An Overview of the Role of Primary Care Nurse, Critical Care Nurse, and
Preceptor
The Primary Care Nurse is pivotal in providing holistic and compassionate care to patients
in acute and community healthcare settings. They are responsible for conducting health
assessments, managing chronic conditions, and promoting preventive care. Primary Care
Nurses serve as the first point of contact for patients, coordinating their care and ensuring
continuity in treatment plans. They develop personalized care plans, administer
medications, and monitor patients' progress, aiming to optimize health outcomes and
5
improve the overall well-being of individuals.
Critical Care Nurses are specialized healthcare professionals who provide intensive and
specialized care to critically ill patients in settings like intensive care units (ICUs) or
emergency departments. Their role involves closely monitoring patients' vital signs,
administering medications, and operating life-saving medical equipment such as
ventilators. Critical Care Nurses are trained to respond rapidly to emergencies, stabilize
patients, and provide emergency resuscitative care. They ensure the best possible
outcomes for critically ill patients, who often require constant monitoring and complex
interventions.
Nurses consistently rank among America's most trusted professions, and for a good
reason — whether you're in for a routine check-up or an emergency hospitalization,
nurses consistently provide compassionate care while advocating for patients and
providing leadership within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. 1 Yet, despite nurses'
crucial role, the challenges posed by today's unique healthcare environment have resulted
in a nursing shortage — and solving the problem is easier said than done.
The healthcare system in the USA may experience shortages of nurses and healthcare
workers, particularly in critical care units and underserved areas. These shortages can
result in increased workloads for existing professionals, compromising the quality of
patient care and putting a strain on the healthcare workforce. For years, experts in the
healthcare field have sounded the alarm on the high demand for nurses nationwide. Based
on projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the country will need an
additional 203,200 registered nurses (RNs) annually through 2031. 2 Now the second-
largest generation after millennials, baby boomers comprise a sizable portion of the
population. They also account for the growing demand for healthcare services — about
half of U.S. seniors have three or more chronic conditions. 3
An industry-wide survey found that the average age for a registered nurse is 52 years old,
which may signal a large retirement wave over the next 15 years — making it critical that
nursing schools produce enough new graduates to not only fill new positions but also to

replace those moving into retirement.4
The Value of Experienced Nurses for the Healthcare
At a broad level, my endeavor creates considerable value for healthcare. In particular, my
endeavor meets the current healthcare needs in the USA.
Nurses are crucial in the US healthcare system, serving as the backbone of patient care and
contributing significantly to healthcare services' overall quality and efficiency. Nurses are
at the forefront of patient care, providing round-the-clock monitoring, administering
medications, conducting health assessments, and implementing care plans. Their vigilance
and attention to detail help to prevent medical errors and ensure patient safety. Studies
have shown that a higher nurse-to-patient ratio is associated with lower mortality rates
and fewer adverse events.
Nurses, especially Primary Care Nurses, are vital in improving healthcare access for
underserved populations and rural communities. They provide essential primary care
services, health education, and preventive interventions, bridging the gap in healthcare
access for vulnerable populations. Evidence suggests that nursing interventions and care
coordination by nurses can lead to cost savings in the healthcare system. For instance,
nursing-led chronic disease management programs have been shown to reduce hospital
readmissions and healthcare expenditures.
The USA has been experiencing a nursing shortage, and nurses are critical in addressing
this challenge. They help alleviate the burden on healthcare facilities by providing skilled
care and supporting patient outcomes. Nurses are actively involved in research and the
implementation of evidence-based practices. Their contributions to nursing research
improve patient care and outcomes and drive advancements in healthcare.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of May 2020, approximately 3.1
million registered nurses were employed in the USA, making nursing the most significant
healthcare occupation. The BLS also projects faster-than-average job growth of 7% for
registered nurses from 2019 to 2029, emphasizing the increasing demand for nursing
services. Moreover, a study published in the Journal of Nursing Regulation estimated that
by 2025, the USA may experience a shortage of approximately 510,394 registered nurses
due to aging baby boomers, increasing chronic health conditions, and an aging nursing
workforce.
As a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Critical Care Nurse, and Preceptor, I aim to address
several pressing issues within the US healthcare system. With the projected nursing
shortage, my role as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and Critical Care Nurse will help
bridge the gap in the healthcare workforce, providing skilled care to patients and
supporting positive outcomes. By working in underserved areas and rural communities, I

will improve access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, ensuring they receive
essential primary care services and health education.
My experience as a Critical Care Nurse in critical care settings will enable me to closely
monitor patients, administer emergency resuscitative care, and respond rapidly to
medical emergencies. I can improve patient outcomes and reduce medical errors by
prioritizing patient safety and delivering timely interventions. Furthermore, as a
Preceptor, I will mentor and educate new healthcare professionals, nurturing their skills
and contributing to a competent and skilled healthcare workforce.
Focusing on patient-centered care, I will prioritize patient preferences and needs,
ensuring they actively participate in their treatment plans and decision-making. I aim to
enhance patient satisfaction and healthcare experiences by advocating for patient rights
and delivering comprehensive care. Through these combined efforts, my endeavor as a
Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Critical Care Nurse, and Preceptor will contribute to
solving some of the significant challenges faced by the US healthcare system. By providing
high-quality care, supporting workforce development, and promoting public health, I
aspire to make a meaningful and positive impact on the healthcare landscape in the
country.
The national importance of an Experienced Nurse for the United States
Nurses make up the backbone of the U.S. healthcare industry. As patient advocates and
skilled care providers, nurses have never been more critical in meeting the healthcare
needs of a growing number of patients. The approximately 3 million nurses working today
comprise the backbone of the U.S. healthcare industry and are the largest single
profession.5 However, with an increasing population of patients in need of more care than
ever before, there is still a nursing shortfall that must be overcome. Consistently ranked
the most trusted profession in America year after year, nurses play an increasingly
significant role in providing care and the administrative side of healthcare.
Experienced nurses hold immense national importance for the United States across
various aspects of the healthcare system. Their expertise, dedication, and contributions
are invaluable in shaping the nation's healthcare landscape. As the USA faces healthcare
challenges such as the aging population, chronic disease management, and the nursing
shortage, experienced nurses serve as a crucial resource. Their ability to manage diverse
patient populations and handle complex healthcare needs helps address these challenges
effectively.
Experienced nurses are pivotal in mentoring and guiding new nurses, ensuring their
smooth transition. By sharing their wisdom and experiences, they support the growth and
development of the nursing workforce, promoting a competent and skilled cadre of
healthcare professionals. Experienced nurses are essential pillars of the USA's healthcare
