Problem Set 1: Normal Stresses

This document contains two problems related to normal stresses in structural materials. 1) It calculates the average normal stress in a column with given cross-sectional dimensions and an applied axial force. 2) It determines the average normal stresses at two points on a built-up shaft consisting of a pipe and solid rod, given their dimensions. The student showed their work and boxed final answers in two decimal places as instructed.

Instructions: Answers may be handwritten, digitally written, or typewritten. If handwritten, write legibly on a
clean sheet of paper/notebook. Show complete solution for full points. For intermediate answers, round off
values up to four decimal places only. Box your final answers and express them in two decimal places only.
After writing your solutions, scan or take a photo of the solution per item. Please write your name and
section on every page of your answers.

1. The column is subjected to an axial force of 8 kN, which is applied through the centroid of the cross-
sectional area. Determine the average normal stress acting at section a–a.

SOLUTION:

P = 8KN -> 800N

b = 150 mm
d = 140 mm
t = 10 mm

AREA
A = 2 (b • t) + d • t
A = 2 (150 • 10) + 140 • 10
2
A = 4400 𝑚𝑚

2. The built-up shaft consists of a pipe AB and solid rod BC. The pipe has an inner diameter of 40 mm and
outer diameter of 60 mm. The rod has a diameter of 15 mm. Determine the average normal stress at
points D and E.

SOLUTION:

4000 - FD = 0
FD = 4000 N

Π −3 2 −3 2
A= 4
((60 × 10 ) - ((40 × 10 ) )
−3 2
A = 1.57 × 10 𝑚
