    6.1.2 Clutch Inspection and Measurement


    Reasons to inspect DT12 clutch:

    • Burnt smell coming from bell housing.


    • High counts of Clutch Warn in DDEC Reports.
    • High MIN (greater than 33mm) and MAX (greater than 51mm) Clutch Learn Values.
    • Low MIN (less than 20mm) and MAX (less than 38mm) Clutch Learn Values.
    • Oil leakage from bell housing vent.

    Inspect as follows:

    1. When clutch is being inspected, review the following examples to determine next step.

    • Example 1: Normal, continue with maintenance or diagnostics.


    • Example 2: Overheated clutch, determine cause of overheat (contamination, driver
    abuse).
    • Example 3: Warped pressure plate (possible low learn values).

    NOTE: Possible causes for overheated clutch are contamination or driver abuse.

    NOTE: Possible Example 3 caused are warped pressure plate, countershaft brake airline
    discolored or melted, and CPCA mounting plate paint bubbled.

    Clutch Measurement Instruction

    Show/Hide Checkboxes

    1. Keep the pressure plate and clutch disk installed on the engine.
    2. Lay a straightedge (1) on the raised portions on the pressure plate (2).
    3. Use a ruler to measure the distance (A) from the straightedge to the contact apex of
    each release finger.
    4. Is the measurement greater than 2.54 cm (1 in.) or the pressure plate fingers warped?
    1. Yes; replace the pressure plate, pressure plate mounting bolts and clutch disc.
    Refer to section "Installation of the Clutch" .
    2. No; clutch measurement meets specifications. Measurement procedure is
    finished.
