Learning Task 1-Group 1

HOW DOES GREEHOUSE EFFECT HAPPEN?
Analyze the given diagram below. Illustrate the greenhouse effect and
describe it in relation to global warming and climate change. You may
also refer to the concept bank for the proper labels of your illustration.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is the natural warming process of the Earth that
results when gases in the atmosphere trap heat from the earth that
would otherwise escape into space. Sunlight makes the earth habitable.
While 30 percent of the solar energy that reaches our world is reflected
back to space, approximately 70 percent passes through the
atmosphere to the earth’s surface, where it is absorbed by the land,
oceans, and atmosphere, and heats the planet. This heat is then
radiated back up in the form of invisible infrared radiation. While some of
this infrared radiation continues on into space, the vast majority—
indeed, some 90 percent—gets absorbed by atmospheric gases, known
as greenhouse gases, and redirected back toward the earth, causing
further warming.

The different greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous

oxide, and water vapor. These gases can be naturally occurring, or
man-made.

(AP Integration)
What was the Industrial Revolution?
. - A change in manufacturing methods from the Domestic System to
the Factory System during the 1760s
Causes of the Industrial Revolution
1. Renaissance
 Humanism - people seeking material comforts
2. Commercial Revolution:
 Mercantilism - caused by Colonialism and new markets
Learning Task 2-Group 2
Climate Change Basics
Answer the following questions below
Guide Questions:
1. Why is Earth getting warmer? People are adding heat-trapping
gases to the atmosphere, mainly by burning fossil fuels.
2. What are some results of Earth warming up? Earth’s climate is
changing, higher temperatures, more droughts, wilder weather,
melting glaciers, increased ocean acidity, warmer ocean, rising
sea level.
3. Why have we begun to see abnormally severe weather events
around the world, such as longer, harsher droughts in some
areas, and fiercer storms causing unusual flooding in other
areas? Warmer air causes more evaporation, causing more
droughts. Warmer air also causes the ocean to warm, causing
more evaporation from the ocean surface, creating stronger
storms and more tornados.
4. How do scientists know that Earth is warming and the climate is
changing? What do they do to discover the scientific evidence?
They examine historical records; collect measurements; and
observe trends in temperature, weather patterns, sea level, and
other features of the environment. They use satellites and other
instruments to measure the amount of greenhouse gases in the
air all around the world.

[Integrative Approach -Discussion Method]

Climate Change- is a long-term change in the average weather
patterns. It is incorporated with the two phenomena, the global warming
and large – scale change in weather patterns.

Effects
1. Warming Temperatures
2. Rising Sea Levels
3. Extreme Weather Events
4. Melting of Ice/Glaciers
5. Declining Biodiversity
6. Increase Public Health Risks

Learning Task 3-Group 3

Direction: Indicate which of the statements below shows actions of or
show for mitigation, adaptation or both. Fill up the Venn diagram only
with the numbers of the statements.

9 6
1
1. Using less energy by turning off the lights, television, or
computer, when you are not using them, conserving water and
recycling
2. Planting trees
3. Lessening solid waste and upgrading sewer systems
4. Switching to renewable sources of energy like solar, wind,
geothermal, or wave energy from the sea, instead of burning
coal, oil or gas
5. Using natural energy for lighting and to heat or cool building
6. Building weather-resistant infrastructure.
7. Building green roofs or roof gardens.
8. Using public transportation mor often, walking to nearby
destinations or using bicycles to work or school.
9. Buying local food and using less water.
10. Capturing landfill gases or making use of biogas as another
energy source

What Can We Do?

Responding to climate change involves two approaches:

Climate Mitigation-involves actions that reduce greenhouse gas

emissions or increase carbon sinks such as:
1. Using less energy, conserving and recycling.
2. Switching to renewable sources of energy
3. Using public transportation mor often, walking or using bicycles
to work or school.

Climate Adaptation-involves adjustments in natural or human systems

to reduce their vulnerabilities to the impacts of climate change and
climate-related risks such as:
1. Developing emergency alert systems
2. Lessening solid waste and upgrading sewer
3. Providing public cooling centers
4. Building weather-resistant infrastructure.

How can youth like you help mitigate the impacts of climate change?
1. Waste management – through YES-O start #Tumbler Challenge
2. Urban Gardening – empower the youth as food producers and
assist in attaining food security.
3. Promoting Renewable Energy – start using solar power gadgets
What’s more?
Performance Task
Carbon Footprint: Learn about carbon footprint using carbon footprint
E. Engagement
calculator (https://coolclimate.org/calculator). Present this in class and
teach others how to use it. Plan how to reduce your carbon footprint.

D. Assimilation What I have learned?

Direction: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write your answer in
your science notebook.
1. It occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants collect in
the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have
bounced off the earth’s surface.
a. climate change
b. temperature
c. weather
2. What is the primary cause of the overall rising trend in CO2 in the
atmosphere?
a. As human population grows, people exhale more CO2
b. The increase in CO2 is caused by burning of fossil fuels
c. CO2 is increasing because we are coming out of an ice age
3. How are humans making greenhouse gases of our own?
a. burning fossil fuels in our cars
b. burning forests
c. with large-scale agriculture
d. all of these
4. Which is the strongest evidence for climate change?
a. A colder-than-average winter
b. A warmer-than-average summer
c. A pattern of increasing frequency and intensity of storms over
many years
5. Which of the following contributes least to your carbon footprint?
a. riding a bike to college
b. driving a car to the shops
c. taking a plane

What I Can Do? (Values Integration)

Words to Live By…
"Mitigation helps us avoid the unmanageable, while adaptation helps
us manage the unavoidable."
The learners, in their notebook, journal or portfolio will write their
personal insights about the lesson by completing the statements below.
