HW1: Descriptive Statistics-Percentages and Central Tendency

The document summarizes a survey of 1,000 residents that examined the relationship between receiving the flu vaccine (the independent variable) and getting the flu (the dependent variable). Descriptive statistics - percentages of 9.6%, 9.0%, and 2.3% - were calculated for those who received no shots, one shot, and two shots, respectively, showing lower flu rates among those receiving more shots. The mean, median, and mode were also calculated for a sample of 30 families to describe the number of children per family.

HW1: Descriptive Statistics—Percentages and Central

Tendency
1. A vaccine to prevent the flu was provided free of charge in a small community
in a two-shot sequence over a 2-week period. Some people received both
shots, some took only the first shot, others received neither. A survey of 1,000
residents taken the following spring provided these data:

Treatment Got the Flu (# of persons) Did Not Get the Flu (# of persons)

No Vaccine 29 273

One Shot 9 91

Two Shots 14 586

Calculate descriptive statistics to describe the relationship between

“Treatment” variable and whether the individual got the flu or not. (6 pts)
29
No Vaccine : (29+273) ≈ 0.096 = 9.6%
9
One Shot : (9+91) = 0.090 = 9.0%
14
Two Shots : (14+586) ≈ 0.023 = 2.3%

Describe the relationship between Treatment and whether an individual got

the flu or not. (2 pts)

The treatment is the independent variable (IV), and whether the individual got the
flu or not is the dependent variable (DV).
From the descriptive statistics calculated above, it's apparent that getting the flu
and the treatment are not related because the ratio is not the same.

2. The following table shows the number of children in a sample of 30 randomly

selected families in Nantou.

HW1 1
Number of Children in the Family Number of Families

0 9

1 7

2 5

3 4

4 3

5 2

Calculate the mean number of children per family in this sample. (1 pt)
(0+7+10+12+12+10) 51
Mean = (9+7+5+4+3+2)  = 31  = 1.7

What is the median number of children per family? (1 pt)

(30+1)
Median Position = 2

= 15.5
→ Median = 1

What is the mode for the above distribution? (1 pt)

Mode = 0

What is the statistical unit here? (1 pt)

30 numbers of family

What is the variable here? (1 pt)

Dependent Variable
