INSTRUCTIONS

1. Only neat and clean handwritten answers are accepted.

2. Individual Viva will be taken at the time of assignment submission.

Q. 1 The converter in Figure 1 is connected to a 120-V, 60-Hz supply and has a purely resistive
load of R = 10 Ω. If the delay angle is α = π/2, determine (a) the rectification efficiency,
(b) the form factor (FF), (c) the ripple factor (RF), (d) the TUF, and (e) the peak inverse
voltage (PIV) of thyristor T1.
Q. 2 A single-phase half-wave converter in Figure 1 is operated from a 120-V, 60-Hz supply. If
the load resistive load is R = 5 Ω and the delay angle is α = π/3, determine (a) the efficiency,
(b) the form factor, (c) the ripple factor, (d) the transformer utilization factor, and (e) the
peak inverse voltage (PIV) of thyristor T1.
Q. 3 A single-phase half-wave converter in Figure 1 is operated from a 120-V, 60-Hz supply and
the load resistive load is R = 10 Ω. If the average output voltage is 50% of the maximum
possible average output voltage, calculate (a) the delay angle, (b) the rms and average
output currents, (c) the average and rms thyristor currents, and (d) the input power factor.
Q. 4 A single-phase half-wave converter in Figure 1 is supplied from a 120-V, 60-Hz supply and
a freewheeling diode is connected across the load. The load consists of series connected
resistance R = 5 Ω, inductance L = 5 mH, and battery voltage E = 20 V. (a) Express the
instantaneous output voltage in a Fourier series, and (b) determine the rms value of the
lowest order output harmonic current. Assume α = π/6.

ratio of the transformer is unity. (a) Express the input current in a Fourier series; determine
the harmonic factor of input current, the displacement factor, and the input power factor.
(b) If the delay angle is α = π/2, calculate Vdc, Vrms, HF, DF, and PF.
Q. 6 The single-phase semi-converter in Figure 2 has an RL load of L = 6.5 mH, R = 2.5 Ω, and
E = 10 V. The input voltage is Vs = 120 V (rms) at 60 Hz. Determine (a) the load current
ILo at ωt = 0 and the load current IL1 at ωt = α = 60°, (b) the average thyristor current IA,
(c) the rms thyristor current IR, (d) the rms output current Irms (e) the average output current
Idc, and (f) the critical value of delay angle αc for the continuity of the load current.
Q. 7 A single-phase semi-converter in Figure 2 is operated from a 120-V, 60-Hz supply. The
load current with an average value of Ia is continuous with negligible ripple content. The
turns ratio of the transformer is unity. If the delay angle is α = 2π/3, calculate (a) the
harmonic factor of input current, (b) the displacement factor, and (c) the input power
factor.
