Kerala Art Forms

Kathakali: Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world which is
originated in the area of southwestern Indian state Kerala . Kathakali is a group
presentation, in which dancers take various roles in performances traditionally
based on themes from Hindu mythology, especially the two epics, the Ramayana and
the Mahabharata.

Kalarippayattu: Kalarippayattu is the only form of the most ancient traditional


systems of physical, culture, self-defence and martial techniques still in
existence.

Mohiniattam: The name Mohiniattam literally means 'Dance of the Enchantress,' and
it does have a mesmerizing quality. The white and gold costume, arresting hairstyle
and the highly graceful movements in medium tempo, contribute to this aesthetic
effect.

Theyyam: Theyyam is a popular ritual dance of north Kerala. It is also known as


Theyyattam.It is usually the representation of a divine or heroic character from
mythology and one of the most spectacular oldest temple art forms of Kerala.

Chhattisgarh Art Forms

Panthi: Panthi dance is one of the most iconic folk dances native to Chhattisgarh.
Groups of trained dancers dressed in bright colorful attires come together to
depict ancient folk tales and myths through coordinated dance movements set to
rhythmic beats of drums.

Raut Nacha: Raut Nacha is a popular folk dance form from Jashpur district of
Chhattisgarh. It is performed mainly during harvest seasons by local tribal
communities.

Karma: Karma is a folk dance from the Surguja region that involves graceful
choreography. It brings together up to 80 dancers who move together in perfect
harmony and rhythm to drum beats.

Pandavani: Pandavani dance is a unique folk performing art form from Chhattisgarh
that narrates folk tales and legends from the Indian epic Mahabharata. Through
expressive dance movements, melody instruments and lyrics, emotionally stirring
stories from the great epic are brought alive.

Comparing these two, Both Kerala and Chhattisgarh have rich artistic traditions,
with Kerala's classical forms reflecting its historical ties to ancient Indian art,
while Chhattisgarh's folk forms are deeply rooted in the cultural practices of its
tribal communities.
