    Principle
    The active sand filter is based on the countercurrent principle. The raw water flows into the inlet pipe and
    enters the filter through the water distributor at the bottom of the filter. The water flows upstream through
    the filter bed, and the treated water gathers at the top of the filter and flows out through the overflow port.
    The contaminated filter media, which is at the bottom of the filter, is lifted through the air lift pump to the
    sand washer at the top of the filter. The sand cleaning has already started in the pump delivery process.
    The pollutant is separated from the active sand by turbulent action. Dirty sand from the pump outlet
    overflow into the bellows, and then is discharged. Clean sand flow back to the sand bed by gravity.As a
    result, the sand bed is continuously sinking slowly in the equipment. The power source is compressed air
    provided by the air compressor. The water purification and sand cleaning are carried out simultaneously.

    Conventional Process Flow


    The active sand filter can be used to produce reused water by direct-contact filtration of surface water
    and ground water so that the coagulation tank in the three-stage conventional treatment process could be
    eliminated. In the conventional secondary biochemical treatment, the active sand filter can be directly installed
    after secondary sedimentation tank as advanced treatment. There is no need to build any other treatment
    facilities, such as coagulation tank, purification tank, etc. The coagulant dosing can be realized directly in the
    inlet pipeline or channel and the mixing process can be achieved by using pipeline mixer or in mechanical-
    mixing tank. The cyclic motion of filter media can play a role of mixing as well. Compared with the three-
    stage conventional filtration process, the active sand filter process can significantly reduce the quantity of
    work, investment and the cost of operation and maintenance, thus avoid the defects of three-stage treatment,
    such as more treatment facilities required, more complicated treatment and higher investment and operation fee.
