LESSON 2:

Society (Common
Good)
Introduction
The active participation in the liturgy is our expression of belief and faith. We belong to a Church where there are
different celebrations that we should be aware of. Not just a simple awareness but we must fully understand the meaning
of it. In the previous lessons we were able to learn the concepts of prayers, then it might easy for us to see and personally
experience the value and worth of our faith and prayers in the liturgy.
In the latter part of the lesson, you will understand clearly the value of liturgy in a life of a believer of Christ
where you can appreciate the presence of Christ in all liturgical celebrations especially in the Holy Mass. You will also
understand and recognize the importance of the common good based on the Catholic teaching. Furthermore, as a believer
you will appreciate the value of prayer because this is one of our purpose and end to be rooted and grounded to become a
virtuous person.
Grade Level Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of concepts about society and Christian human work as a calling from
God and take actions for the right course or occupation that is meaningful and significant for integral human formation
and social transformation.

EXPLORE
My dear student, before starting today’s lesson, I want you to find a quiet place in your house where you can
pray and meditate for a few minutes. Use the prayer below for your opening prayer and meditation.
Afterwards kindly listen to the song “Blessings” by Laura Story and pick a word or phrase that struck or moved
you from the given song. Out of that word or phrase you can type your reflection and meditation in the Explore
Activity folder in our Schoology class.
Are you done with the reflection activity? If you are done, then can you proceed to the firm up part of this
module. Please read and understand the transition statement below.
FIRM UP
God is present and active in all human experience. Our life and existence are “Blessings”. We already have a
blessed life and through worship and prayer are our ways of recognising and celebrating this reality in the Christian
tradition. God is reached through the world and adored within it. Making sacred spaces for worship and adoration is to
create a space where the unity of God and creation is reverently symbolized and celebrated. Worship and prayer unite
us more closely to Him.
Worship remembers and celebrates the marvellous things God works in our lives. It celebrates God’s presence in
our lives. Worship should not feel like an interruption from a different world. It is a response to life and can be
spontaneous.
Prayer and liturgy are concerned with giving glory, honour, praise, and thanks to God. It is our loving response,
in word and action, to God’s invitation to enter into relationship made possible through the work of Jesus Christ and
the strength of the Holy Spirit. All liturgies involve the praise, thanksgiving, and adoration of God therefore it is an act
of worship. However not all worship will be liturgy as it may or may not include symbols and action. https://www.st-
clares.lancs.sch.uk/cms/resources/prayer-and-liturgy-policy.pdf .
All believers of Christ who participate wholeheartedly in the liturgy find the source and goal of their prayers.
The great love of the Father through Jesus Christ His Son, is encountered and can be experienced in the liturgy and
one’s prayers are internalized through the Holy Spirit.
The Liturgy is actually the fountain of our prayer. As Christian we should be aware that we should pray together
#WeCAREasOneIHMA
with Him as a Church since the presence of Christ is always present in all liturgical celebration especially during Holy
Mass or Eucharistic Celebration.
To broaden your concepts about Prayer and Liturgy, kindly read with comprehension pages 30 – 34 of your
textbook. Afterwards answer the set of questions below for your self-assessment. This is the stage where you can
practice and evaluate your learnings about the lesson. Try to identify the correct answer in the given statements. Write
your answer in a one whole sheet of paper. God bless and Good luck!

Let’s deepen your knowledge!
Kindly read and study the additional discussion below, this will help you understand the value of common good based on
Catholic teachings.
CARITAS MANILA
Caritas Manila is the lead Catholic agency for social services and development in the Archdiocese of Manila. It
was founded in October 1953 by the late Archbishop of Manila, Ruffino J. Cardinal Santos. Its programs and services are
directed towards the total human development of marginalized people and the promotion of social justice in the light of
the Church’s Catholic social teachings. It directly serves the 13 vicariates of the Archdiocese and provides technical
assistance to parish social services and development ministries. It acts too as catalyst for the capacity-building and
networking for five other Metro Manila dioceses.
The name Caritas means charity or authentic love. Caritas manila is part of the worldwide Caritas Internationalis
of the Catholic Church. Caritas Manila has different programs and services which aim to concretize the love of God
among 52 percent of Metro manila’s population who are poor. They are also called the “least, last, and lost.” It has 3
major missions: to empower the poor towards total human development, to build caring and sharing communities among
the youth and families, and to enable the growth and development of servant leadership.
Caritas Manila’s core programs are geared towards the integral human development and the spiritual and socio-
economic development of the poor. It has always believed that meaningful assistance must be an empowering process.
Most of its programs are designed to transform people from poverty and dependence to productive self-reliance with
dignity. The various Social Development Programs are:
1. The Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP). This is Caritas Manila’s re-engineered
scholarship program. Through YSLEP, it aims to shape servant leaders out of our young scholars by helping them
build their self-leadership, moral integrity, and social responsibility.
2. Health Care. Caritas Manila partnered with major foundations and government institutions in promoting good
health through preventive and primary health care programs.
3. Caritas Margins. These are products that are 100% made by urban poor individuals and families that Caritas
Manila is helping through its caritas skills livelihood training program. It provided over 20,000 individuals form
different parishes with skills training on food processing, commercial, and cooking, carpentry, massage therapy,
cosmetology, fashion accessories, herbal soap and ointment and homecare products.
4. Disaster Risk Reduction. This is to capacitate and increase the resilience of the community against disasters and
contingencies. They may be in the form of natural hazards such as typhoons, earthquakes, and landslides. These
contingencies may also be man-made hazards such as armed conflicts and fires.

5. Restorative Justice. This is a special ministry of the Church through Caritas in the development of the
correctional community based on the principles of Restorative Justice. It provides training and formation sessions,
conducts recollections, and spiritual formations, etc.
6. Housing and Community Building. Caritas lends a hand in easing the acrimonious relocation of displaced
families, acting as mediator in behalf of communities facing eviction and demolition, and helping provide them
with shelter. Caritas, likewise, assist communities and organizations in an advisory capacity.
7. Advocacy and Social Concerns. Caritas manila promotes love and social justice by education and creating mass
awareness on important issues that affects the community. Our information campaigns are intended to instil a
sense of responsibility and involvement to guarantee a more active and caring Christian community.
PLEASE REMEMBER!
The virtue of charity is the summit of the Christian life and the beginning of everlasting happiness. Aside from
Caritas manila, there are other agencies and organizations that have the mission of spreading the love of God through
charitable works. The Principle behind these charitable groups is not the answer to the question “How can we be happy/”
but instead, “How can we make others happy?” It simply means that the ultimate means to happiness is to focus not on
your happiness, but the happiness of others.
With this, charity is best expressed in the value of selflessness. Selflessness is the act of sacrificing one’s own
interest for the good of others. Selflessness means we act without thinking how we will profit or be rewarded. If we give
help to others, but expect recognition or the favour to be returned, this is not selflessness action. True selflessness means
we would do the action, even if it was never known to anyone else. Selflessness means we identify with others and our
action is motivated by a feeling of oneness. We help others because we identify with their problems and their suffering.
