Moment of a Couple (Part 1)

A couple is defined as two parallel forces that have the same magnitude,
but opposite directions, and are separated by a perpendicular distance d. Since
the resultant force is zero, the only effect of a couple is to produce an actual
rotation, or if no movement is possible, there is a tendency of rotation in a
specified direction. The moment produced by a couple is called a couple
moment.

Magnitude. The magnitude of the moment of a couple 𝑴𝑪 is

𝑴𝑪 = 𝑭𝒅

Where F is the magnitude of one of the forces and d is the perpendicular

distance or moment arm between the forces.
Example (1)

Determine the couple moment acting on the wheel, if 𝐹 = 75 𝑁.

Solution

we consider clockwise moment as positive, we have

𝑀𝐶 = 75(0.3) = 22.5 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 ↻ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Engineering Mechanics Moment of a Couple

Example (2)

Determine the couple moment acting on the beam.

Solution

The force is resolved into its x and y components. Considering clockwise

moments as positive, we have
3 4
↻ +𝑀𝐶 = −10 ( ) (2) + 10 ( ) (4) = 20 𝐾𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 ↻ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Example (3)

Determine the couple moment of each of three couples acting on the beam.

Solution

Couple (1), (F=300 N)

𝑀𝐶1 = 300(5) = 1500 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 ↻ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Couple (2), (F=400 N)

𝑀𝐶2 = 400(2) = 800 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 ↺ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Couple (3), (F=200 N)

𝑀𝐶3 = 200(0.2) = 40 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 ↻ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Engineering Mechanics Moment of a Couple

Example (4)

Determine the couple moment of each of two couples acting on the beam if F=
125 Ib.

Solution

Couple (1), (F=200 Ib)

𝑀𝐶1 = 200(1.5) = 300 𝐼𝑏 ∙ 𝑓𝑡 ↺ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Couple (2), (F=125 Ib)

𝑀𝐶2 = 125 cos 30 (1.25) = 135 𝐼𝑏 ∙ 𝑓𝑡 ↺ 𝐴𝑛𝑠.

Engineering Mechanics Moment of a Couple

Classwork
A twist of 4 N.m is applied to the handle of the screwdriver. Resolve this couple
moment into a pair of couple forces F exerted on the handle and P exerted on
the blade. Ans. (F = 133 N, P = 800 N)

Homework
Determine the couple moment of each of three couples acting on the triangular
plate.
