FORM USE

Regular verbs form the Past Simple


adding –ed to the infinitive. We use the Past Simple to talk about
Talk  talked actions which happened at some point in
Past Simple the past or during a certain period in the
past. It occurs with: ago, yesterday, last
Verbs ending in a consonant + -y and
add –ied. week / month / year.
Cry  cried
Affirmative: I saw Santa Claus.
Irregular verbs have different forms Interrogative: Did you see Santa Claus?
Give  gave do  did Negative: I didn't see Santa Claus.

A year ago, John celebrated Christmas as usual. He told you what


happened. Complete his description to find out what’s tradition in Britain
at Christmas.

Last Christmas they ________ (not/put) their shoes near the chimney, as
Portuguese people usually _________ (do) they ________ (hang) stockings to
receive Santa Claus´ presents at the foot of their bed as usual.
For Christmas lunch they _______ (have) roast turkey and hot Christmas pudding
with very cold brandy-butter. In Portugal people _______ (have) cod fish and
potatoes and vegetables.
In Britain, people usually ________ (give) surprise presents. Last Christmas they
