Over 600 were built and it served with the US military as well as forces in Canada, France, Japan, Sweden, and West Germany. Key variants included the H-21A Workhorse, H-21B Workhorse, and H-21C Shawnee which were used for cargo and troop transport missions. The H-21 established itself as a versatile and dependable "workhorse" helicopter during its service life from 1948 to 1965.
