There is so much to learn from the Mahatma that a lifetime is short to correct our ways and
follow his ideals. However, I believe that his humility and kindness are the first of his principles
that we should learn. For kind women and men build kind societies.
I was 12 years old when I first learnt about Mahatma Gandhi's humanitarian approach. He
teaches us that big changes lie in small first steps and that to work on oneself and become a
better person is to set the first brick of an ideal society.
It is thanks to his teachings that I now try to be more conscious about the little mistakes I
make such as being angry when I can be communicative; being lazy when I can be productive;
and being afraid and doubtful when I can focus on the present moment instead. Gandhi has
taught us, who we are and who we can be is a matter of choice.
More than 150 years after his birth, we are yet to inculcate his teachings into our individual
and national conscience. It is time we take the first step, so that others follow. After all, leading
