THEME
The short tale “The Enemy” by Pearl S. Buck tackles
the subject of prejudice and its damaging impact on
interpersonal relationships. The plot centres on the
connection between a Chinese doctor and an
American soldier, who are originally strangers, amid
a period of American war on Japan during the
Second World War. Despite their difference in
nationality, the Japanese has to remain loyal to his
profession and thus, saves the life of the injured
enemy soldier. However, this does not go well with
his fellow men who consider him not to be loyal
towards his country. The narrative shows us how the
Japanese doctor, Sadao balances these two duties
and emphasizes on the importance of humanity over
everything else.

INTRODUCTION
It is the time of World War. An American prisoner of
war is washed ashore in a dying state and is found
at the doorstep of a Japanese doctor. Should he
save him as a doctor or hand him over to the Army
as a patriot?

The story is set during the Second World War. A

Japanese doctor finds an American POW at his
doorstep. He is in a dilemma that being a doctor,
should he save the wounded man or being a
Japanese, should he hand over the enemy to the
army.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
About the Author

Pearl S. Buck – A Short Biography

Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892 — 1973), also

known by her Chinese name Sai Zhenzhu, was an

American writer and novelist. As the daughter of

missionaries, Buck spent most of her life before

1934 in Zhenjiang, China. She wrote about

Chinese people, their attitude and customs.

Her novel ‘The Good Earth’ won a Nobel Prize in

literature for her. Buck had a humanistic attitude

towards the problems of life.

She felt that while nations were at war,

individuals were humans and they could feel for
others. After returning to the United States in
1935, she continued writing prolifically and
became a prominent advocate of the rights of
women and minority groups.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE STOTY

Pearl S. Buck has given a suitable title to the

story. The title is quite appropriate and logical.

The wounded American prisoner of war is a

natural enemy of Dr. Sadao and his wife Hana.

They should have handed him over to the police.

But human consideration and his duty as a doctor

made Dr. Sadao to save the life of even a dying

enemy.

WHO IS THE ENEMY
Being an expert surgeon, Dr Sadao saw that the

man had a gun-wound on the right side of his

lower back. He at once packed the wound with sea

moss to stanch the fearful bleeding. Since Japan

was at war with America, the white man was an

enemy

The Enemy' gives the message that humanism

transcends all man- made prejudices and barriers.

Dr. Sadao upholds the ethics of medical

profession in treating an enemy. The story is a

great lesson of peace, love, sympathy, fellow

feeling and humanism.

UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD
Universal brotherhood is a concept to think the

whole world as our own family.

Loving everyone as ours brothers.

Sharing our emotions with everyone.

Being sympathetic and fair to everybody.

Sharing our achievements, and others sorrows

similarly.

In this story the concept of universal

brotherhood highlights that service to the

wounded is the best service to humanity. The

story underlines the message that doctors have

no nationality. They must rise above all petty

issues like Sadao did and make all possible

efforts to save human life.

11 | P a g e
UNIVERSAL APPEAL

Dr Sadao gives priority to his professional ethics

over his patriotism and uses his surgical skills to
save the life of a wounded man even though he
belonged to the enemy's camp. He rises above
narrow prejudices and realizes his duty as a
doctor.
The story highlights how a Japanese doctor saves
the life of an American prisoner of war and rises
above narrow national prejudices. He risks his
honour, career, position and life by sheltering a
war prisoner of the enemy camp and saving his
life.

MAIN MESSAGE OF THE STORY

The author advocates that the theme of racism is

reflected in the story in several ways. When

Sadao recalls how he met Hana, he remembers

that he didn’t become serious with her until he

was sure that she “had been pure in her race”

because otherwise, his father wouldn’t have

approved. Yumi refused to touch the American,

let alone wash him before the operation, and

when he left she “cleaned the guest room

thoroughly…to get the white man’s smell out of

it.” Sadao has strong feelings about white people.

He thinks that they are “repulsive” and that “it

was a relief to be openly at war with them at

last.” He also believed that Americans were full

13 | P a g e
of prejudice, and it had been bitter to live there,

knowing himself they’re superior. With the

backdrop of the Second World War, the author

highlights the horrors of war by portraying the

helpless American sailor, who was tortured.

Finally, he comes to the conclusion that the

American soldier is not his enemy just because he

belongs to another country. Thus, he rises above

his prejudices and does the right thing by helping

the American soldier escape, thus saving his life.

SUMMARY
Sadao was a Japanese surgeon. He studied in

America and returned with Hana, a Japanese girl

whom he met there, and married her in Japan and

settled down comfortably. While most of the

doctors were sent to serve the Japanese army in

the World War II, Sadao was allowed to stay

home because he was wanted by the old General

who was dying. But one night into his uneventful

life came an American Navy-man, shot, wounded

and dying. Though unwilling to help his enemy,

Sadao took the young soldier into his house and

provided him with medical aid. He was in danger

from that moment. Soon his servants left him. Dr.

Sadao saw that the soldier was getting well and

absolutely alright. Once his patient was no more

in need of him, the doctor turned out to be his

15 | P a g e
assassin, conspiring to kill him in his sleep. He

informed the General of the American and the

General promised, he would send his private men

to kill the American. Sadao awaited the

American’s death every morning but to his gloom

the man was still alive, healthier and posing

danger to him. At this point Sadao becomes the

real man in him, a true human being who realizes

the essential worth of human life and universal

brotherhood. He thinks beyond countries and

continents and races and wars. He finds no reason

to believe that the American is his enemy. Sadao

rescues the American. Thus Sadao rises above

narrow prejudices and acts in a truly humanitarian

way.
