Team building

Warm up 1
Count the number of “Fs” in the following sentence. Take your time, but
only count once

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFC

STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Warm up 2
Spell it for me
Tell us about an activity that you are going to do for fun this
weekend/month. You can only spell it .
Example: G-O H-I-K-I-N-G

Difference between a group and a team?

Not all groups are teams
Is your team slucking?

“You can’t compete externally if you can’t collaborate internally”

Collaboration is a critical component in maximizing productivity,
innovation and effectiveness.

How does it feel when you do share of work while others do not?
What would your reaction be like?
Working in groups, read the small story below and discuss the answers to
the questions that follow.
A team had four members called Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done. Everybody was sure that Somebody

would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

What do you understand from the story?

What are some problems you could face when working as part of a team? Note
them in the table and suggest a solution/s to the problem/s

Activity : video clip

Many hands make light work." -John Heywood
Victory is not about a single man but about a team

Activity : Expectations
Paper folding
Fold the paper into two / tear the top right corner/fold the paper/ tear the top left
corner/ fold the paper/ tear the top right corner
Takeaway: the team leader needs to clearly communicate instructions to the
group/ The team members need to ask for clarification

Do you know why migrating geese fly in a V formation?

What is a team?
A team is a unit of two or more who interact and coordinate their work to
accomplish a common goal to which they are committed and hold themselves
accountable “

The survivors vs the left -behind

Too young to die
It is common/frequent in the workplace that one member will tell the leader that
I do not want to work with that person/ you can tell in meetings that this person
is domineering

How many psychiatrists does it takes to change a light bulb? A: Just one, but the
light bulb has to really want to change.
To change you need to have willingness to change oneself / I am here because I
want to be a better version of myself
Teamwork is like a toolbox. Diverse tools / every tool fixes a specific problem

Think of five things you can do better if you work as part of a team rather than
on your own
Being part of a team is different from being part of a group. While members of a
group only take care of the part of the task assigned to them, the members of a
team are collectively responsible for achieving a common goal. If you want to
succeed at work, you should develop team skills and learn to work as a member
of a team.
Think of some skills you need to learn to be a good team member.
For example: Be loyal to your team

Decision Making Games - Decision Making

A team made up of participants sits in a circle. Tell them that their airplane just
crashed on a uninhabited land and the airplane will explode within ten minutes.
In the airplane there are 15 objects of which three objects can be taken out of the
airplane
Place the names of the objects in the middle of the circle on the ground

 A box of Matches
 5 warm sweaters
 First Aid kit
 Transistor radio
 An axe
 A gun
 Inflatable life boat for 4 people
 Compass
 Anti insect spray
 pack of 12 water bottles

They have 10 min to reach an agreement on the 3 objects . Everyone needs to

justify their choice
Luckily a plane came to rescue them. When they are in the airplane on their way
home, it turns out that the airplane is almost out of kerosine and that next to the
pilot only one participant can stay in the airplane otherwise no one will survive .
In this case participants have to decide unanimously which of them can stay in
the airplane they have to make a decision within ten minutes otherwise the
airplane will crash tell the team that you can plea for yourselves but you can also
plea that some else should be the survivor . One participant thinks he should stay
“ I am the father of five children so have the most right to survive”
I think X needs to survive because he is a great pianist He is followed by
thousands of funs so she will be the biggest loss

Team building for employees

Winner /Loser/Activity view hardships from a positive perspective
Divide groups into groups of two/three. Ask one team member to share a
negative experience. Now ask the other team member to retell the same story,
highlighting the positive points

Winner/Loser

Time: 5–6 minutes

Purpose: Negative to positive perspective
Participants: Partners
Materials needed: None
Instructions:
• One partner tells the other partner about something bad that happened to them.
This can be personal or work-related and can have occurred recently or years
ago., but it must be something that is over. They can take about two minutes to
do this.
• The same partner then tells the same story but this time relates the good things
that came from this experience. The listening partner can help them explore the
good that came from the bad.

Desired outcome: Participants experience a way to let go of negative attitudes

and
emotional baggage.

Mission Statement

Time: 15 minutes to several hours

Purpose: Creating focus, passion, and group buy-in
Participants: All
Materials needed: Pens, paper, and any team requests
Instructions: Each person finishes the sentence:

“My vision of a team that works is _______________________”

“I find it challenging when________________________”

signed by____________________________

The entire team now creates one statement or visual that represents the total of
these vision statements.

Desired outcome: The team finds commonality of purpose and is more willing
to cooperate.

Group dynamics
Peeves and traits
• This activity allows team members to understand the challenges they each face
and the strengths they each have when working in a group;
• First, ask each team member to write down one pet peeve they have when
working in a team. (For example, “I find it challenging when people come late
to meetings because I feel like coming late communicates lack of care for others’
time.” Or “It gets to me when people get interrupted during discussions because
their contributions are valuable and our voices all matter.”);

• Second, ask each team member to write down one positive trait that everyone
in the group should know about when working with them. For example, “One
thing you should all know about me is that my silence is not due to disinterest; I
just need time
to do my best thinking.” Or “One thing you should all know about me is I get
excited during discussions and sometimes interrupt others out of enthusiasm.”);

• Ask team members to share both statements with the group in turn, with
discussion. As a team, discuss whether you have found the activity helpful. What
have you learned about each other? How can this knowledge be used to structure
teamwork and achieve the group’s aims?

Hopes vs Fears
Every team member needs to write their hopes and fears on sticky notes. They
stick them on the wall and communicate their hopes and fears

Contract Card Sort

AIM: Contract building
MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Produce your own contract cards. The bigger and brighter the better. Include a
mixture of positive and negative contract ideas such as:
o Listening
o Shouting
o Bullying
o Helping each other
o Picking on people
o Sharing ideas
o Giving things a go
o Being aggressive
o Respecting each other
o Calling people names

METHOD:
Use the prepared contract cards and ask the group to sort them into two piles –
one for what they want to happen in the group, and the other what they don’t
want
Individual goal-setting: Ask individuals if there are any of the cards which they
think would be good to work on in particular to help them get the most out of
the session
Scenario

You work in a large NGO and on the team that you supervise there are 12 people
one of whom, John, is viewed as arrogant, controlling, and undermining of the
rest of the team impacting morale and productivity. As the supervisor you need
to meet with John to provide him feedback. What will you way and how will
you say that?

It’s not about intensity, it’s about consistency

Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do”
