Concept Note and guidelines for the Assignment
Educational Studies
Internal Assessment will be based on developing a research paper on choice of any one area
syncing the major theme i.e. ‘Militarism in the Life-worlds of Children and Education’. It
is expected that you should discuss under any of the chosen area mentioned under section
‘sub-headings’ and develop a paper based on it. You may take help of primary/secondary
sources//your observation, concrete experience and views of the people relating to the issues
that you think to be matter of concern in order to develop your paper. You need to develop a
research paper in about 3000-6000 words.
Concept Note:
Major Theme: Militarism in the Life-worlds of Children and their Education
Militarism as an organized violence intersects childhoods in myriad ways. Some of which are
seen as a normal and/or natural response to educational problems while others are conspicuous
but attract little attention and critical reflection thereof. In circumstances, it ranges from the
abject child soldiers in fraught places to the comparatively privileged places of in-school
military training such as National Defence Academy (NDA) and in some of the community
controlled institutions where children are exposed and arm trained in the name of countering
different community/groups.
Existing literature suggests that often social marginalization correlates with particular forms of
the militarization of children’s lives which often makes them vulnerable in these circumstances.
Deeper insights are required on the acute vulnerability of children under such circumstance
which emanates either from conflict zones or the world beyond the conflict zone such as across
social class where determinant of susceptibility are reflective to military recruitment and more.
Some other studies examine how militarism circulates in popular and ‘elite’ culture, school,
curricula, leisure activities, and other facets of children’s lives- in places of margin and
privilege alike, in multiple ways, on the basis of margin or being privileged. Further, a growing
number of contributions across disciplines suggests that militarization is not something that
simply ‘happens to’ children. Under many circumstances it is also forced upon children.
Important conceptual developments in Critical Childhood Studies emphasizes as to ‘how
children engage with and through militarism as an always-present constituent of their
life-worlds’.
The present assignment endeavour you to approach children as meaningfully agency, taking
care to foreground their bonafide subjecthood, and tending to the ways they variously perceive,
internalize, reproduce, engage, assess, interpret, assimilate, subvert, and resist.
This work tries to provide you an opportunity to build from the insights unlocked by these
various currents, reflecting on childhood and militarism with particular attention to margin and
privilege. Specifically, this work is intends to capture ‘how margin and/or privilege are
navigated where childhood and militarism intersect’ and ‘how they bear on the form of those
intersections’. Also it tries to capture ‘how children’s lives are militarized’ and ‘how children’s
participation and childhood as an idea are all bound up in militarist ideation, performance,
and practice.’

I presume that childhoods are militarized in multiple ways, albeit in different, overlapping,
sometimes contradictory, and changeable ways with the action within or outside schools. Such
intersections can lead to understand how margin and privilege, manifest across specific or
multiple vectors.
You may also go in for comparative analyses of either a minority or majority context in the
sense how the lives and lifeworlds of marginalized children are differently militarized vis-à-vis
those of privileged children. Some of you might be interested in unfolding how things like
aspects of material culture (a militarized toy or game) or particular militarized social practices
and rituals might register differently between margin and privileged. Margin and privilege
themselves could also be approached along gender, or race, or other lines. I am open to other
ways of thinking about margin and privilege in getting at the multiplicity of lived childhoods
and of children’s actively engaged or are activated through contexts of militarism.
General guidelines:
Keeping the above mentioned concerns in mind, it is expected from you to develop and
generate a research paper (3000-6000 words) choosing any of the theme mentioned below that
suits you and you are comfortable with.

for those having studied from Hindi and Urdu mediums.
Those writing in Hindi or Urdu may submit in unicode or also handwritten assignment
Please Use ‘Times New Roman’ font, 12 pt. size for running text and 14 pt. for Headings,
Paper should be A4 (Portrait) and in MS-Word.
Manuscript should have all the margins (i.e. L/R/T/B) 1 inch (2.5 cm), Single spaces and
justified only.
Assignment should be based on original thoughts.
Give due citations wherever necessary. References should be given at the end of the
chapter in APA format.
