1. Check the OTA for damage or contamination.
2. Clean all distal lenses using glass cleaner or 70% alcohol-to-water solution and a pointed cotton micro-swab.
3. Clean proximal lenses under magnification only as needed

Inspecting and Cleaning Optical Tips
1. Remove the Head Guard or / tip optic to clean the camera threads
2. Check the optical tip for damage or contamination
2. Clean all external lenses using glass cleaner or 70% isopropyl alcohol-to-

How to maintain your battery

• Charge the battery full before first use

• Charge the primary and spare batteries at least once every 3
months
• Do not turn off the system by removing battery
• Do not let any Lithium Ion battery get wet
How to Prevent a blade cut?
‘Home’ button it before and after

• Insert back and forth, rotate and pull, control the amount of force and
use hand to feel the resistance while watching the videoscope image
• Insert another probe (if you have one), or (articulate if you still could)
to get a better understanding with drawings or seek for second
opinion, how to un-trap it with lowest cost / time
• Walk away to cool down be patient and try again!
Inspecting and Cleaning the Probe
Early detection of minor problems can prevent costly repairs

• Inspect and clean the probe after each use with a soft cloth and a 70% alcohol-to-
water solution, then wipe with mild solution of dish soap and water.
• Always clean the insertion tube prior to placing it back inside the storage reel
•When to Send for RMA (Return Material Authorization) – Where: Singapore
Inspecting and Cleaning Probe

Insertion Tube

1. Check the probe for damage or contamination. Look for excessive wear in the bending
neck, loose strands of the braided weave, or separation of the bonding joints.
2. Clean the probe tip, including the lens and threads on the camera head.
Using the cleaning solutions called out previously and a pointed cotton swab.
3. Clean the rest of the insertion tube and system with a soft cloth dampened with 70%
alcohol-to-water solution, then wipe with mild solution of dish soap and water.

Always clean the insertion tube prior to placing it back inside the storage reel.
How to maintain your tip optics

• Dirty optical surfaces distort or blur image quality

• Clean optical tips and camera head frequently
• 70% alcohol-to-water solution and a pointed cotton swab
• Clean the camera head window and camera head threads
• When cleaning tips optics be sure to clean the internal threaded connecting
surface, as well as the optical surfaces and its exterior surfaces
• Be careful not to dislodge the internal O-ring
• excessive waviness or ripple, which would indicate dirt or oil contamination or
tip damage.
How to maintain your handset and Insertion
Tube
• Inspect and clean the handset before and after each use with a soft cloth and a 70%
alcohol-to-water solution
• Clean the insertion tube prior to placing it back inside the storage reel
• Why sending it back to Service Center annually is a good idea
- We clean your tips/thread under microscope
- We adjust your articulation to re-optimize angulation
- We might replace breath and sheath when fraying detected
- We check illumination power of your LED and Image quality
- We update your software and calibrate your measurement if found off-limits
- We produce a health check list and reports when requested
Other Operation Caution
1. Do not allow the conductive insertion tube, system or its working tools to come
in direct contact with any voltage or current source
2. Do not remove the battery while the system is operating.
3. This equipment is no ‘explosive proof’, and refer to “Chemical Compatibility” in
the Appendix
4. Keep the head guard on whenever no optical tip is in place
5. Loops or bends anywhere in the tube decrease its ability to steer the probe tip
6. Avoid bending the insertion tube sharply.
7. Never pull, twist, or straighten the bending neck by hand
8. Use only finger pressure to remove or attach tips
9. Lithium Ion battery and magnesium in its case. Should the instrument be
involved in a fire, use an extinguisher approved for use on electrical and
flammable metal fires. Water must not be used
10. Good practice to always fully charged battery prior to use.
11. Storage: Follow the Battery
Discharge (when using the instrument): -20°C to 46°C
Recharging: 0°C to 40°C
Storage: -25°C to +60°C
Other Usage REMINDERs
1) Before insertion, ensure target surfaces are <176°F (<80°C) (cool to touch)
• WARNING displays (orange banner) ~95°C
• CRITICAL displays (red banner) ~115°C and when persisted, shutdown automatically
2) Swab excess lubes from access ports when possible
3) Avoid kinking (sharp twist) the insertion tube
4) Never pull, twist, or straighten the bending neck by hand
5) If insertion tube becomes stuck, gently articulate, or engage “Home” function and gently work to
free the insertion tube.
6) Always use “Home” before withdrawing insertion tube

Temperature Sensor Warnings
When excessive temperature is detected, the applicable icon displays in the status bar, and
one of the warning messages listed below appears across the top of the display screen:
• Probe tip temperature has entered the WARNING Zone—this message displays in an
orange banner when tip temperature exceeds approximately 95°C and appears
in the status bar.
• Probe tip temperature has entered the CRITICAL Zone—this message displays in a
red banner when tip temperature exceeds approximately 115°C and appears in
the status bar.
• System is overheated, system shut down initiated—this message displays in a red
banner when internal temperatures exceed limits. Shutdown automatically initiates
and appears in the status bar.
When either the CRITICAL Zone or System Overheat warning appears, take immediate
action to lower the temperature to which the indicated component is exposed.
The Mentor Flex is powered by a 10.8 V (nominal), 73 Wh, 6.8 Ah Lithium Ion battery.
Installing the Battery
Insert the battery into the handset. The battery is installed properly when the latching mechanism is engaged.
A caution-Do not force the battery (1) into the handset (2), as damage may occur. The battery is keyed and may only be installed in the proper orientation.
Removing the Battery
Press battery release button (3) to release the battery.
A caution-Do not remove the battery while the system is operating.
Battery Charge Level
Check the battery charge by pressing the battery symbol (4) on the front of the battery.
Each light (5) represents approximately 20% of the battery charge capacity.
Charging the Battery
Connect the DC output of the battery charger into the Mentor Flex battery (6) and then plug the included AC to DC power adaptor into a suitable AC power source. The LED battery lights will illuminate according to the amount of charge attained. The system may operate while charging.
Note: The battery may be charged while connected to an operating Mentor Flex or while disconnected from the Flex.
Note: When the battery is fully charged, the LED battery lights will turn off.
Note: Battery run time exceeds battery charge time. A three hour battery will take approximately two hours to charge. Charging time will be longer if the battery is connected to an operating Mentor Flex system while charging.
Note: All batteries are shipped with a partial charge. Batteries should be fully charged prior to use.
