Course Description
Functional English qualifies students in understanding the basics of English language. Students are introduced to
the varied aspects of the course which concentrates on bettering their skills and proficiencies in the language. The
program covers different aspects of communication which includes Public speaking, application in technical
fields, written communication, listening skills, polishing phonetics and grammar. Candidates are extensively
trained in articulating words, polishing their speaking skills by eliminating the influence of mother tongue,
understanding the right tone of communication and much more.

Relationship to Other Courses

All the courses of BBA program are directly linked with Functional English. The medium of instruction is English.
All the books suggested for the students are also written in English. Students have to write in English in their
examinations. So the course is likely to sharpen the students’ linguistic proficiency and thus enable them to
understand different courses more effectively.

Course Objective:

This course aims at providing the students with an opportunity to attain proficiency in all the skills of the English
language namely speaking, reading, writing and listening along with some other aspects of the language. This course
will enable the learners to use the language successfully in different real life situations. Apart from these, the course
is expected to assist the students in different ways as they pursue higher education. In fine, the course is going to be
extremely instrumental and fruitful for the learners’ academic, professional and practical life.

Learning Activities and Teaching Strategies

Lectures: Each lecture will provide an overview and mnemonics of specific topics in the textbook. Each lecture will
include the concepts and issues that are deemed important or more relevant to understand and remember business
communication.

In-Class-Participation: By interacting with students, the instructor will blend in-class-participation sessions with
regular lectures. In these sessions, the instructor will use real life examples to interact with the students to practice
more relevant issues on business communications.

Assignments, Quizzes and Tests: There will be homework and assignments. Students may discuss problems or
difficulties encountered with the fellow students or the instructor. But each student must write the assignment by
him or herself individually avoiding plagiarism. Learning and relearning will take place through quizzes and tests.

Method of Assessment

To receive a pass grade in this course, students must meet all the following criteria:

• Attain an overall mark of at least 40%.


• Attend at least 75% of all scheduled classes.
• Have to participate in the final exam.

Details of Each Assessment

Attendance, Participation and Attitude: 10% marks will be awarded for students’ attendance in the class in due
time and the students’ engagement in the class discussions.
Quiz: As per the guidelines of BUP minimum of 4 quizzes to be taken by the students given by the instructor during
the whole semester. The quiz will cover the materials up to the scheduled date.

Assignment, Term Paper and Presentation: 10% marks for assignments and case studies which will be tackled by
both groups and individuals. The case describes a scenario followed by several questions. Group must submit a
report, in which students should answer all questions given in the case.

Mid-Term and Final Exams: The mid-term and final exams will be held according to the academic calendar. Mid-
term will cover the course materials covered up to the scheduled date. Final exam will be a comprehensive exam
containing the whole course materials.

Academic Honesty

Ethics: Students are expected to abide by the University policies on academic honesty and integrity. Violations of
these policies will not be tolerated and are subject to severe sanctions up to and including expulsion from the
University.

Aesthetics: Aesthetic conduct is part of overall performance. Students have to abide by discipline and punctuality.
Ethics and aesthetics together will ensure axiological behavior of all in the University to optimize learning and
unlearning.

Late Submission Policy

The late submission of assignments carries a penalty of 10% of the maximum marks for that assignment per day of
lateness including weekends and public holidays, unless an extension of time has been granted by the instructor.
