    Carinosa

    - is a dance from the Philippines;


    - in English literally means ‘Loving or affectionate one’.
    - this ‘romantic’ Philippines dance originated in the Panay
    island in the colonial-era from the Maria Clara suite of
    Philippine folk dances and is supposed to be heavily
    influenced by Hispanic culture.
    - a fan or a handkerchief plays an important role in this
    dance form.
    History and origin of the Carinosa Dance
    It was during the 15th century that the Philippines was
    colonized for the first time by the Spanish. It was during this
    period that the Spanish people introduced this dance style
    to the ‘Filipino’ culture. Carinosa is one of the popular folk
    dances in the Philippines.
    Costumes used in the Carinosa Dance
    Female dancers - adorn the Maria Clara gown/dress
    - patadyong kimona (a dress belonging to
    the Visayan community)
    Male dancers - wear the Barong Tagalong. A traditional
    embroidered long-sleeve shirt
    - camisa de chino (a white sleeve)
    Music
    It is in ¾ in rhythm like some of the Spanish dances. The
    Philippine Rondalla are playing this music of the dance where
    it is an ensemble or an orchestra of string instruments in the
    Philippines similar to the Spanish musicians in Spain that
    comprises Bandurria, Mandolin, Guitar, Bass, Drum and
    Banjo. Mostly men are playing rondalla instruments but
    women may also take part

    Step turn and bow facing each other:

    3 steps and point right-left direction in 16 counts.
    Figure 3:
    Touch step – 3 forward in 2 counts. 4 touch steps, change
    position then repeat
    Figure 4:
    - 3 step forward and back to back
    - 4 touch steps
    - change positions and repeat the 1st two of figure 4:
    Figure 5:
    - 3 step forward
    - Girl opens her fan and will start fanning herself
    - 4 touch steps
    - change position and repeat the first three of figure 5
    Figure 6:
    - 3 step forward
    - boys moves forward then kneel
    - girl taps the boy with her fan and she will do 4 touch steps
    - change position
    - girl will kneel as they look at each other abd the boy will do
    4 touch steps
    Figure 7:
    - 3 step forward
    - girl gets the handkerchief from the boy
    - both will move the hanky up and down four times
    - change position then repeat the 1st three steps of figure 7
    Figure 8:
    - dance with grace
