Appreciation of the poem (whatever is underlined in the appreciation should be underlined while writing in your notebook too) The poem Past, Present, Future composed by Emily Bronte is a dialogue between poetess and a happy child, where the child is comparing his life to 3 seasons namely Autumn, Spring and Summer. The rhyme scheme of the poem is abab. There are many figures of speech in the poem such as Repetition, Interrogation, Metaphor and Personification. But the figure of speech that appeals to me is Personification in the line, ‘A mighty, glorious, dazzling sea stretching into infinity.’ Here, a sea is given the human quality of being mighty, glorious and dazzling. The central idea of the poem is about time and different stages of life compared to different seasons. According to the child the past was a pleasant time which has ended and cannot be revisited again. He has compared his past life to Autumn season. The present is a time full of life in which we can gather strength. It is the time to gain new experiences and explore the world. He has compared his present life to Spring season. The future is an exciting, thrilling time which has no end. It is that time of the life which is limitless with endless opportunities. He has compared his future life to Summer season. EXTRA QUESTIONS (students are expected to write their own answers after careful listening of the audio presentation.A personal response is welcome.) 1) Why is the child comparing his present time to the young bird? 2) Why do you think the Autumn is compared to his past time? 3) Why does the child want his future to be like a sea? 4) Which time of your life do you like the most? Justify your answer.
