As we grow up, we normally look up to people whom we want to emulate. These people are referred to as
role models. They either have a character that we wish to have or do jobs that we would love to do when
we grow up. Jenipher is a grade 5 learner who wants to be a pediatrician or a surgeon when she grows up.
She is yet to decide on which area to take. she wants to become a pediatrician since she loves children
very much and would like to care for them. The reason why she wants to be a surgeon is to help people
undergo successful operations.
Just like Jenipher, we need to identify our occupations early in advance. This will enable us focus in our
studies to become what we want to be.
In pairs, retell the story then ask each other what you want to be when you grow up. Present it to the

A farm is an area of land that is devoted primarily to agricultural processes with the primary objective of
producing food and other crops: It is the basic facility in food production.
A farm usually has buildings where equipment such as tractors and supplies are stored. Some farms also
have buildings where livestock are housed. A plantation or an estate is where cash crops are grown.
Cash crops are crops grown for sale. They are grown in vast pieces of land and require heavy machinery
to weed, spray chemicals as well as harvesting. These crops include coffee, tea and flowers. Once
harvested, they are processed (apart from flowers) then exported to other countries. This in turn earns our
country foreign exchange as well as Creating jobs and improvement of infrastructure.

Communicable diseases, also known as infections disease or transmissible diseases are illnesses that
result from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic (capable of causing diseases) biologic agents
in an individual human or other animal host.
Infections may range in severity from asymptomatic (without symptoms) to severe and fatal. The term
infection does not have the same meaning as infectious disease because some infections do not cause
illness in a host.
Disease causing biologic agents include viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, multicellular parasites and
aberrant proteins known as prions. Transmission of these biologic agents can occur In a variety of ways;
including direct physical contact with an infectious person, consuming contaminated foods or beverages,
contact agents can be transmitted from animals to humans, and some of these can be transmitted in more
than one way.

In the country side school of Lusul, there was a standard five boy calied Imbaga. Imbaga liked to
steal. He stole pencils rulers and exercise books from his classmates. At the end of each day his
classmates would complain to their class teacher about their missing items.
There is no one who comes from outside to our classroom who then could be taking our things?
They complained. The boy also stole from traders in the market and also from his parents at
home. He used the money to buy sweets, ice creams and chocolate. This habit had grown in him
day by day until one day when something terrible had happened. On that day the boy was
crossing the road. He saw an old lady removing money from her purse. As she was counting it, a
two hundred shilling note slipped and fell down on the pavement. The boy quickly stood on the
note, covering it with his two feet. When the lady had gone the boy quickly put the note in his
pocket. At night, the boy hid the note among other notes in the pillowcase. He had gathered
hundred of notes and his pillow felt lumpy and fat.

Long time ago there was a poor woman who had only one son. Njoki for that was her name
wanted her son to realize that they were poor and could only get enough to eat by working hard.
Every morning her son woke up and polished his shoes and ironed his clothes carefully then
went to his playmates in the shop and streets.
In the evening he would come back with a group of men and would ask his mother for food.
Njoki was a generous woman and liked young people in the house. She gave them food
and told them stories. Everyday she grew sad because her own son would never take a jembe and
go to the shamba, because she did not want to embarass her son she did her sadness whenever
there were visitors in the house. Njoki was very generous and hardworking. This made her son
very proud of her because she called her Njoki’s son.

A long time ago the mooneye lion who was thought to be the oldest of the animals, prophesied
that there was going to be a serious drought in the Jungle. He advised other animals to fill their
silos with food in preparation. He said only the hard working would survive the prolonged
drought. On hearing this, the parents went looking for food and for sure signs of drought started
to show. With no time it was scorching hot, rivers dried trees were bare with no leaves.
But one who suffered most was the lazy hyena. He had ignored the advice and now it Was time
to feel the effects. There was hardly a morse to eat. And the elderly elephant who was as old as
the mono eyed lion, brought even worse news. That those who exhausted their food better
migrate to other areas since that was the worst drought had seen. he said he had survived all put
this was the worst
The hyena cried in desperation but there was nothing to do. He chose to watch while others
worked hard. As he was walking in the forest, he decided to rest under a tree. He thought of what
to do next. He looked up and saw a huge chunk of meat hanging from a branch. The meat
belonged to the crow. The hyena laughed so loudly thinking his problem had ended. He tried to
get but he was too weak. He started crying. He dried under the tree all this time the animals had
food.

