Living Things Lesson Plan
Lesson Idea
☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.
☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.
☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.
different things of them. For example, the students will answer questions on Padlet, watch a
video about living things, give their own opinions, and play a Kahoot. If the students need any
help, I will be there to guide them and make sure that everyone stays on task. To activate
prior knowledge, the students and I will have a quick discussion about things we can’t live
without. By this time, we will also have done the seed with a paper towel experiment where
the students can see that it changes as the days go by and write down their observations. To
access the students, I will check the Kahoot answers and read the Padlet responses. Finally,
to conclude this lesson I will refer to the seed experiment and we can discuss what the needs
are for the seed to be able to grow.
Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
The tools that I used in my lesson allow student learning to shift from passive to active
through the activation through prior knowledge to having a chance to demonstrate that they
understand the information being given to them at the end of the lesson when they get to
make their own chart of living and non-living things. On the other hand, I will allow time-on-
task by setting a timer on the Smart Board and giving constant reminders such as five minutes
left, two minutes left, and allow for a couple extra minutes to finish any last thoughts. I will
also then set another time after so that the students can reply to other posts on the Padlet.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This lesson that I created supports the UDL framework through engagement because my
students love working with technology. My students enjoy exploring on the computers and I
feel as though the engagement helps them to retain the information. The use of Padlet,
Kahoot, and YouTube is also engaging for my students because they get to get the
information through multiple sites rather than being stuck on one page.
