CHAPTER ONE

Background of the study

Introduction

Education is defined as the process of learning a specific subject that you can carry and value throughout your life. It is the watering down of knowledge,

skills, values, beliefs, attributes. In fact, education is the key to success because it brings you into a world of understanding and knowledge that will one day be

useful in your career. Through education, we can become the best version of ourselves, and if we keep it, no one can ever take away the knowledge and wisdom it

gives us. The importance of education is that with it, we can become better prepared, competent and capable adults in the future. Also, it can help us become more

intelligent, practical, and competitive when it comes to solving life’s problems, and become more productive. It is for this reason that education helps us to be

more aware of what is happening around us and makes it easier for us to be strong and responsible citizens of our society.

In the Philippines, the family is defined as the sub-unit of society where students receive their education about the world before engaging in the real issues

of life. The family is the foundation of society that strengthens the human world. Having a whole family, in a sense, motivates a student to study hard. Our family

is the first environment we face. We can’t choose which family we want but it’s up to us that has to be. Family and individuals with special meanings. They are

our base of support, personal cheerleading team, teachers, mentors, whatever we may need, even if we have to hear the hard truth. We are comforted and put in our

place.

A broken family is defined as a family that is divided or fragmented for a variety of reasons which will be studied in the next section of this study Children in

broken homes question their self-worth and may experience sadness, guilt, and unnecessary confusion. It can affect their whole life, especially their learning and

emotions. Living in a broken family has many effects on a teenager. The very person who is supposed to be there to help them is hurting their feelings. This

allows children to be raised by single parents, stepparents or other unrelated birth parents.

Students from broken families often face financial, emotional, cognitive, social and behavioral challenges that contribute to poor academic performance.

Students’ attitudes and behaviors also play a role in their academic success, these factors can be influenced by family environment. Students with broken families

lack self-confidence, struggle to stand out academically, and have difficulty socializing.

Slow academic progress is another way parental separation affects children. The emotional stress of divorce alone can be enough to halt your child’s

academic progress, but lifestyle changes and a broken, unstable family can contribute to poor academic performance

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

This section includes a review of relevant papers and literature that the researcher was able to locate for the investigation. These serve to reinforce the

study's theoretical and conceptual framework. focuses on readings from both domestic and foreign sources, such as books, journals, and other non-data elements

that bolstered the conceptual framework.

Carandang (2014) emphasised that a house should be a small version of heaven on earth, where people's emotions are nurtured rather than suppressed. A

person's contentment is dependent on this development of compassion, empathy, and genuine civility towards one another. Sala (2014) highlighted in his research

that parents can occasionally be held responsible for their children's inability to adjust to challenging circumstances. Some parents fail to provide their kids with a

healthy home environment. Husbands and wives have lost awareness of how their frequent arguments and personal jobs negatively impact their kids. According

to the researcher, most kids aren't ready for life's hardships. Youngsters view their parents as role models.

Students also have problems interacting in schools because of their insecurities with the situation of their families. They avoid their classmates because they

feel like they do not have sufficient needs to interact with them. They also get affected when a meeting needs a father or a mother because either one of their

parents is unavailable (Batool, 2017). According to Olokuntoye, students performed below expectations due to a lack of security, care, and discipline. Their

performances change as a result from instability in the home environment. Having a broken family has harmful effects on children because of the lack of

attention, and they are not well cared for. The students are distracted from learning because of their situation, and they are unlearned to study at home. The

children who have enough attention, communication, and interaction with biological parents were more stable and showed consistency in their academic

scores (Saxena, 2017). As shown, having a broken family negatively influences students’ accomplishments and academic performance. However, when

parents are paying more attention to students in a broken family it reduces having a negative result in their academic performance; they can be more able to

cope with what they are studying in school. Parents’ responsibility is to be involved in their children’s education, assist them in their homework, and provide what

they need in school.

Kelly (2004) came to the conclusion that sons (males) may be more severely and permanently impacted by divorce than daughters (females).2014's Omoruyi

noted that

The child's family is their first source of interaction with the

globe. As a result, parents and other important family members provide the child with their first education and socialization. The psychological, moral, and

spiritual groundwork for a child's entire growth is laid by the family. Families and homes are either structurally sound or not. In this sense, a broken home is one

that isn't fundamentally sound due to illegitimacy, divorce, separation, or the death of a parent. The main causes of psychological home situations include parental

hardship, broken households, divorce, and illegitimacy of children. He claims that such anomalous household circumstances are likely to have a negative impact

on the child's academic success.According to Burdon (1991), "such youngsters without sufficient training due to it is evident from this statement that surrogate

mothers are unable to keep an eye on the educational progress of the children entrusted to their care, even those who experience family dissolution or marital

dissolution and end up as truants. Since many of them are typically uneducated, they are unable to assist in teaching them at home.(Izake, 1963) claimed that the
majority of them had failed miserably due to the separation of their houses. He also stated that a broken family may occur from a divorce or from the couple's

passing. The issue of broken homes is a global phenomenon that affects both developed and developing nations. Children should happily be with their parents and

appreciate their parents' love for them. One of the tasks that parents should complete is to educate their children, as education for children does not end in school.

Set the courses and effects still persist with varying degrees in the various parts of the world. This is due to the fact that students' live education began at home. A

house is not just its walls; it is also its occupants.