We were out the field grazing my father’s cows and goats, my brother Kamona and two cousins Mutuma
and Kapure loved this job. This was our usual duty everymorning. On a daily basis we would graze by the
field nearby as we played and made jokes about each other. At around midday we would take the cattle to
a nearby stream river to quench their thirst.
After heavy meal, the cows would lie by the shade of a tree. Sometimes they would lie by the shade of
trees sometimes they would fall asleep or just lie down it was at this time that we sat down to have our
packed lunch. One day However, Mutuma called out loud ‘Boi, the cows seem to be in danger. They were
all mooing and racing round the field. We realized they were trying to choose a wild dog.
In fear the wild dog fled away. The cows had protected their calves.

friendship. This disease is most likely to affect people over 40. However, it can also attack younger
people children and even infants.
It is difficult to control the death of some people in some communities because of traditional practice.
Aids have no cure. Today at Kenyatta National Hospital about 15,000 people are examined monthly. Half
of them are proved to have Aids.

Along time ago, there was a man and his wife in a small village. The man was very greedy and he kept on
telling his wife that she never gave him enough food. The wife did not know what to do as more she gave
him the more he complained.
The time came for her to give birth to a boy. They called him Thiga, he was a lovely child strong and
healthy He grew up to fear nothing except quarrel between his parents. Thiga’s mother worked hard in
order to grow as much food as he could afford. She bought the biggest pot in the market so that he could
cook a large amount of food but although the husband ate all the food except a little for the wife and the
child. He never got satisfied. The lazy husband would not help in cultivating the land.
Thiga’s mother grew thinner and thinner. She went to the shamba every morning and would return home
in the afternoon carrying firewood. After arriving home, she would cook for her greedy husband who
spends his time visiting friends.
When Thiga became two years she knew her husband would not change she ran away to a far away
country where she lived in peace.

Boabab are found in Africa and Australia. They are among world largest trees. The trunk o¢ a baobab can
grow as big as 10 meters in a diameter. It cast a big shadow.
Boabab cook strange because of the way branches grow. They’re sometimes referred to ag upside down
trees because branches look more like roots than real branches. The explorer and missionary David
Livingstone describe them as big as a carrot planted wrong way. Its story goes like this;
Many years ago God called all the animals and people together and gave each something to plant. Some
planted yams while others planted fruit trees, cereals, vegetables and flowers until all the plants today had
been pianted. The last line was a hyena the most hated of all animals.
The hyena asked God for something to plant that would produce a lot of food to eat. He was told since he
arrived so late there was only one plant left baobab tree. The hyena was angry and so planted it up side
down.
Despite what the hyena thought the baobab does produce flowers and fruits. Its fruits have a cool taste
and greatly appreciated by monkeys. The fibre in its bark is tough and can be used to make ropes and bark
cloth.

Once upon a time there lived three brothers. They went hunting together and they ate whatever they
caught. They never went very deep in the forest. Inside the forest, it was dark and everyone was afraid of
going inside. If the three brothers followed a beast and it went right into the forest they left it and looked
for another one.
One day the other one looked for abeast but could find none. They beat all the bushes but no animal came
out of cover. In the afternoon, tired and exhausted, they decided to live for home, just as they were
leaving a large antelope jumped from a nearby bush. They ran after it. It leaped over the bushes but they
still went on after it. They followed and followed it until uneventually the antelope entered the dees forest

Tourism is better known as the tourist industry’s one of Kenyan’s biggest foreign exchange earners it
plays a very important role in the national economy. It brings employment. Our beautiful sceneries such

preserved. Tourist comes to see the wild animals in their natural habitat. Some of these animals are
leopards, lions, cheetahs, and rhino among others. We should conserve them for future generation.
In order to conserve these wild life the government has set aside large areas of land as national parks and
