ARCHITECTURAL TERMS

1. Transom Window – a window that separates a door or another window from the wall above
2. Polycarbonate sheets – much better than glass because they are light weight and unbreakable.
- SUN shield is the preferred brand because it is made from new raw materials and not from
recycled materials that’s why is has a long-life span of 10 years from brittleness than the
other brand. It also has protection from UV rays.
3. Horizontal materials or layout such as tiles – to make the space more spacious.
4. Pocket door – to minimize space. Or to conserve space.
5. Pivot door – hinges are mounted on the top and bottom side of the door, instead of on the side.
6. Design with dual purpose – to again minimize the spaces.
7. Perforated Steel – it is a metal that is punched by a machine to have its holes, it is usually used
as noise control as part of resonating absorption. Sound waves can pass through perforated
metal sheets without diminishing. Because of its ventilation and holes, perforated metal can be
used as a partition as well.
8. Pocket Garden – For gaining inside ventilation.
9. Recessed Stair Railing - to minimize the spaces

11. Complementary Materials – Wood, concrete, white paint, and black steel.
12. 60 – 30 – 10 Rule – 60 % is the main color/material, 30% is the secondary color/material, then
10% for the accent color. For the exterior design.

15. Tile Layout
a. Wood strip stagger tile pattern – applicable longitudinal tiles. It is offset usually just ¼ or 1/3
b. Brick Bond tile pattern – not usually used, bihira. It is offset in ½
c. Stack Bond – tiles are evenly placed.

design.
17. Caustic Reflections – was the term for the reflection of pools in the ceiling.

19. KINDS OF MOUNTED SINK
a. Undermount sink – it was placed under the kitchen top
b. Top Mount Sink – opposite the undermounted sink, which is placed above the kitchen top.
c. Flush Mount Sink – it was offset a little so that the sink in leveled on the kitchen top.
20. Capacitive Touch faucet – Is a property that allows us to use it with just tapping any parts of your
body into it.
21. Mirrors – another technique to make a room more spacious.
22. Quartz – is a synthetic stone that is used to look like granite or marble. Made from quartz
powder and risen.
23. Corten Steel – also known as weathering steel. It has a property of corrosion resistance and
above average tensile strength.
24. I – Beam – tapered flanges with a narrower flange than most wide flange beams, making it a
lighter building material. Usually used for columns and beams.
25. Wide Flange - a structural material known for its ability to withstand bending, despite heavy load
application making it ideal for constructing homes, bridges, highway ramps, and overpasses.
26. Board Formed Concrete – It is a style of putting texture into the concrete.

28. Continuous walls – it gives an illusion of bigger space.
29. Curing time of concretes are 2-4 weeks.
30. Shadow gap - a feature groove at the junction between the frame and the wall, creating a
modern and minimalistic feel.
31. Wood ceiling – a good compliment to the glass and concrete. Better if the wood is properly
treated such as applied chemicals for it to be termite resistant, fire resistant, and moisture
resistant.
32. Tongue and Groove – wood planks, easy to attach.
33. Rebated Overlap – another type of wood planks.
34. PVC corner beads – used to straighten the edges of the walls

 It is the science concerned with the measurements of humankind.
 It is crucial importance for an architect to be knowledgeable to anthropometrics as it is the basis
of designing of most structures that must be depending on the occupants.
 But in most cases average dimensions is not well fitted for the majority of users.
 Based on British sizes are given below, adjust the dimensions to fit-in to the Filipinos:
