CASE BACKGROUND
Tokyo – Yokohama earthquake of 1923 also known as the Great Kanto earthquake with
magnitude of 7.9 with its focus deep beneath Izu Oshima Island in Sagami Bay. The cause was
a rupture of part of the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting
beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the line of the Sagami Trough that hit the Tokyo - Yokohama
metropolitan area on 1 September 1923. Varied accounts indicate the duration of the
earthquake was between four and ten minutes. The death toll from the quake is estimated
at more than 140,000 people. More than half of the building and one over ten of the concrete
structures in the province collapsed. Hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed either
as a result of the quaker or scorched in the fire which occurred as a result of the earthquake.
The quake also caused a tsunami which reached a height of 39.5 (or 12 meters) at Atami in
The Kanto region is a geographical area of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. In a common
definition, the region includes the Greater Tokyo Area and encompasses seven prefectures:
Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama, Tokyo, Chiba and Kanagawa. Within its boundaries, slightly
more than 45 percent of the land area is the Kanto Plain. The rest consists of the hills and
An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. The tectonic plates are always slowly
moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge
overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel
through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel.
RECOMMENDATIONS TO PREVENT EARTHQUAKE DISASTERS
The hazard posed by manmade earthquakes can be mitigated by minimizing or in some cases
stopping the activity that is causing the earthquakes to occur. For example, earthquakes
linked to wastewater disposal in deep wells in Colorado, Ohio and Arkansas stopped occurring
after injection was halted. We cannot prevent natural earthquakes from occurring but we can
significantly mitigate their effects by identifying hazards, building safer structures, and
providing education on earthquake safety. By preparing for natural earthquakes we can also
CONCLUSION
The word is now witnessing disaster after another as a result of climate change and the effects
of global warming. This contributed to an even greater hurricene unusually heavy rain as well
development activities and unstable behavior has exacerbated the situation. Finally we all
need to prepared for natural disasters which can happen at any time.
