Passage 13
Oscar Niemeyer
Imagine being asked to design a whole city. That’s the job the government of Brazil gave to a team of planners
and architects in the 1950s. Until that time, Brazil’s capital was Rio de Janeiro, in the southeast of the country. The
government wanted a new capital in the country’s center. The famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was asked
to design most of the important buildings for the city. A site was chosen, and in 1956 work began. The city, named
Brasilia, was built very quickly – in just forty-one months – and it became Brazil’s capital in April 1960.
The buildings Niemeyer designed for Brasilia are full of curves and simple, clean lines. Perhaps the most famous
is the National Congress building, with its two bowl-shaped structures and two tall towers in between. This style of
architecture is called modernism. Talking about his designs, Niemeyer once said, “I always try to bring beauty and
amazement.”
Niemeyer’s buldings can found all around the world. The Le Havre Cultural Center in France is sometimes
called the “volcano” because of its shape. The United Nations bulding in New York was the work of Niemeyer along
with the great French architect Le Corbusier. One of Niemeyer’s later buildings, the Contemporary Art Museum in
Niteroi, near Rio de Janeiro, looks like a flying saucer.
Niemeyer is also famous for his long life. He married his second wife when he was ninety-eight years old. He
designed a museum in Rio de Janeiro to hold the drawings and plans from his many years as an architect. And when
it opened in 2011, Niemeyer, aged 103, was there. He died in 2012.
