COT 2 Organic Compounds Properties

1. The lesson plan outlines a chemistry lesson on hydrocarbons called alkanes for a 9th grade class. 2. Students will investigate the physical and chemical properties of alkanes through a hands-on activity and presentation. 3. The lesson aims to help students understand that alkanes are widely used as fuels and discuss the pros and cons of relying on hydrocarbons as an energy source through a debate activity.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

(7E’s)

Grade Level/Section: 9-Mendoza Date: January 19, 2024; 10:00-11:00am

Learning Area: Chemistry Quarter: Second
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of the type of bonds that carbon
Standard forms that result in the diversity of carbon compounds.

B. Performance The learners should be able to recognize the general classes and uses of organic
Standard compounds.

C. Learning The learners should be able to:

Competency a. describe the physical and chemical properties of alkanes;
b. give common example of alkanes and mention their uses;
c. observe teamwork and cooperation in doing the activities;
d. propose solution to air pollution issues caused by the use fossil
(alkanes)
II. CONTENT Topic: HYDROCARBON-Alkanes
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References 1. Grade 9 Science Learner’s Module pages 262-276
2. Grade 9 Science Teacher’s Material pages 306-314
B. Materials Laptop, TV monitor, Board and Chalk
IV. PROCEDURE
Elicit A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
Directions: “SCIWORD HUNT”: Have the students recall the three types of
chemical bond using LUMI app. Ask them to briefly explain each word.

Engage B. Establishing a purpose of the new lesson

Show a video clip of fractional distillation to the class and let the students identify
it.
Then ask the following questions:
1. What industry makes use of fractional distillation?
2. What common products are obtained in the fractional distillation?
Students are expected to give fuel products. Ask these follow up questions:
3. What do vehicles use for them to run?
4. Do you know where the gasoline stations in Bongabon are located?
5. What are these gasoline stations?
6. Which gasoline station offers the cheapest price for one liter of their variety
of products?
Explore C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson
Divide the students into groups of five. Each group has its own leader, secretary,
time-keeper, presenter, and material manager. The students will bring-out the
materials that were assign to bring. Likewise, provide the needed laboratory
apparatuses.
Let the student perform the activity and answer the guide question without
discussing the procedure to check their comprehension. The teacher will
act as the facilitator of the activity. Emphasize the laboratory safety
precautions.

Activity: Investigating the Physical and Chemical Properties of Alkane

See the attach activity sheet.

Explain D. Developing Mastery

After the activity the students present their answer to the guide question.
A representative in each group will present and discuss the observations
and answer to the guide questions based on the experiments conducted.

Elaborate E. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily

living

Strengthen the concept gained by the students on the activity through

lecture-discussion and video-clip presentation containing fractional
distillation and other uses of alkanes. Correct misconceptions, as the need
arises.
Address the last three question in the Elicit part by asking students the
effects of putting up gasoline station in populated areas. Ask other
concerns on the use of fossil fuels.
Evaluate F. Evaluating learning
Administer a short paper-pencil test
Test I. TRUE or FALSE. Analyze the following statements. Write TRUE if the
statement is correct, if not write FALSE. Erasures are not allowed.
1. Alkanes are soluble in water.
2. Alkanes have low boiling point.
3. Pentane and butane are mainly used as fuel in the form of liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG).
4. When alkanes undergo combustion with insufficient amount of oxygen,
carbon monoxide is produced as one of the products.
5. Alkanes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Extend G. Additional Activities

Research and Debate

Research and Debate the pros and cons of using Hydrocarbons as primary
energy source. They will present their arguments and counterarguments
supporting them with evidence and logical reasoning.
VI. REMARKS
VII. REFLECTION A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the
evaluation.
B. No. of learners who require additional activities
for remediation who scored below 80%
C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners
who have caught up with the lesson
D. No. of learners who continue to require
remediation
E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well?
Why did this work?
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my
principal or supervisor can help me solve?
G. What innovation or localized materials did I
used/discover which I wish to share with other
teachers?
