in the Fig. 2. Note that the radial loads are in the same plane.
The shaft speed is 310 rpm. Design the shaft. Make sketch using SolidWorks,
showing all fillet sizes, keyways, shoulders, and diameters. Specify the materials
and its heat treatment.
Also, perform finite element analysis using Abaqus/Ansys.

Problem 3

In an industry a shaft is to be designed for mechanical power transmission. The

layout with the power distribution is shown in the Fig. 1 (Convert given units into
SI units). Power transmission is to be at 200 rpm with maximum torsional
deflection not to exceed 30. Specify a suitable material and estimate the least
possible diameter of the shaft. Design the shaft in SolidWorks including features
like fillets, keyways and shoulders etc.
Perform finite element analysis using Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 4

Calculate the torsional shear strength of a helical compression spring

manufactured of an alloy steel A227–64 Class 1 hard-drawn spring wire with an
ultimate tensile strength of 1380 MPa. If the spring has an outer diameter of 70
mm and 15 turns with square ends, find the permanent free length of the spring
safe against yielding. Check also, this length against buckling.
Perform finite element stress analysis and buckling analysis using Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 5

A pulley, 2 m in diameter with six arms elliptical in cross-section with the major
and minor axes in 3: 1 ratio is used to transmit 260 KW from the shaft of a
hydraulic turbine at 200 rpm. Specify suitable material and find out the
dimensions of each axis at the hub. Design the pulley in SolidWorks and Perform
finite element analysis using Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 6

Consider a rectangular steel bar 15 × 250mm cantilevered to a steel channel of

250 mm using four bolts. If an external load of 18 kN is applied, compute,
(1) For each bolt, the resultant load acting on it.
(2) For each bolt, the maximum shear stress acting on it.
(3) The maximum value of bearing stress.
(4) The critical value of bending stress acting on the bar.

Design the parts in SolidWorks and Perform finite element analysis using
Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 7

A cast-steel pulley with a hub 50 mm long delivers a torque of 450 Nm. The
pulley is keyed to a 40 mm shaft by means of a square key. The key and shaft are
of steel with a permissible shear stress value of 62 MPa.
(a) Show that the key design can be based on shear or compression, both giving
the same results.
(b) Design a suitable key for the above system based on failure in shear.

Design the parts in SolidWorks and Perform finite element analysis using
Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 8

A solid circular rotating machine member is subjected to an alternating torsional

load of 100 Nm. and a steady average torque of 280 Nm. The member has to be
joined to a larger diameter shaft (as shown in Fig. 1), so that (D / do) = 1.5 and
for a fillet radius of 3 mm, (r / do) = 0.07. Calculate, for an infinite number of
cycles, the radius of the smaller member. Specify suitable material and assume a
suitable factor of safety.
Design the part in SolidWorks and Perform finite element analysis using
Abaqus/Ansys.
Problem 9

A steel rod of circular cross-section, connecting two structural members is loaded

under variable tensile load ranging from a minimum of 500 N to a maximum of
2500 N. For an infinite life of the rod under cyclic load, calculate the diameter of
the rod. If the rod operates under a specified number of cycles say 104, determine
its diameter. Specify suitable material.
Design the part in SolidWorks and Perform finite element analysis using
Abaqus/Ansys.
