7.2(a) Single Row Chain Type Lap Riveted Joint

Riveting (Terms) Calculations

For t=16mm

Diameter of Hole or Shank of finished rivet= D D=6*√ =6*√16 =6*4=24mm

Pitch=3*D=3*24=72mm
Thickness of plates to be riveted= t Margin=1.5*D=1.5*24=36mm

Then, TOP VIEW

D=6*√ ,where D and t are in (mm)

Pitch(P)=3D
Margin(M)=1.5D
Back/Transverse Pitch(Pb)= 2D+6 (Chain Type)
= 2D (Zig-Zag Type)

72
Thickness of cover plates(t1)=1.125t (For Single Strap)
=0.625t (For Double Strap)
Note:- Straps are only used in Butt Joints not in Lap Joints.
Single row of rivets are not of zig-zag type. That is rivet joint
having more than one row of rivets can be of zig-zag type also.

72
A Simple Drawing of a Snap Head Rivet

For example, A A

R=0.75D
If thickness of plates to be riveted, t = 16 mm C=D/8

Then,
D
Diameter of Hole or shank of finished rivet,D =6*√ = 24 mm
Radius of snap head (finished) rivet, R = 0.75D = 18 mm
Center of radius of head lies, C = D/8 = 3 mm below the 10°

RIVETED JOINTS
 Diameter of shank of Rivet (d) = 6 t
where t = thickness of plate being connected in mm
 The diameter (d) obtained is rounded to the nearest
standard size of rivets.
 The standard sizes in mm as per BIS are: 12, 14, 16,
18, 20, 22, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 42, 48
 Pitch (p) = 3d where pitch is the distance between
axes of adjoining rivets in same row measured
parallel to edges of plates.
RIVETED JOINTS
 Row Pitch (pr) is the distance between two rows.
Row pitch is (2d) mm in zigzag type and (2d+6) mm
in chain type.
 Diagonal pitch (pd) is the distance between axis of
nearest rivets in the adjoining rows. Its value is
7d/3.
 Thickness of cover plates for Butt Joints:

 Thickness of cover plate when only one cover plate

is used, tc1 = 1.125t
 Thickness of each cover plate when two cover plates
are used, tc2 = 0.8t

ASSIGNMENT 4
Q1. Draw sectional front view and top view of a single-riveted
lap joint for 10 mm thick plates.
Q2. Draw sectional front view and top view of a double-riveted
lap joint (i) the chain, and (ii) the zigzag formation for 10
mm thick plates.
Q3. Draw sectional front view and top view of a single-riveted
single cover plate type and double cover plate type butt
joints for connecting 10 mm thick plates.
Q4. Draw top view and sectional front view of a single-riveted
double cover butt joint. Take diameter of the rivet = 24 mm.
Q5. Draw sectional front view and top view of a double-riveted
double strap butt joint (chain type). Take thickness of main
plates = 8mm, cover plates = 5 mm, diameter of rivet = 12
mm, and pitch = 36 mm.
Q6. Sketch various types of welding joints along with their
symbol.
