Breakage of The Tightening Stud of Cyl - Cover
We have occasionally received a report citing trouble with breakage of the tightening
stud for the cylinder cover on some of the captioned engines in service.
In this connection, we herewith would inform you of the cause and counter-
measure for this, and we would like to recommend you to apply it when the cylinder
cover is overhauled for maintenance.

1. Circumstance of breakage
The breakage of the tightening stud for the cylinder cover is due to corrosion pits
caused by invasion of the flow out water drain of cooling F.W. into the small space
between cylinder cover tightening stud’s thread and cylinder frame’s thread when
overhauling of exhaust valve and/or cylinder cover was carried out.

Broken part
Cylinder frame
There are two kinds of tightening stud for cylinder cover as shown in the attached
Fig.-1 and Fig.-2, that is a stud without an O-ring and a stud with an O-ring.
Stud with an O-ring has been adopted on our engines for some years in order to
prevent the water invasion into thread part even though the adoption time varied
slightly depending on the engine type.
However, even on the stud with an O-ring, we have recently experienced the same
trouble with the stud without an O-ring caused by the decreasing of sealing effect
due to deterioration of the O-ring under the long usage.
2. Inspection
We would like to recommend you to carry out the following inspection of all
tightening studs for cylinder cover by removing them at next overhauling of
cylinder cover.

1) Corrosion pit
Check the tightening stud overall by visual checking; precise attention should
be paid to the thread part.
Remove any corrosion pits with sand paper, if corrosion pit is observed.
2) Crack
Check the tightening stud overall by a dye-penetrate test; precise attention
should be paid to the thread part.
Replace the stud, if a crack is detected.
3. Countermeasure
Cylinder frame
Replace the O-ring of the tightening stud at every overhaul time of the
cylinder cover at least, and install the tightening stud onto cylinder frame
according to the procedure mentioned in item 2).

2) Installation of tightening stud for cylinder cover
Tighten the tightening stud until it touches the bottom end of the
thread on the cylinder frame.
Then, loosen the tightening stud by 45 - 60 degrees.
