General
The Dynamic Positioning Induction course (DPIC) is a Nautical Institute (NI) certified training on
automatic positioning system for floating vessels opened to deck officers and masters involved in
navigational watchkeeping. The simulator training follows the highest level of conformance with
NI basic requirements for delegates aspiring to become Dynamic Positioning Officers.

Aims and Objectives

Operator errors during DP operations may lead to expensive downtime, or worse still; accidents or
incidents resulting in damage, pollution, personnel injuries or fatalities. This implies the need for a
comprehensive training program for key DP personnel along with accurate and realistic trainer
systems. The course shall enable DPOs and persons working in an offshore environment to
understand dynamic positioning principles and requirements.

Course Description
This course provides basic knowledge about the offshore industry and the operation of vessels with
dynamic positioning systems. General information about offshore activities, vessel types (AHTS,
OSV, Jack-Up Vessels, Pipe Layers, Diving Support etc.) as well as information concerning principle
operation modes and different classes will be given. The DPO education, record books and NI
certification is also covered.

Course Content
Amongst others, students completing this course will gain theoretical knowledge about the
design and principles as well as practical skills on the functioning of a DP system. The course will
cover the following key areas:

• Principles of dynamic positioning

• Definition of DP and principles of system operation
• Vessel motions controlled by DP systems
• Heading and position control loops
• The system control
• Elements of a DP system
• Operational modes and function
• Elements of a DP control system
• Thrusters & manoeuvring systems
• Assessment of vessel capabilities
• Graphic environments
• FMEA applications
• Offshore operations

Course Duration: 5 days

Training Methods
The course shall be a blend of interactive classroom instruction and discussion followed by realistic
practical exercises in a Full Mission DP Simulator according to Nautical Institute's (NI) certification
scheme. The five phase program shall include; introduction course, seagoing familiarization,
followed by advanced shore-based simulator course, supervised DP watch keeping, and concluding
with final candidate assessment.

implemented the following minimum qualification for entry onto the DP Operators Training
Scheme:
• Ship Handling Simulator Course
• STCW Regulation II/1 ‐ II/2 ‐ II/3 Deck
• Regulation III/1 – III /2 – III/3 – III/6 Engine
• Regulation III/6 for ETOs
• Prospective DPOs who are in the process of training for an initial STCW or MVQ certificate
can start the DP scheme and complete the Induction course, 30 days DP sea time and task
sections or Phase 2 of the Shuttle tanker scheme.

Training Equipment
HTTC uses the state-of-the-art NAVI TRAINER PRO-5000 Full Mission DP Simulator, a realistic
high quality training simulator for DP activities and navigation with the different vessels in a
fleet. The system is an innovative high performance concept designed for training of teams
involved in transferring and supply of anchored mobile offshore units. The simulator is built on
the Transas NTPRO simulator platform and the Dynamic Positioning (DP) is set to OSV 11 with
engine design power 2 X 3500 and Thrusters rated at 1X883; 1 X 1120 drop down/1X883 and 2
Azimuth FPP propellers. The Transas DP Simulator meets and exceeds the requirements of both
Nautical Institute and DNV SeaSkill schemes for Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO)
certification.

Training Location
The simulator training will be conducted at the Hudson Trident Training Center (HTTC) located
at No 6, Shaffi Sule Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, Nigeria.
