Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

Mrs. Bishop
2021-2022
This course will focus on developing strong critical reading, thinking, and writing skills at a college level. The class will
require reading and analysis of challenging texts while completing college level written work. The end goal of the course
is to take and pass the Advanced Placement English Language Exam, which counts for Freshman level college credit.

Course Objectives:
 Read from a variety of source material from different historical periods, media and disciplines
 Identify audience, purpose, and strategies in texts, determine how and why authors make certain choices
 Write formally and informally for a variety of audiences
 Write synthesis, analytical, and argumentative essays
 Understand your own writing process and the importance of revision
 Synthesize ideas and information from various sources
 Summarize, paraphrase, and directly quote information from sources, and cite them correctly
 Use the conventions of standard written English, in accordance with each appropriate rhetorical situation

Key Concepts and Skills

 Students will peruse texts from a variety of historical periods to observe the dramatic variances in style, tone,
syntax and diction. You will be prepared for the kinds of text you may encounter on the AP Exam, in college, and in
other academic situations. Students will work with textbooks, novels, articles, web sites, art, cartoons, poetry, and
various types of informal texts.

display purpose, and achieve effect. Students will be aware of the intended audience of a text and to the context
in which the piece appears. You will observe how writers utilize various rhetorical devices and strategies to
enhance intent and clarify meaning. Students will practice the skills of rhetoric in their own writing. Practicing new
syntactical patterns, and always being conscious of audience, purpose, and persona in various texts are essential,
 Students will be required to understand documentation and citation. In class we use MLA, and you will have to
know the purpose and function of each element of citation and understand that other courses may teach different
