Time allowed: 30 minutes Total Marks Sections B and C: 15
NOTE: - Answer all three parts from Section ‘B’ and any one question from Section ‘C’ on the separately provided answer
book. Write your answers neatly and legibly.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
SECTION-B (Marks 09)
Q.2 Answer all THREE parts. The answer should not exceed five to six lines. (3 × 3 = 09 )
1. Give the chemical reactions to predict the products of the reaction between Propene:
a. H2O/H2SO4,1000C b. KMnO4 c. Cl2
Ans:
H2SO4
a. CH3-CH=CH2 + H2O → CH3-CH-CH3
1000C OH
b. 3CH3-CH=CH2 + 2KMnO4 + 4H2O →CH3-CH-CH2 + 2MnO2 + 2KOH
OH OH
c. CH3-CH=CH2 + Cl2 →CH3-CH-CH2
Cl Cl

2. A student adds Hydrobromic acid in an ethyne to make it vinyl bromide. Propose a scheme to recover ethyne
from vinyl bromide with appropriate chemical reactions.
Ans:
CH=CH + HBr → CH2=CH-Br
Alcohol
CH2=CH-Br + KOH → CH=CH + KBr + H2O

3. Chemically prove that ethene is more reactive than ethyne.

Ans:
When an ethene is treated with dilute alkaline solution of KMnO 4(1%),the pink colour of KMnO4 solution is
discharged during the reaction. This reaction is used as a test for the presence of an alkene and is known as
Baeyer’s test.

3CH2=CH2 + 2KMnO4 + 4H2O 3CH2-CH2+2MnO2+ 2KOH

Ethene OH OH
Ethylene Glycol
Alkynes do not react with dilute alkaline solution of KMnO 4. However, they are oxidized by strong solution
of KMnO4 to give oxalic acid. First the four –OH groups add across triple bond.
4KMnO4 + 4KOH 4K2MnO4 + 4[O]

OH OH
CH CH + 2[O] + 2H2O CH-CH
Ethyne OH OH
Tetrahydroxy ethane
Tetrahydroxyethane is unstable compound; it loses two water molecules to form glyoxal which oxidizes to
oxalic acid.
OH OH -2H2O O O 2[O] OO
CH-CH H-C-C-H OH-C-C-OH
OH OH Glyoxal Oxalic acid
SECTION-C (Marks 06)
Note: Attempt the ONE question. This question carries six marks. ( 1 × 06 )
Q.3 Convert 2,3-Dichlorobutane into 1,2-Dichlorobutane

Ans:
Heat
CH3-CH-CH-CH3 + Zn CH3-CH=CH-CH3 + ZnCl2
Cl Cl
Ni
CH3-CH=CH-CH3 + H2 CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3
200-3000C

CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3 + Cl2 CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-Cl + HCl

Alcohol
CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-Cl + KOH CH3-CH2-CH=CH2 + KCl + H2O

CH3-CH2-CH=CH2 + Cl2 CH3-CH2-CH-CH2
