Comparison

A significant similarity lies in the fact that the majority of grandparents in

both countries were part of relatively large families. Additionally, the
parents and grandparents from both countries typically spent their leisure
time engaged in outdoor activities. The notable distinction is that Dutch
grandparents and parents received pocket money, while this practice was
quite uncommon in India.

Moreover, the early emphasis on academics in the Netherlands compared

to India highlights differing educational priorities and societal expectations
based on youth. This contrast may stem from distinct educational systems
and other socio-economic factors.

As for the current generation, the youth of both countries spend the
majority of their spare time on social media. This shows the similarities of
the hobbies of teenagers in both countries. However, internet consumption
is likely higher in the Netherlands as the students have their phones with
them more often than Indian teenagers. Dutch teenagers also have
comparable amounts of spare time as Indian teenagers.

In essence, the way spare time is utilized by teenagers and also, the
amount of spare time that teenagers have has evolved quite similarly.

Reflections

Avneesh- I was the group leader, so I managed the team’s work and
allotted tasks, like selecting the interviewers and interviewees. I also
communicated with my team about deadlines, meetings, and important
information about the trip. I let my team members do work independently
but gave them timely reminders on when to get their work done.
My most memorable experience was going to the Anne Frank house and
learning about the history we never learned in school. Visiting the house
reminded me to be more aware and curious of my past and to think about
my future.
According to me the interviews and communication went really well, not
only with the Dutch students, but my teammates too. I was very satisfied
with the friendships I made and the work my team did. The only thing I
would change about this experience would be to be in touch with more of
the Dutch students.

Zenee- All of us split the work equally. I did 3 of the 9 interviews for the 3
generations of my family, and I compiled and designed the reports with
some help from my peers. I was able to communicate well with the rest of
the group members to put our work together.
My most memorable experience was working with the Dutch students on
creative activities such as screen printing on tote bags and making portraits
of each other. I especially loved learning about how different their culture
and habits were from ours.
I think the communication with the Dutch students went well, since we
became really good friends with them. The group work was also really fun
and efficient since I got to work with dedicated students. If I could change
one thing, it would be to ask more questions in all my interviews, so that I
could get more insight into the past of my family.

Vidhushi- As a participant in the "Spare Time" group, my responsibility

encompassed conducting interviews and managing the associated tasks.
Effective communication was crucial, involving both asking and responding
to my peers' inquiries. Additionally, I curated several interviews and crafted
a three-minute video, capturing highlights from each interview.
Among my most cherished experiences was the opportunity to connect with
Dutch students. This engagement provided valuable insights into their
culture and habits, forming lasting connections and core memories. Staying
up late with group members to complete our summaries remains an
unforgettable moment, highlighting the unexpectedly enjoyable nature of
collaborative project work.
On a personal note, the interviews with grandparents, parents, and
teenagers proved highly successful. However, I recognized a language
barrier as a minor challenge, acknowledging that views expressed in a
particular language may only fully resonate when understood, potentially
losing nuance in translation. Furthermore, I express a desire for more time
spent with the Dutch students, lamenting our need to part ways just as our
bonds strengthened. Overall, I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and
collaborate with the Dutch students, recognizing our group as the first from
our school to visit them in person.

Tanishqa- The group I am a part of has received the topic of spare time.
Our tasks were to find out the similarities and differences between three
generations on how they spent their spare time. My contribution was writing
the texts and helping with communication.
The most memorable experience for me was when I visited the other
school and learned how different and unique their culture was. I was most
fascinated by their daily life as it was a complete contrast from mine. I was
able to understand more about their culture and how it was special to them.
As I mentioned, the best part of this excellent learning experience was to
make wonderful friendships that would last a lifetime. The response of the
other students was very welcoming, making this a once in a lifetime
moment. On an honest note I would not have done anything differently as I
was part of an amazing group.
Jash- As the website in charge of the ‘Spare Time’ group, my
responsibilities included, conducting interviews, editing our introductory
video, crafting the Evidence Of Communication, proofreading all our
documentation, adding pictures to it and, uploading and controlling our
website. Additionally, I facilitated communication between our teachers and
our members by relaying our members’ doubts and gaining clarity on our
work to effectively brief all our group members about their tasks.
Furthermore, I also ensured that all our members were working in
accordance with the deadlines given to us.
The experience that taught me the most was exploring the renowned Rijks
Museum along with our Dutch correspondents. The enchanting museum
had several displays that educated me about Dutch history, culture, and
art. Our Dutch friends from our partner school also provided valuable
insights that have completely altered my perspective on the displays at the
museum. As for the competencies I developed further, this cultural
exchange improved my communication and analytical skills the most.
Moreover, I can confidently say that this cultural exchange broadened my
worldview.
Overall, everything went quite smoothly, especially our invaluable time with
the students of our partner school. Another area where our group did well
was internal communication as all members communicated very effectively.
However, in my opinion, it would’ve been better if the interviews our group
conducted had better audio quality. I also would’ve loved to have spent
more time with the Dutch students as that would’ve allowed me to learn
even more about them and their lives.
