Dry Gas Seal History

➢ The first dry gas seal for a compressor was
patented by Kaydon Ring & Seal in 1951
when it was known as Koppers Corporation.
Field applications of dry gas seal designs
were completed in 1952.
➢ The original patent was for Kaydon's
"Tapered Ramp" lift geometry, a constant
diameter / variable depth dynamic lift
design.
➢ From that first dry gas seal ever
manufactured for a centrifugal compressor
in 1951, Kaydon Ring & Seal has been
instrumental in developing the dry gas seal
into one of the most reliable and
maintenance free sealing solution available
today.

Dry Gas Seal History

➢ John Crane issued a patent for dry gas seals

in 1968 with field applications beginning in
1975, though the technology is now widely
av ailable among seal manufacturers.
➢ When the technology is aimed at correcting
the problems with dry gas film env ironments
by eliminating friction.
➢ Soon, the technology became a common
replacement for other lubricated seals.
➢ The patented spiral-groov e (constant depth
/ v iable diameter) technology of the dry gas
seal allows for easy lifting and separation of
seal faces during operation.
➢ Also the dry gas seal lift geometry can be
unidirectional or bidirectional, depending on
the specific design of the lifting geometry.

Dry Gas Seals :

During the last years the gas seals have replaced the oil seals in the sealing system of
a centrifugal compressor because of three important differences:
 1. System simplicity:
The gas seal system is simpler than the oil seal one. In fact we do not have pumps,
tank, over-tank and degassing tank of oil and all the instrumentation that we find in
the oil system.
 2. No process gas contamination:
The gas seal works with the same compressor process gas, so we do not utilize oil that
can contaminate the gas
 3. Increased efficiency:
The sealing is done by creating a gas film instead of an oil film, in order to reduce the
losses of power due to friction.

Dry Gas Seal main Components;

 All Dry Gas Seals are made by

two main mating seal rings;
 Rotating ring
The rotating ring has some
groove with a particular shape
 Stationary ring
The stationary ring has a flat and
smooth inner surface which is
located just opposite to the
rotating one.
 The rotating ring generates a
force that causes the stationary
ring to separate and create a
gap.

Balancing drum & Balance line role

 Balancing drum and the

balance line both play an
important role since it allows
both compressor sides to reach
the same pressure.
 The seal pressure value is the
same in both sides and it is
equal to the suction pressure
value and so we find the suction
pressure behind the balancing
drum.
 Both dry gas seals at DE & NDE
work under the same condition
with suction pressure on one
side of the seal and
atmospheric pressure on the
other side.

How Dry Gas

Seal Works

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

How Dry Gas Seal works

 When the compressor is not running and depressurized the
two rings touch each other because the springs behind
the stationary ring push it against the rotating one.
 When the compressor is pressurized the gas fills in the
chamber behind the stationary ring producing a force
which pushes it towards the rotating one. This system
guarantees the sealing also when the compressor is not in
operation.
 When the rings are in contact we hav e some small
chambers created between the stationary ring flat
surface and the groov es on rotating ring. When the shaft
runs the gas is pushed inside the groov es and it is subject
to a small compression.
 When the shaft reaches a speed of some hundred rpm
the gas pressure inside the groov es is able to win the force
produced by the springs and displaces the stationary ring
in order to create a little gap between the rings.
 In this way the rings are not in contact anymore, so we do
not loose any power for friction due to the contact but we
find a gas leakage.
 The leakage anyway is v ery little because of the small
entity of the gap.

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

How Dry Gas Seal works

 During the operation of the machine the

gas enters in the grooves and produces the
lift force.
 Normally the size of the gap varies from
three to five micron, while the grooves
depth is about 10 micron. You can
compare this values to the average
diameter of a human hair to understand the
operating condition of this system.
 We can have two different types of
grooves: unidirectional and bi-directional
grooves. The unidirectional ones can
operate only in one rotating direction, while
the bi-directional one can work in both
directions.
 The bi-directional grooves are used only if
there is a real risk of inverse rotation of the
compressor, during transient operations.

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

How Dry Gas Seal works

DGS is a self adjustment device

 The clearance between the stationary and the

rotating rings, on different operating conditions,
shall be maintained to meet two different needs:
▪ Minimize the gas leakage
▪ Minimize the temperature between the rings due
to the gas friction
 The needs are opposite to each other so we have
to realize a small gap to reduce the leakage and
a big gap to reduce the gas friction, and so the
temperature, on the rings. The solution is to reach
a compromise in order to have a low leakage and
the lowest possible temperature.
 Therefore it is indispensable that during the
operation the gap is kept constant to guarantee
the design gas leakage and low rings
temperature.

Dry Gas Seal System

Flare
 The dry gas seal system can be broken down
into five separate streams: Gas

1. Primary Seal gas supply

The primary seal gas is typically from the
compressor discharge.
➢ To feed the gas seal we extract gas either
from the discharge pipe or from an
intermediate compressor stage or an other
extraction directly in the discharge pipe.
➢ Seal gas is introduced to the primary seal via
the port labeled “seal gas supply”.
➢ Most of this seal gas flows across the process
labyrinth and back into the compressor, The
rest flows across the primary seal and into the
interstage cavity between the two seals.
➢ This gas is commonly referred to as primary
seal leakage.

CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

Dry Gas Seal System

Flare
2. Secondary seal gas supply N2

➢ The secondary seal gas is typically an inert

gas, such as nitrogen.
➢ Secondary seal gas is introduced through the
port labeled “secondary seal gas supply” into
the interstage cavity between the two seals.
➢ Most of the secondary seal gas flows across
the intermediate labyrinth and sweeps the
primary seal leakage into the primary vent,
typically connected to a flare system.
➢ The rest of the gas flows across the secondary
seal and out the secondary vent. This gas is
commonly referred to as secondary seal
leakage.
➢ The pressure differential across the secondary
seal is quite low, so the leakage is very small
compared to the primary seal.

Dry Gas Seal System

N2

3. Separation gas supply

➢ The separation seal gas is typically nitrogen or
air and will be injected across the separation
seal.
➢ This seal provides a separation between the
secondary seal and the oil bearing cavity, by
injecting a gas, typically nitrogen, between the
two sections through the port labeled
separation seal gas supply.
➢ This gas flows partially into the bearing cavity,
and partially out the secondary vent where it
mixes with secondary seal leakage.

CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

Dry Gas Seal System

4. Primary vent
➢ The primary vent flow is monitored to indicate primary seal
health, therefore the flowrate of the secondary seal gas is
controlled to ensure it is relatively constant at various
operating conditions.
➢ The total amount of seal gas able to go through
primary seal ring and then go the primary vent is about
5 –7 %,
➢ In proper working conditions the primary vent pressure
should be between 0.3 – 0.7 Bar G.
5. Secondary vent
➢ The secondary vent is typically connected directly to
atmosphere, and will contain the secondary seal leakage
and the separation seal leakage.
➢ The secondary seal operates at such a low DP, that the
secondary vent should remain unobstructed to avoid
reverse pressurization and pushing any gas back into the
bearing housing.
➢ Consequently, the secondary vent pressure and flowrate
are typically unmonitored.

Dry Gas Seal System

 Separation Seal
 A separation seal is also vital part of the overall seal assembly.
These separation seals generally fall into three categories:
1. Labyrinth or Tertiary seal
2. contacting bushings
3. non-contacting bushings.

Dry gas Seal Failures

An analysis of un-planned trips and

events of single line critical
compressors in a typical refinery
indicates above 20% of incidents are
due to seal leaks .

Some of these events could have

quick recovery but majority may
involve outages in the duration of 7 to
15 days and more resulting in
significant losses in the plant revenue.

Dry gas Seal Failures

Dry Gas Seal failed for many reasons,

Dirty seal gas
Liquid
Oil
Dirty buffer and separation gas

Vibration
Surge
Wrong installation
Etc…..

Contamination
 Contaminant is the main source of
dry gas seal failure
 There are three primary sources of
gas seal contamination:
1. Process gas (from the inboard or
high-pressure side of the seal)
2. Bearing lubrication oil (from the
outboard or low-pressure side of the
seal)
3. Seal gas supply itself (injected into
the seal)

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

Contamination

1. Process gas (from the inboard or

high-pressure side of the seal)
➢ Contamination from process gas can
occur when there is insufficient sealing
gas pressure to overcome the reference
pressure, allowing process gas to come
into direct contact with the seal ring
faces.
➢ Contaminants existing within the process
gas can then damage the seal.

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

Contamination

2. Bearing lubrication oil (from the

outboard or low-pressure side of the
seal)
➢ A barrier seal is required on the outboard
side of the dry gas seal, between the gas
seal and the compressor bearing housing
area.
➢ This seal is typically buffered with air or
nitrogen.
➢ The primary function of the barrier seal is to
prohibit the flow of bearing lubrication oil
or oil mist into the gas seal.
➢ Contamination of the dry gas seal from
lube oil can occur when the barrier seal
fails to function as intended.

Presented by : Mohamed Ibrahim , MLE, VA III, CRL, CMRP, MLA III, ARP-A
CLASSIFICATION: C0 - NON-CONFIDENTIAL

Contamination
3. Seal gas supply itself (injected
into the seal)
➢ Contamination from the seal gas supply
occurs when the sealing gas is not properly
treated upstream of the dry gas seal.
➢ Gas seal manufacturers hav e stringent
requirements for seal gas quality.
➢ Typically, the sealing gas must be dry and
filtered of particles 3 micron (absolute) and
larger.
➢ Filters are normally prov ided in the gas seal
system to address this requirement.
➢ While typical systems are supplied with
coalescing-type filters, such dev ices may
be inadequate depending on the source
of seal gas supply.

Rotor axial movement

 The compressor shaft is exposed to axial movement caused by different loads

and case expansion from heat and pressure or vibrations.
 The stationary elements are designed to compensate for axial movements of
the compressor rotor in relation to the compressor case.
 Compensation for axial movements is achieved by allowing the non-rotating
face to move along the balance sleeve (sleeve below the non-rotating face).
 The non-rotating face is sealed against the balance sleeve with a dynamic
sealing eleement (O-ring or PTFE filled sealing device), which slides on the
balance sleeve.
 If the dynamic sealing element is prevented from moving freely to adjust for
axial movements, this will affect the seal gap and lead to high seal leakage if
the faces are kept open. Or this will cause primary seal failure in case the faces
stay in contact.
