Sources of Energy

Oxygen, Sulphur & Phosphorus

Trace elements
Sources of Energy:-
Microorganisms may be grouped on the basis of energy source.

• Two sources of energy are available to microorganisms:-

1. Chemotrophs:-
Microbes that oxidised chemical compounds (either organic or inorganic) for energy.
2. Phototrophs:-
• Microbes that use light as energy source.
Oxygen
• Oxygen is macronutrient which is required in large quantities.
• Oxygen is produced by plants, algae and cyanobacteria during photosynthesis.
• Oxygen is required for aerobic respiration and energy production.

• Microorganisms are classified on the basis of their oxygen requirements:-

1) Obligate aerobes
2) Facultative anaerobes
3) Obligate anaerobes

• Oxygen is used by microorganisms in different forms.

Sulphur:-

• Sulphur is macronutrient which is required in large amounts by microorganisms.

• Sulphur is essential for all microorganisms.
• It is taken up as sulphate from soil (or seawater) by plants and algae.
• Microorganisms are capable of metabolizing sulphur and plays an important role in
sulphur cycle.
• Microorganisms can conserve energy (produces ATP) from the oxidation of sulphur.
• Microorganisms (bacteria) use sulphur as energy source in the form of hydrogen
sulphide and thiosulphate.
Phosphorus:-
• Phosphorus is essential nutrients for all life forms.
• It is essential for the synthesis of nucleic acids and phospholipids of cell membrane.
• It is part of ATP.

• Microbes can gain energy by converting phosphite to phosphate.

• It plays an important role in energy transduction , signal transmission and Redox
catalysis.
Trace Elements:-

• Trace elements are required in trace or minute quantities by microorganisms.

• Zinc is cofactor for DNA polymerase and Alcoholic dehydrogenase.
• Manganese is cofactor for superoxide dismutase.
• Molybdenum is required for nitrogen fixation and cofactor Nitrogenase and
Nitrate reductase.
• Cobalt is main component of vitamin B12.
