CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter presents its different subparts mainly the background of the

research work, the statement of the problem, research questions, the hypothesis,

the significance of the research work, the scope and limitations, and finally, the

definition of terms are presented in this chapter.

Background of the Research Work

In a highly competitive world, education has become more critical than ever

before. It is no longer enough to merely attend classes and pass exams; success

now involves much more than that. It requires a comprehensive, well-rounded

approach that includes not only academic excellence but also strong social and

interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, adaptability and

flexibility, communication, and collaboration. Participation in class, a way through

which students can learn to master some of these competencies, influences their

readiness for college and career opportunities.

Class participation provides hands-on experience and is an essential

component of teaching and learning. Participating in classroom activities such as

group discussions, presentations, and debates enhances students' communication

and collaboration skills, social interaction with classmates, and creativity. In addition,

class participation helps to foster critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and other

soft skills that are valuable for college and entering the workforce.
The importance of class participation has been well documented in various

studies. Researchers have found that classroom participation promotes learning and

increases academic achievement. Classroom participation can provide an opportunity

for students to enhance their speaking and social skills. Ultimately, these skills and

experiences contribute to their employability, productivity, and overall success in life.

Despite its importance, class participation is not always easy or enjoyable for

some students, particularly those who are introverted or feel anxious about speaking

up in class. Teachers need to encourage students and provide a safe and supportive

environment that fosters participation and open discussion. he K-12 education

system implemented in the Philippines aims to enhance the readiness of high school

students for the demands of the workforce. The 12-year program prioritizes the

development of essential competencies and skills that are essential for success in the

professional world. The importance of career readiness has prompted schools to

focus on implementing programs and strategies that will help students acquire the

necessary competencies and achieve success in their chosen careers.

One strategy that has been identified as critical in achieving career readiness

among senior high school students is class participation. Active involvement in

classroom activities can help students develop skills such as critical thinking,

communication, and collaboration - all of which are important for success in the

workplace. It is through classroom participation that students can build confidence,

develop leadership, and interact with peers and teachers - all essential traits for

professionals in any field.

Telbang National High School is one of the schools that have embraced the

K-12 education system and has made various efforts to enhance career readiness

among its students. The school administrators have implemented various strategies
to encourage active involvement and participation in classroom activities. However,

the effectiveness of class participation in promoting career readiness remains

underexplored. Understanding the impact of class interaction and participation on

career readiness can help schools optimize their teaching methods and develop

strategies to improve student engagement and performance in the classroom.

Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between class

participation and career readiness among senior high school students at Telbang

National High School. By investigating the impact of class participation on career

readiness, this study aims to provide valuable insights on how schools can better

prepare their students for the demands of their future careers. Moreover, the study

aims to contribute to the larger discussion on the importance of career readiness

within the K-12 education system. By identifying the link between class participation

and career readiness, this study provides an opportunity for educators to improve

their teaching methodologies and employ new techniques that will enhance student

engagement and performance.
