Spaces in Safad Building, University of San Carlos, Talamban that conform to the principles of
tropical architecture
Space
Safad Lobby Atrium
Function / Use
This space is open and accessible space to all floors of safad building on the entrance wing. It is
used as a lobby area for the ground floor and an enclosed balcony area for the higher floors.
Application of Tropical Application
This design incorporates a high ceiling to create an open environment in what would otherwise
be a closed space. It acts as an entry point for prevailing breezes that circulate through the
various levels of the Safad structure. Hot air naturally rises as cool winds enter the structure
from below through the atrium. To allow this heated air to escape, the architects inserted
ventilation devices into the construction, such as louvers beneath the roof and jalousie
windows along the classroom's sides. This architectural method makes use of the wind
buoyancy principle, successfully employing natural airflow as a free ventilation system for the
benefit of academics, staff, and students. As a result, this design decreases the need for
artificial ventilation systems like as air conditioning, which is especially important in hot
climates.
This space also utilize natural lighting device. Instead of making it an open space, since it rains
there is a need to cover it, so to use the light of the sun, the use of transparent roofing
materials or polycarbonate roofing reflects the light of the sun during the day. Although this
design might have thermal issues since it is a high ceiling and a very open area, the heat is
mitigated by the constant prevailing winds passing throught the building.
Space
Hallways of the West wing of Safad, the Laboratory classrooms
Function / Use
This area serves as a hallway and open classrooms
Application of Tropical Application
This area utilizes natural light and wind devices by creating a very open space. By applying a
mezzanine type floor area on the upper levels, it opens up the space for the cool ground winds
to pass through the area and rise up to the upper floor levels. The open walls as well on the left
side of the picture promotes the wind to pass through different rooms areas as well. Similar to
the design concept of the Safad atrium, the utilization of polycarbonate roofing materials are to
open up the space more the natural light. With large open space on the highest level of the
area serves as an outlet for hot winds to pass through the area in order to successfully promote
natural wind buoyancy. Since this space has a large area compared to the atrium, the thermal
conditions of the space needed to be mitigated therefore, the use of small strips with the
combination of transparent and non-transparent windows are to balance the heat exposure to
the space.
Spaces in Safad Building, University of San Carlos, Talamban that needs improvement with the
application of tropical architecture
Space
Hallway roof from the basement canteen and Floor of design classrooms on the West wing of
Safad
Function / Use
This are stained glass incorporated on concrete floor slabs
Application of Tropical Application
This is intended to use as an architectural tool to reflect the stained light from the glass to
reflect its respective colors utilizing the natural light from the west wing roof on the highest
peak of the sun.
Recommendation
Due to experience these stained glass does not reflect its stained light since the flare of the
natural light from the roof of the west wing is not strong enough or direct enough to reflect the
light on the glass. The function and purpose of this design feature was not utilized on its
maximum ability making it sort of useless.
I recommend to apply this concept where the sun will directly hit the material to reflect the
stained light and to use its purpose.
Space
Hallway roof from the basement canteen and Floor of design classrooms on the West wing of
Function / Use
This is to channel the cool prevailing wind from the upper floor to the basement
Application of Tropical Application
This is intended to function as an architectural tool the channel the wind from the upper floor
to the basement.
Recommendation
I recommend that this is to be located on the upper side of the sloped area and/or an area far
from open area so that the water accumulated by the rain would not channel on the basement
area. Aside from its intention, this area serves as one of the problems of the building that
contributed to flooding and discomfort.
